Nice module! You're not up to date on modular prices Nick :-) 200 quid is the cheap end. You get an ADSR, an AD, an LFO, with modulation and mixing options, and an ever so slight toe-dip into rampage/maths territory. That's what we call good value for money.
Cre8audio has been on a roll. I really appreciate the functionality, price, designs, and aesthetics. Kudos to Richard Nicols too. A lot of standard eurorack envelopes are in the $100 range and _might_ offer looping capabilities so Function Junction is pretty damn good for the price.
What Nick was probably aching to say but, diplomatically, didn't was "A bit like Maths but less than 2/3 the price". Nice one Cre8audio, it's time that monopoly was broken. Cre8audio seem to be smashing it out of the park at the mpment. The Niftycase is stupid value for money and the NiftyKeyz has come along at just the right time to fill the gap left by the KB37.
Kind of: it’s somewhat Maths-like in its combination of function generators with attenuverters and mixing, but it goes in some different directions. This has 3 function generators rather than 2, but two of them are specialised in purpose (ADSR and LFO) and there seem to be fewer options for CV control and gate outputs. Crucially, as far as I can tell there’s no slew functionality, which is at the core of everything Maths does. I see this as a really useful option for people who want a more East-coast-oriented system but with more flexibility and a little touch of West-coast function generation. But it’s not a direct replacement for Maths: Befaco Rampage, Random Source DUSG and others are much closer to the Maths approach.
I'd say Maths has a bit more "under the hood" functionality and interface, which is a bit less predictable, but will get you to more experimental areas more quickly.
It would be nice if manufacturers gave you the option of ordering each module without all the graphics and logos -- maybe even blank with some decal options you could select for labelling things.
As a beginner, and interested in making ambient/drone Berlin school type of songs, how important is the missing EOC and EOR as compared to maths? Would I miss it?
What would be really nice is if Cre8audio included a sheet in the package that just said the power cable header was keyed, instead of a diagram that shows the power socket 90 degrees offset from the way it's actually mounted on the back of the module (with *no* -12V indicator on the board!) Also, what's with the allen screws? That wrench will be MIA in a minute (smh). Cutesy pain in the neck. Why?
Very cool. Cre8 is killing it lately! Weird question: are the button values retained if you turn the power off and on? For example, if you had a looping function going and you turned off the case and came back the next day and turned it back on, would the function still be looping? Or would you have to press the loop button again?
fire your designer. The dark sv1b aesthetic is one of the sexiest in all of eurorack. Everything thats come out of pittsburgh recently has been an insult to whoever took you from the indented label tape days to the lifeform days
