In this video I explain a problem I've been having with the CR-10 (faulty heater cartridge) and how I solved it. Turns out it wasn't as big of a deal as I had thought, but new users might not realize this. I still think it's a good printer and use mine regularly. Scroll down for links to everything I mention in the video.

It's nice to see what a real customer has to deal with when buying a CR-10. You should learn to solder thought. Just buy a cheap (less than 20$) solder station on amazon and practice à bit. I learnt really fast (maybe 30 min) after seeing videos on yt and now I can repair plenty of electronic things. Definitely worth a try ;)

I bought my CR10 from Tiny Machines for this exact reason. Support. Got the printer last week, and just had this exact problem, contacted Tiny Machines this morning and a new heater cartridge was sent to me this afternoon. Great support is worth the extra upfront in my opinion.

+J. Benjimin Peters I can understand that. To me, the price difference was large enough that I was willing to take the chance. While I’m still learning when it comes to 3D printer repair, I do have enough experience under my belt that I feel like I can tackle many issues on my own. But back when I was buying my first printer I chose one that was well known for customer service for this very reason, and it did come in handy

Can't currently get anything from Gear Best shipped from a US warehouse. Was watching a deal, had three days left, fell asleep and it and every option for US shipping was removed from the site. I want one but I'm not shipping 18 days from China.

@zeoverlord
@zeoverlord 6 лет назад
had this issue a week ago (i probably had it for a while now), and i think the issue is that the cables are not attached to something solid are allowed to move when the head moves and thus weaken the connection. I solved it by zip-tieing the cable to the top of the hot end and now it works perfectly.

I did the same thing you did and order the whole hotend assembly from tiny machines but I am going to buy just the heating cartridge from Amazon and hold on to the other just in case.

Yup, these thermistors and heater cartridges on all printers are consumable items. Some last a week, others last for months. I keep a bag full of both so that I can swap them out quickly. It pays to buy them cheap from China in advance and before you need them.

While I don't have a cr-10 GET that's good information to know. I'm curious how much filament you used to print the big storyteller head?
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 лет назад
I assume you mean "stormtrooper." :) I used too much infill on the front half, so it ended up being about 1.5kg all together -- it's kind of a beast! I think I could probably get that down to more like 1kg now that I know a bit more what I'm doing.
@MrHoogoos
@MrHoogoos 5 лет назад
If this is a possible recurring problem with the Cr-10, I would not go for the solder, I would just install a cheap connector so not to possibly damage the core machine parts and you would only have to transfer the connector of the heater cartridge to the new one.
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 5 лет назад
I haven't had this issue again, but it's actually not hard or expensive to simply replace the entire hotend assembly if something does go wrong.

Hello, I have A Creaity CR-10 with Dual Z Axis motors. The z axis goes up and down when homing but will not go up when printing. Is this a problem with my machine or am i doing something wrong in Cura ?

Very nice videos. Especially for people like me that have not made the plunge into 3D printing yet. Could you please make an effort to estimate each printed piece’s cost of materials. That would greatly help people like myself be able to determine if its a hobby we can afford. Thanks
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 лет назад
Good filament is not very expensive nowadays -- you can get good PLA for $10-15 a kilogram -- so I think 3D printing is actually a pretty affordable hobby as long as you don't try something crazy like printing a life-size Jabba the Hutt.

I am seriously considering a CR-10, do you have how you do things in any kind of expos'e video? What programs, settings, tweaks or fixes (this one is a good one to know, your heat element issue) have you had to do? The CR-10 just seems like you say, worth the gamble because of simply the HUGE build volume of it.
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 лет назад
I haven't made a video like that, but maybe it's worth doing. The main program I use is Simplify3D instead of a free slicer, and I do think it gives better results. However, I don't know if it's worth the $150 price tag anymore, since the free options are getting better all the time. As for settings and the like, I'd recommend going to the Facebook group and just seeing what kind of questions people have
@QuantumShow2022
@QuantumShow2022 6 лет назад
I've had terrible luck in the Facebook groups, not the CR-10 group specifically, but others, the trolls are nerve wracking. Yes, I'd love to see how you do your thing in depth, and perhaps Simplify3D *is* worth the price tag. I would really like to see how you handle the different support features. I want to learn, because the software isn't expensive for me, it's the actual machine. Thanks for the ultra fast reply!
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 лет назад
The CR-10 group is moderated so it's not too bad. Just lurking for a while can give you an idea. The other option is looking at some of the more 3D-printing-centric RU-vid channels. But I may consider some sort of intro video if I can find the time. Thanks.

