why not making a mold with the basic shape of the ring? might remove a lot of work, would produce less waste, and can produce more rings with the same amount of energy used here.

This is a pretty good application example! You can imagine optimising the finishing process (tumbler, polishing station...) and make a living. Huge thanks, this is really Precious(plastic).

You guys should edit the title to reflect that this is being done with CD -CASES-, and not CDs. CDs themselves are made from polycarbonate (I believe) and have a different recycling process to their cases. (That being said, I would like to see information on how to deal with recycling CDs themselves, as I have several badly burned/broken discs that I have no use for.)

Pretty sure the same process can be done with cd's. And the reflective aluminum particles will create a great effect.

Our town waste management only offers #1 and 2 plastic recycling. Every other type goes to landfill. I am honestly trying to wrap my head around how do you make this a viable business, worth all the thousands of dollars in equipment, electric bills, renting a shop space, and hours and hours of labor, if an (at best!) $10 ring takes you over 1 hour to make. Do you habe non-profit status as an organization? Are you on a grant? How do you make it a viable business - PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ABOUT THE ACCOUNTING/BUSINESS MANAGEMENT SIDE OF THIS, not just all the fun projects. And if you already have made such video - please post to the Precious Plastic USA Facebook page, because I'm not finding it anywhere.

Look at "vapor smoothing" process. It's used on ABS 3d printed parts and should work with PS too.

What would happen if you put a piece in your drill chuck and turned it like it was in a lathe? I can imagine some lovely droplets like teardrops making great pendants or beads for a necklace.

Yes! You could use metal pipe for the mould, make a plastic cylinder, then slice it up into circles to make buttons!

Seems pretty wasteful not collecting the polystyrene dust and shavings from the sander or bench, especially if they’re gonna be melted back together later
@Kachelator

Yes, I was thinking about that too. By drilling the finger hole and cutting away with a saw a lot of material was lost. Would be nice if one could melt it to be used again.

I've been looking for an easy way to make PS(ABS HIPS) sheets and this looks like a good start... but there's still quite a bit of porosity... I'm not sure if this is good or bad... I'll have to study it a bit more.

I was wondering if you could encase other materials in the polystyrene? Similar to what is done with epoxy? For example: cloth with a colorful print sandwiched in layers of clear polystyrene or possibly small metal parts. Any thoughts on this?

Curious the oven temperature? A little too high and it burns or too low and it won't fuse. I had wondered about just pouring ground plastic into a cold mold then heating it so this was interesting to see in action. If you use a cheap press you can get most of the air bubbles out or at least reduce their size.

I would recommend making the thumbnail of this video a picture that has all the different jewelry in it instead of just the necklace. (At least show the ring since that is what's being made) This will convey the video better and I think more people will click on it. Also in the title jewelry is spelled "jewellery" instead of jewelry. A really cool video and process though. I like the idea of having different people show different things each video.

are any types of plastics mixable?
@frederickjohnh
@frederickjohnh 6 лет назад
Types of plastic no, but as you saw in the video you can mix colors of the same type. This is why recycled plastic is sorted and plastics have the type marked on them. They will not bond well together, even though if you try at first it may seem that they do, but the bond is very weak at best and will break soon. You would need some sort of mechanical connection between different types of plastic to use them together.

Surely the aim of recycling plastic is to do something good for the environment, Using a massive oven to heat a small amount of plastic, wasting a whole bucket of water to cool it, selecting a spall patch from the resultant sheet, drilling a hole in the bench, creating a whole lot of micro plastic dust, wasting several sheets of wet and dry and then using the chemical polishes all seem like an environmental nightmare to me, especially when the result is a plastic ring, what a waste.

Lots of energy (drill, grinder, electric furnace heating) spent on making something ugly, what do you call the ring. If you printed it on a 3D printer, it would be nicer, cheaper and waste much less energy.

Normally I like this channel videos but this time, destroying plenty of sandpapers, so much time, water, electric power, getting something totally useless and ugly, that no one with clear mind will wear, and the rest will loose its finger by wearing stuff polished by car wax, that is really skin friendly :D As I said at the beginning, you have nice channel with good ideas, just don't like this one.
