Just a tip I'll share. That bleeding that gets baked onto the low poly cap... this is due to the rays hitting the nearest surface it can find, so the hair from one side is getting baked to the other. The way around this would be to duplicate the low poly cap and combine it with the high. :)

thank you for sharing, Tim!

And just to add this well suggested point, once you've done that, assign a surface shader to the newly combined cap geo, via face selection in maya. It won't necessarily export the shader values from maya but it will give you a texture slot in marmoset where you can then black out the cap's albedo. That way, the albedo separates cleanly when baking rather than it resembling a mask of the cap geo itself.

but you cant get albedo since the head cap is on the high hair

Please tell me, will you have a tutorial about creating an ID and Root card for scalp?

Maybe I missed it but how did you get the ID and Root Gradient map? I see youre saying to bake it but in the video you input the ID/Root Map then bake but where or how did you get those maps in the first place?

Your technique about the hair cap is really cool and i liked it!. I wonder why people haven't subscribed to your channel yet. Could you please do a tutorial on how to make hair cards in Maya?.
@realtimehair

Thanks PixelBlend! I will think about the tutorial.

There are multiple workflows, I'm planning to use this as my hair cap, sculpt the shape of hair in zbrush, make the hair card in maya for zbrush as an imm curve over the sculpt and hair texture either designer or photoshop
@pixbstudios
@pixbstudios 3 года назад
@@danlee7923 Good luck man! Do you get a control of the cards in Imm brush than in Maya or max?
@danlee7923
@danlee7923 3 года назад
@@pixbstudios there's a method in Maya, also works in max, is to make a 2x2 flat plane, and duplicate a couple of times and mould a root with a 4x4 of double the size. Each plane is separate for the custom curve brush, so you can have a never ending hair card brush. If you have a hair sculpt, you can follow the hair flow of the sculpt and use them as a guide. You can use this brush as a hair cap, but imo this hair cap looks better. When your done with the card, weld them and autogroup them. There's multiple videos on this but the one I remembered was Monkey Studios I believe that's done this method.

just wondering where did you get the id and root map that you baked with in marmoset?
@diogomoniz5282

Hey Great video! Just a quick question any specific reason why u used Xgen interactive Groom editor instead of Xgen(description). Thank you
@realtimehair
@realtimehair 3 года назад
Thanks, Diogo! Actually, you can use xGen description as well and later convert convert it into the Interactive Groom for baking setup. I would use xGen description in cases when I need to create more complex hairstyles. But for the "baking setup" - making the hair face outside the mesh and converting hair into geometry with specific UV placement - this is where you'd need it to be an Interactive Groom.

Very helpful sharing, thanks! I didn't know what to miss but I don't know what ID Map to use for?
@realtimehair
@realtimehair 2 года назад
ID Map is used to create the color variation. It's been used as mask, influencing color/diffuse map and creates different shades of the separate hairs. It makes sense when your color/diffuse map is a flat color or just a color value plugged in shader
@Khaludar
@Khaludar Год назад
Great tut. My only question would be where do you put each map inside of marmoset; for example ID and root map? Thanks
@realtimehair
@realtimehair Год назад
Hi Igor, do you mean for the final render? or for baking the cap? For the final hair rendering in Marmoset, I don't think you need them. These maps are used for the Unreal Engine Hair shader. And for baking the cap - I plug them into diffuse/color, thank the idea. Hope I understood the question correctly.

I'm having trouble exporting the maps for ID and Root from Maya. How or where do you export them? I can't seem to find them anywhere in my folders after I did the 3x3
@GMartdolls
@GMartdolls Год назад
Also do you know how can I create a flow map?
@realtimehair
@realtimehair Год назад
oh, you will not be exporting them for maya - in maya you only create the geo and it's 3x3 UV maps - it is a high poly of hair, this information you will bake into character's scalp. The ID and Root map - you bake them in Marmoset from this information (this color maps 3x3 you created for high poly hair)
@realtimehair
@realtimehair Год назад
yeah, this video doesn't show you how to create the flow map. It's a bit trickier. Maybe I will later release a video abt that

Great content as usual! Is there anywhere I can find how to do the flow map for the hair cap?
@realtimehair
@realtimehair 2 года назад
Hi Lucia, yes, the Flow map (or Directional map) is a tricky one. So there are a few options: if you already have created your other hair cap textures - then I believe the best option is to draw a directional (flow) map using Substance painter. Here's a link of how to do it: substance3d.adobe.com/documentation/spdoc/flow-map-painting-143327274.html But if you will be making the hair cap maps from scratch I would suggest a few tools, which bake the directional map along with all other maps: - Hair tool for blender bartoszstyperek.gumroad.com/l/hairtool joseconseco.github.io/HairToolDocs_28/texture_baking/ - Hair TG Surface www.artstation.com/a/14483113 You can also find more info on creating hair caps on my website realtimehair.com/how-to-create-hair-caps-a-few-different-workflows/ I hope that helps!

Hello, thanks for the tutorial. What is your settings for render in Marmoset? There is a alpha problem in my settings. I tried Cuttoff, or Dither etc but I couldn't create a hair cap like you.

for Rendering in Marmoset please refer to their hair material setup, as usually I render in UnrealEngine. The final render you can see in the video are from UnrealEngine. marmoset.co/posts/how-to-create-realistic-hair-peach-fuzz-and-eyes/

what is your pipeline for placing the hair cards? Do you place them manually? I'm a blender user who got tired of the finicky hair particle system and I'm looking to learn how to create hair cards using Maya. Specifically short hairstyles and facial hair cards.
@realtimehair
@realtimehair 3 года назад
Hi Soviet Stache, in most cases I place cards manually, but it depends on the hairstyle. For a female bob style I would use the plugin or xgen splines to plcae the cards, for male short hair - usually place by hand. Please check my plog post on the techniques of hair cards placement here realtimehair.com/13-workflows-to-place-the-hair-cards-for-real-time-hair/
