Just a tip for those not in the position or wanting to pay for illustrator. Inkscape (open source and free of cost) now also has the option for multipage layout. The workaround is a bit different, but it is a great option.

Thanks for the video! Maybe this tip could save someone some time. Once you copy your elements you can click on your next artboard and go to edit "Paste in Place" or "Paste on All Artboards". You would only need to copy 2 of the registration marks for most of the pages. This eliminates having to align.

Thank you for the great videos! I wish I'd know about this technique years ago. Setting up the artboards was very simple but I couldn't get it to print properly until I added bleeds. My artboards are 16" x 10" (tabloid paper) but printed on the top left of the page unless I added a 1/2" bleed on all sides. I'm too embarrassed to tell you how long it took me to figure that out! I've got a background in web design, with strong programming skills, so I decided to write a script for the page numbering. It's heavily commented so it should be pretty easy to tweak for positioning and font style. Unfortunately, RU-vid doesn't seem to allow links in the comment field so I can share it.

best video on this subject. watched tons of videos but no one covered this detailed like you did! edit- how are you gonna make this template if we are going to print in multiple printers?
@PatternLabLondon
@PatternLabLondon 2 года назад
Thank you for your lovely comment! Great question. We've already created a downloadable print template pack that has been tested on a variety of printers. You can download it here: patternlab.london/home/wp-content/uploads/2021/10/PDF-PRINT-TEMPLATE-PACK.zip. Otherwise, find your printer's printable area and reduce it by around 1- 1.5cm on both width and height. Then create your PDF templates using this print area. You could reduce it even further to absolutely ensure it fits most printers, however, you will produce patterns that require more pages to print the same pattern.

Thanks for this video. I have a pdf pattern that someone on Fiverr made me but she made it the wrong size so I tried to use this technique to fix it. Tip for anyone who has Photoshop, not Illustrator; the two are not interchangeable. After setting up artboards in PSD I found it won't let me paste a pattern on a layer above them; it forces the pattern into a single artboard. I think it's because the artboards aren't a normal layer in PSD; they're some kind of an artboard entity with different rules. So I guess I'll download a 30 day trial of IL to get my pdf. Thank you for this video, though, it was very helpful.

Thank you, great tutorial! I have one question though. How do I get a line where the pages will be cut (or I guess a line around each page) that will work as a guide to help cut the pages straight before glueing them together?
@PatternLabLondon
@PatternLabLondon 2 года назад
You could draw a rectangle (using the "rectangle tool" - keyboard shortcut = M) around each page and then give it a line width (no fill) of 1pt. Do this for each page and when printed you would see a bounding box that displays where to cut the page. Be aware your pattern will have a line over each A4 PDF page. Maybe make the line colour a light grey and about 0.5pt to make it less prominent but still visible. I Hope that helps!?

What an awesome tutorial!! Thank you so much for putting so much time and effort into making this video! I have one question though. When I print my whole template, a couple of pages get scaled up or down by 2 or 3 millimeters and the registration marks don't match perfectly. This may be a problem with my printer, but I would like to know if this is normal and has happened to anyone else too. I kinda average the positioning out and in the end it comes out ok, but it is bugging me lol
@PatternLabLondon
@PatternLabLondon Год назад
Make sure you are printing to scale and the print templates are the correct size for your printer. Use A4 for UK printers or US letter for US printers. You can even reduce the size of your print area to ensure your pattern and the markers are within the printers print area. I hope that helps?

Hi Ralph! I wanted to ask - why did you decrease the length and width amounts on the print area measurements by 3 centimeters for the print area? If you stated it, I do apologize I missed it. Great tutorial...this series is awesome.
@PatternLabLondon
@PatternLabLondon 7 дней назад
We reduce the length and width to create an area that most printers can print. The resulting area is the print area. We've reduced it by such an amount so that it should work with all printers, regardless of their printable area. If you know your printers print area, then you can define your artboards to match, saving paper. I hope that helps.

@PatternLabLondon
@PatternLabLondon Год назад
It sounds like your template is too big for your printers print area. Follow the steps again, this time making sure you know your printer's print area. The height and width measurements. Finally create artboards that fit that area. Reducing the artboard's measurements by 1cm for width and height might help also. Good luck!

Yes, you could always place an image of your brand's logo over the top of each page. Finally, save the document and add password protection. I hope this helps!

How does this take into consideration any laser printer will not print to the edge of the paper? A4 or Letter? It seems to me that some of your pattern will get cut off.
@PatternLabLondon
@PatternLabLondon Год назад
The artboard dimensions are created to match the printer's printable area. Therefore, when the pattern pieces are added to the artboards or PDF print template, they will print within the printers printable area and not require borderless printing. It's hard to explain but the concept has been tested many times and works well. Simply create your artboards and PDF print templates using your printers printable area dimensions.
@bbrachman
@bbrachman Год назад
@@PatternLabLondon Makes perfect sense to me. The Artboards are continuous and if they are the same size as the printable area, there will be no gaps in the prints. Registration marks will line up. I have to try it. I think finding the exact size of my HP laserjet might take some trial and error.
