Create Custom Buttons in Canvas Power Apps with Components

In this video we create custom buttons using Components. These buttons are customizedable from the component properties. You can choose the icon or the colors from the properties of the button.
One great thing about using components is it is recommended to not have more than 500 controls per screen in a Canvas Power App. With Components you can combine many controls and turn it into 1 control, so you don't hit those performance issues.
The formulas will be in the comments. RU-vid will not allow me to type HTML in the description of the video.

Hi, Andrew. Thank you for this step-by-step guide. I have been meaning to tackle this component concept for a while, but some youtube tutorials looked a bit daunting to digest. This is the perfect size for me to understand the concept of component. Awesome work!

@@andrewhess123 Sorry if my question is crazy, I was just building a button using components, and was wondering how to set a variable or action by selecting the button, as there is no "onselect" property?

Andrew, this is greatl. Helps a lot. Is it possible then to define the onselect property of the button?

Hi Carlos, Matt Devaney is really awesome and has a tutorial here in his blog: www.matthewdevaney.com/power-apps-component-with-an-onselect-property/ I don't think I have any videos about it yet 😀 Thanks for watching!

Hello, thank you for this video. May I know if I can set the OnSelect property?

A lot of times I overlay a invisible button over my component, there are ways to get the OnSelect property working correctly, but sometimes not

Very nice, thank you for sharing. I have a question, how do you insert a link to the button? I want to do something similar to text but there is no option for OnSelect. I want to navigate to another screen on press.

Hi molla, many times if I have a custom button I do my component then I overlay an invisible button over top of it outside the component to give it that extra functionality I want. For the invisible button I give it the same X and Y as the component. For component buttons I think you can have it change screens but not all the functionality of the OnSelect.

How do you add functionality to the button though? I can't seem to create a custom property that will accept formulas...
@andrewhess123

Hi Yellow, there is limited functionality using components. Not all formulas will work.

Hi and thank you for this. When you say that a component count just as 1 control even if it is made of many other controls, is it a known thing ? Where can I find this info please ?
@andrewhess123
@andrewhess123 Год назад
Hi Alexandre, I guess this is something I will have to test, to prove... but in a production PowerApp I made, I did reach that 500 control limit, and it was just giving me warning signs for the control limit. Although it is not a hard limit. When I started using controls I was able to get rid of that warning sign. This site may help also: powerusers.microsoft.com/t5/Building-Power-Apps/Get-the-list-of-all-existed-controls-on-the-screen/td-p/2588 This article also suggests using component for ~400 lables on one screen. www.powerappsug.com/communities/community-home/digestviewer/viewthread?MessageKey=b967cf6f-23cf-4c7a-873e-5934bf957cb7&CommunityKey=9f5c6fd1-bb0c-4ffa-adab-06d3d72c11da&tab=digestviewer So I have not found the official documentation, and I am assuming. So will have to double check what I say is true :)

@@andrewhess123 ok thank you for the answer. I may give it a try as welle because I already seen somewhere that components where more efficients as they load once for every usage (not sure to remember properly)
@andrewhess123
@andrewhess123 Год назад
@@AlexandrePerret yeah a lot of times they have a lot less properties than the out of the box controls... so kind of makes sense