I purchased a cr 10 mini. Great machine while it worked. Lasted about 3 weeks and one day in the middle of a 8 hour print the control box went blank and was DEAD. Sent it back to Amazon and ordered a Tevo Tornado. Hope this helps you.

I purchased my CR-10 from Gearbest as well. And they told me they wanted a video. So I told them I'm waiting for my camera I bought from Amazon. I don't care what product you buy, it should do the jog it was intended to do, for the duration of it's warranty, no matter how much you paid for it. If you didn't add mods and things to it there shouldn't be a problem. I will never buy from gearbest. I'm a consumer as you are. Oh and if a product fails you shouldn't have to pay for return shipping. It's there problem. I found today it's good to have a credit card for purchases today be cause if you have a problem sometimes credit card companies can add leverage. Just some of my thoughts.

I had the same issue with my Anet A8 heater cartridge. I bought a 10 pack on amazon for like $9... A kit printer is going to be a lot easier to do your own repairs/upgrades on then a fully assembled printer, as most of them would void the warranty if you even attempted to cut a wire yourself... I'd much rather order a part on amazon with 2 day shipping and fix it my self then wait 4 months to ship my printer back to china and wait for them to fix it and ship it back to me. Buying a kit printer, you should know the cheap price means you don't get any customer support or warranty and need to learn how to diagnose (aka google search for the most part) and repair it yourself. If you want someone to call and have them take care of it, you'd need to buy something like an Ultimaker for a whole lot more money.

Kent Campbell Yeah, it worked out okay for me. Actually I was just expecting them to send me a new heater cartridge. But I thought I should make this video to make people aware that they might have to make some repairs like this.

Easy solution: buy clamp down plugs. Easiest thing to do just strip em and clamp em. then to change it in the future it’s just plug and print

If I recall, I was referring to purchasing from China as being a bit of a gamble because there's a chance you may get a printer with a problem of some kind right off the bat. and since getting service is more or less impossible, you have to be prepared to handle it yourself. Admittedly, these are skills you're going to have to learn sooner or later if you want to use a 3D printer, but not everybody is completely aware of this.

@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 лет назад
4FunRC Just so we’re clear, I still think the CR-10 is a very good printer (especially for the price). It also isn’t a bad choice for a first printer as long as you are prepared for the possibility that some things might go wrong. Of course that can happen with most any printer

hehe Ya I was very surprised as he's a maker and all ... I get the feeling he does JUST enough and not anymore... Regular Joe kind of guy however if I buy a new printer, which I will, I will most likely buy from one of his link's to support him... I like his relaxed voice, and NO face in the shot... I don't need to see peoples faces on youtube... So Thanks Mighty Jabba

@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 лет назад
Well, I don't know. Amazon is great if you have a problem in the first 30 days or whenever their return policy ends, but they aren't going to be performing warranty repairs on these printers, are they? Part of what I'm trying to convey in this video is that if you want to get a kit printer like the CR-10 or any of the Chinese printers, you will probably have to do some repairs sooner or later.

I find it so interesting how many people buy these printers and filament ,spending hundreds just to print out silly useless toys and fantasy figurines. I guess its better than blowing half your life playing Warcraft or Final Fantasy...and then you die wondering what you did that mattered...sad...???
@MightyJabbasCollection
@MightyJabbasCollection 6 лет назад
Wow, judgmental much? What does it matter if someone wants to print out trinkets? It's fun and more constructive than what a lot of people spend their money on. Admittedly, I personally prefer to print things as one step in a process that includes painting and finishing, as you might see in some of my project videos. So it's more of a creative endeavor than just printing a model and and being done with it, but in the context of a printer review you can't really go that far.
@eyamnottier3411

Not so mighty...getting involved with low cost hobby printers from the worlds total devoid of quality control copyists nation....without the capacity to deal with some simple electrical repairs....and then expecting the worlds worst online store...to even think about helping you...is bordering on being in need of some therapist sessions. On t he other hand depending on how long you had it before it failed, it’s not fit for the purpose advertised, offered for sale and sold for....and you could go through your source of payment to deal with a refund in full situation. On the other, other hand buying from GearBest is foolhardy in view of their well known record of nil customer service.
