One of the biggest problems with creating KDP coloring books to self publish on Amazon is getting good quality images that can be used commercially and that are original. I show you how to find copyright free images online and then use a technique with the pen tool in Affinity Designer to create a colored image and black and white lined image. These are great for the covers and interiors of your coloring books. Using this technique could literally give you an unlimited supply of images that you can create yourself and create books to sell online.

This is awesome. I used to do colouring in for hours as a child. I also did painting by numbers. Never thought I could make a living out of keeping inside the lines, but I went on to work for a small animation studio, where, at peak times I would be hired by my husband to help him with the hand painting of all the little shapes, rather like this lion. And now I can use these techniques to come to the subject from a different angle. I have got so many ideas just from watching your videos, thank.

@paulmarles

Normally you'd leave the page on the reverse side blank. So, if it was 120 pages that would be 60 images. Most coloring books are less than 120 pages.

Well its a bit of a flaff using a pen tool if you are beginner using a mouse on a lots of details , however for a complete none techy way you could use old school . 1 print the picture fairly large size low quality on a piece of paper 2 get a 2b pencil gently rub pencil on its edge on the reverse of the paper so it covers the image area on the side 3 get a clean piece of paper a clip board put the clean piece under print image 4 carefully sketch around the outlines of the edges you want to transfer onto the paper using a bit of pressure with the pencil or pen 5 go over the transfered outline image with a black pen use a rubber to remove unwanted smugdes, get your outlined image scan that into your computer 6 retouch the image removing any grey bits in basic photo editor 7 put into your favourite background remover 8 oulined image good to go for colouring book 9 for colour make a copy image and use a paint editor to fill in desired colours Or print the outlined image then colour in by hand and scan the image back computer Also a bit of a flaff but more do- able for the less techy then fiddling trying to draw with mouse .

It's going to take at least an hour per image, maybe longer. I use a similar method. And unfortunately, there aren't other ways to convert photos to coloring pages. Believe me, I've searched far and wide. Graphite on Mac and iOS is the closest you can get, but it's not perfect. The least labor intensive method is to buy coloring pages from a Fiverr artist or a vector stock site. Otherwise, there aren't any programs that automate this process...yet

Hi Paul please can you tell me why you made the image bigger than the actual 8” x 11” page size at 8.625” x 11.25” Thank you
@paulmarles
@paulmarles Год назад
It would be for an 8.5 x 11" book and it would be the size of a page with bleed.

I have a lot of respect for your ability and creativity, however, I’m not that creative, nor tech savvy, and all I have is my phone and iPad. Should I be thinking of doing something besides coloring books?
@paulmarles

Theres many other types of low and medium contebt books you can do using your ipad.

Much work for something you can do with a Photoshop script in 1 second. :D

I’d love to see this photoshop script that can take a raster image like this, convert it to a vector image, simplify the shapes and retain the colors. DM me on Instagram or Twitter.

@@paulmarles Did you ever find a script to do this? Or parts of these steps

Great technique! However, I wouldn't recommend this because it's time consuming. Using a tracing tool will deliver similar results, albeit faster. Illustrator and CorelDraw tracing tools deliver fast results. I would not sit around doing this just for one coloring book of up to 30 pages. Thanks though

Thank you for this comment. Because I completely forgot about the tracing tool in Illustrator. It really is good and quite effective

The outcome is nowhere near as good as doing it this way.

I'm chronically ill and due to this often homebound and since a good few years unable to work, having to rely on government issued budget. I'd honestly DO do this the way he shows as it 1) yields way better results 2) gives me something to keep busy But to each their own!!

Image tracing tool will not give these results.This is time consuming but the most suitable technique...the pen tool

Good Day, so it is best to have blank page between each of the drawing? Will KDP-Amazon bounce it back? Plus, once you created the coloring pages and added blank pages, I notices my remainder coloring pages are automatically deleted
@paulmarles
@paulmarles Год назад
One side of the page would have the image and the other side of the page would be blank.

Some books slip through the review stage but will often be picked up later.
