Welcome to "CREATE", a new series in which I document my journey creating something. It's as simple as that. Whether it be a desk, a cake, a painting, or a piece of music, I hope to step outside of my comfort zone and learn something completely new.
In this episode, we use wood, aluminum foil, and some LEDs to create a fake window in my basement apartment.

Maybe get a large led screen and put a camera outside and you can literally see "through" a virtual window at people and cars going by. That would fool your mind beyond belief. Or...a live mountain view. The future says we can have "summer" in the middle of winter.

First and most important, Jacob: Your pleasant disposition and positive attitude are a delight. Made me want to continue watching. Second, great idea and good job with execution. I have a real dark house (just the era it was built, the overhang of the roof over the entire perimeter of the house and zero ceiling-mounted lights...) and I have been googling 'imitation windows' and others to see what is out there for purchase and use, without needing to be recessed. I like your idea, along with the great suggestions of some other folks (use existing framed mirror as starting point). I have most of the heavy window coverings removed from my windows but due to proximity of neighbors, I chose to use the frosted window cling films so that I could get as much daylight without being seen dashing from washroom to bedroom in my birthday suit. Perhaps you could try the frosted cling (you roll it out and cut it to size before applying) over your current plexi surfaces?... and then you could open the blinds for more light, but achieve that diffusion you were looking for. Also, I used 1 x 3's before for a different project and found that I should have splurged for the next upgrade of wood type and depth. Last tip, I learned that using wood putty to fill gaps at the joints of the frame, then sanding to smooth out before painting provides an even more polished finished product. Best of luck in all your future projects!

Thanks for the tutorial. For less work, you could also use a large picture frame, frost the glass with film and use a light strip behind it. I have found a floor lamp with a large paper shade and daylight bulb also does a good job of simulating natural light in my semi-basement.

I'm so happy I found your channel. Although I *do* have windows, on one side of my apartment is under the balcony overhang for the apartnemts above me and so the light is limited. The worst by far is my kitchen tho as not only is light blocked from above but it also faces a brick wall a few feet away and it's where people walk past to go upstairs. Double wammy of no light and, if left with no blinds etc, no privacy. So, seeing what you did here, I'm thinking I could create similar but within my existing window recess and cover the window panes with mirrored sticky backed vinyl and attach the leds to the outer and inner framework and then add a blind to the window as normal. Hopefully that will give the space needed between the leds and the blind to look like sunlight without needing to add any perspex that's frosted etc. My window is a pretty deep recess so should be fine 🤞. Thank toy for the inspiration and how to. It was great watching and seeing what we can all do with a little hit of outside the box thinking.
