One of the biggest lessons we had about a product we developed was also to make sure the stakeholders are willing to pay. We were targeting big 4 consulting firms for our product. People on the ground were excited about it, but people who made decisions around paying for tech were sometimes still faxing edits to powerpoints for associates to update. Since they were removed from the on the ground work, they were generally pretty stuck in doing everything in the way they were used too. That was probably 1-2milion in R&D, but I feel like a big failure is the story in a lot of successful businesses, including us.

You sound just like me. I started three businesses in total. The first two were entirely dependent on me. I was the business. When I sold the second one it was worth half of what I expected because there was no on going business. There was no goodwill to figure in. So basically I sold used equipment. Always build your business totally separate from yourself. If you die tomorrow your business should continue on, not shut down. My business now could be turned over to a management company and continue on in a trust for the benefit of my heirs. Another good one Erin. But don’t burn yourself out with a business. Hire good people you can manage from a 30 thousand foot view.

I've started 5 businesses the first 2 not very successful, the last three reasonably successful. Learned a lot, one important lesson people will try to take what you have so expect grief with the joy and excitement.

It was good to see Jameson again. The video gives me a lot to think about, but I'm already retired. Do I want to take the chance to jeperdise my retirement for that. I know in the past I have at least 3 ideas that I should have worked on but didn't know what to do. Good luck with all you do, and make sure Jameson gets his fair share in his ROTH account.

It's funny, after running my company for 40-plus years in retirement I see and think up all these different ideas for business. But my wife just says Phil enough were retired.....I know she is right so I hope someone starts a business that only installs toilets, no need to be a plumber even I can do it but if there was a company that you could just get on their schedule and they come in install, and leave I bet you could do 3 to 6 of these a day and make bank!!! Okay, I have 50 more of those ideas but I need to go clean my gutters now. Happy belated Easter to everyone!

It sounds like this book is a lot like Millionaire Fastlane by MJ Demarco. He also had a RU-vid channel and a website / forum for entrepreneur types.

Its interesting you bring up the "action" step first. The most common trait of successful millionaires: they do SOMETHING/take action. Not necessarily have some genius idea.

I have seen plenty of articles that say don't tell people your plans.

Excellent advice!! :-). Started a business after retirement, which lasted about 5 years before I said to myself, you are retired, it should be my time now, plus I did not need the money, time to live to life!!

So I thought of putting a picture of my grandkids (6 and 4) on my business card and paying them a modeling fee for the maximum Roth contribution. Will that actually fly with the IRS, or was it a tongue in check comment about Jamison’s Roth? I already have an UTMA account for them that I contribute to, but it is after tax money that they will be taxed on as well.
