I do think that should have been the first version to listen to. But honestly I’ve grown to really really like this RAH version. I like that it’s bouncy and slowed down.
As good as Eric is the other 2 were actually making him work hard as heck. I think that the drumer and base player were older and 2 of the best players I've seen and or heard.
This is from a reunion concert many years after they broke up. It's good, but I think a lot more mellow than their earlier version from the _Wheels of Fire_ album. I think that's probably worth checking out, even having heard this. Also, for more Cream blues, check out _Born Under a Bad Sign, Politician_ and _Sleepy Time Time._ And for something more psychedelic, _SWLABR, Tales of Brave Ulysses,_ or _We're Going Wrong._ But I think also, you should listen to their live version of _Spoonful._ It's incredible. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ym7Lsqj90c.html
This reunion tour was incredible, it was their first time playing together as a unit in 30 years, and they only did 6 shows-- three in London, and three in New York. I caught one of the nights at Madison Square Garden, and I had goosebumps all night....
When they first got together they were briefly known as "The Cream" but that didn't last long. This song is a much modified cover of a 1936 Robert Johnson delta blues song. White Room is their most popular song that you haven't commented on yet but my personal favorite is Tales Of Brave Ulysses. It has a ton of classical references and British culture.
Great band, great song. If you get a chance check out the guys performing tbis same song in 1968. I just finished watching it and your review came up.in.my feed.
Great Reaction to a wonderful Group featuring Eric, Jack, and Ginger Baker. So 9/10, my friend. One of Eric's 200 appearances at The World Famous: Royal Albert Hall in West London... Why not 10/10? lol.......You could have held on a few more seconds to see Jack and Ginger combine to re-introduce Eric so he could receive his deserved ovation but you stopped it short and you could have glanced over and seen there were a few more seconds left on the video for a reason....:)
RIP Jack and Ginger, you are missed! Jack was magical on that fretless bass! Considering it had been about 37 years since Cream had played together, and considering their ages and physical ailments, the reunion run at Royal Albert Hall was pretty damn special! As others have mentioned, you should really do the "Wheels of Fire" version of "Crossroads" and compare the two. It's a damn shame these guys just could not seem to get along. No telling what kind of great stuff they could have produced in addition to what they did!
This song was written by Eric Clapton's Blues hero, Robert Johnson, way back in the 1920's. Johnson influenced him and Led Zeppelin and ZZ Top and SRV and Aerosmith and many other groups. Robert Johnson is an acquired taste, what with it just being him and his guitar on every song, but the incredible guitar playing sometimes sounds like it's two people playing instead of one. According to legend, he met the devil at the crossroads and sold his sold to become the greatest blues guitar player in the world. It doesn't sound like he's getting crazy on the guitar, due to his subtle playing style, until you focus on the guitar instead of his unique singing style and realize how great he really is.
This is a tribute to his guitar and blues muse - Robert Johnson- Mississippi blues. the god of a lot of guitar players to some. Supposedly he sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his ability that trade was set done at the "crossroads" outside outside his home town. His grave is in the middle of nowhere but is visited over 10,000 times a year by strangers
If you go to Facebook messenger I put a link for Eric Clapton playing Pretending from one of his solo records. These concerts were played as a reunion 37 years after they broke up.
Chod, so glad you're getting into Cream 👍🏼 this was their long awaited reunion tour many years after they split up. For contrast check them out in their youth in the farewell tour also at Royal Albert Hall but in 1968. No need to react to it, just enjoy it 👍🏼
The Wheels of Fire version showcases all three musicians talents and it will change your life in a very positive way, the way it did to all of us.....amazing guitar, bass and drum playing as well as amazing singing. Check it out. You'll see what we mean.
A real test of an artist is how well they play live and Cream passes with flying colors. No fancy choreography, explosions, effects, tape loops and samples to cover for the inadequacies of the artist. Just pure MUSICIANSHIP!
Saw David Gilmour's wife and Brian May (Queen) in the audience. Wish I could buy you that drum set you want. RIP Jack Bruce (bass) and Ginger Baker (drums).
To every young listener. While I enjoy Reaction channels, like Chod and others. Some of it is hit and miss, because their still on the learning curve. No judgement, I actually admire their journey. But the seminal rock moment, and version to hear, when everyone took notice, ( a hair before Hendrix broke) was Crossroads live at the Filmore West. May 67? If memory serves. Thank God someone rolled tape that night, on this, “one off” masterpiece. This and Mountain’s, “ Mississippi Queen” remain my favorite 3 minute blasts in R&R. Regards to all.
Jack Bruce on the fretless bass has influenced so many bass players as he was the 1st to show what you could do with it. Fantastic song writer also. As I am Scottish just like he was maybe I am biased but I love his singing voice also. Great review
Thanks again for the reaction, Chod! I get so much enjoyment out of spending time on your channel, that I really have to give you props! You have to be one of the best musical video reactors out there! A few songs by "The" Cream I would recommend to you are "White Room", "I'm So Glad". "Strange Brew" and "Badge". Enjoy the trip!!!
The guitarist, Eric Clapton, one of the greatest ever! You won't run out of great songs from him. The album Derek and the Dominos, where he teamed with the great Duane Allman is probably one of the best albums of all time, of course next to the Allman Brothers Live At The Fillmore East
Lynyrd Skynyrd did a cover of this on their ONE MORE FROM THE ROAD, album, that was recorded live at The Fox Theater. It was a concert to save Atlanta’s Fox Theatre. You’d love that version, I’m willing to bet. You’ll love Artimus Pyle’s use of the double bass drum. It’s phenomenal.
Hi Chod, as a fellow drummer, enjoy your reactions...if you want to see Eric go nuts, watch "Old Love", "Five Long Years", & "Voodoo Chile", all live, of course...keep it up, good man...
You should get yourself a copy of the complete works of Robert Johnson. Then listen to Cream, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones. You'll hear a lot of sampling going on.
If it hasn’t been suggested yet--take a listen to ‘Spoonful’. As a drummer you’ll truly appreciate it. Late 60s early 70s and Ginger Baker going to town on the skins.
Albert Hall Cream Reunion tour; 2011 the Ginger Baker drum solo on ""Toad"; would love to hear your reaction to it. Mr. Baker is one of the best drummers of all time.
Anytime solo/ cream/ Derick and the dominos/ anywhere the Eric Clapton is on stage is going to be a awesome thing If you want to see his other side the absolute is MTV unplugged Layla or Tears from heaven
JACK BRUCE ON BASS , GINGER BAKER, ON DRUMS AND ERIC (SLOW HAND) CLAPTON, ON VOCALS AND LEAD GUITAR. AMAZING PERFORMANCE. LOVE THE SHAMELESS PLUG FOR THE BIRTHDAY WISHES! !! HOPE YOU GET THEM , I WISH I DIDN'T HAVE SO MANY MEDICAL BILLS, I GET YOU THAT SET. PEACE CHOD, HIPPIE JOE
