Your work is stunning!! These are some of the flowers on my list of potentially fun ones to paint: flax flowers or chicory (similar in color), also bluebells, black hollyhocks (they have really pretty undertones), foxgloves, bearded iris (ruffles!), lisianthus, and pink poppies.
Dear Marianne, your videos are always extremely wholesome, peaceful, aesthetic and full of love for what you do. I deeply appreciate the time and effort that goes into making these on top of making your art. Especially since you truly strive to let orhers profit from your knowledge, your experiences and your mistakes! I love that you highlighted the little „errors“ this time. It‘s so important to show that the creative process and the playfulness are the main thing, not a picture-perfect outcome. As I create mixed-media collages in my free time, I absolutely adore the vintage look of your spread and am taking some great ideas from it, especially the shellack! Thank you for this beautiful video! Miriam from Germany
Miriam, this comment made me so happy! I love the idea of applying some of the strategies from this video into a mixed media collage piece. I hope the outcome is everything you hoped it'd be!
Vintage is the exact look I was going for, thank you so much! If you give it a shot, you're going to have SO much fun smushing ink around on the background!
Marianne, thank you for showing us how trial and error makes for beautiful results if you persevere. Makes me feel better about my own attempts and work arounds. 😊
I could dedicate an entire channel to the mistakes I make! It used to stress me out endlessly (it still stresses me out) but now that I can anticipate it, failure has become an old friend 🖤
This book is going to be focused on oil, BUT I am currently editing my peony painting course in acrylic that will also be released to RU-vid as a short timelapse in case you just wanted to watch the process! You may have already seen this too but I also have an acrylic sketchbook tutorial out, though it’s a different style. If you prefer the look of this book, you can do everything the exact same as in this tutorial, but you can skip the shellac unless you wanted to give it a whirl. Here’s the acrylic paint sketchbook link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jUO9g_OFBMw.html
Thank you for this!!! I so appreciate your honesty and bravery (“let me show you my mistakes!”), your perseverance to get it to work, and to remember - it’s a sketchbook so experiment and have fun!!
YES! We all take ourselves so seriously, it's important to use this not as THE piece but simply A piece that we can test out, play with, and grow from. Thank you so much for writing 🖤
It’s so detailed and I feel confident to THINK about trying it 😅! I’ve never wanted to give an artist my money so badly! Your sketchbooks are the ‘coffee table books’ I prefer. A book I would actually look at frequently just being absorbed in by the art! So beautiful!!!! Even your ‘mistakes’ are GORGEOUS!
Awwww thank you for this incredibly kind comment! I would LOVE to one day publish a book of these illustrations, it's definitely on my radar for down the road 🥰 this is like practice for making prints/calendars/swag that look like this. I can't help it, I'm a sucker for the antiquated!
First, let me say that seeing your transparency of making mistakes and then deciding to work out a solution publicly was VERY refreshing, especially for those of us perfectionists who have gone as far as to remove pages from sketchbooks for the silliest of errors. ...something I would later come to regret, as they often resulted in some of the best lessons learned, or even new techniques discovered that would later be used on purpose! So, kudos to you for your honesty in sharing the normalcy of all of our imperfections and not just get frustrated and 'doldrumy' about them, but rather face them, embrace them, and try to find a solution. Good on you! Second, have you thought of doing Scottish thistles? Maybe in conjunction with Scottish heather? I think the strength of the lines of the thorns against the softness of the heather would make for a beautiful pairing! Finally, I've been making acrylic "ink" by watering down my fluid paints (I have SO many and was trying to be frugal), but a bunch of my kids (who are coming for my birthday in another week) are actually getting me new art supplies... among them a set of Liquitex Transparent inks! YAY!
Thank you so much for your kind words, and I also am a recovering perfectionist! It still gets me sometimes. Scottish thistles sound SO beautiful!!! I’ll definitely look into those!!! Ooooh you’ll LOVE the inks, I promise!!!
Thank you so much, I'm glad you liked the mistakes part of it too, I think I'm going to share more oopsies! I can't wait to start the peonies either, I think that'll be this week 🥰
This is beautiful and thank you so much for sharing the whole process - mistakes and all. Now, when I try it, I'm forwarned about some things to avoid. Very beautiful lighting and photography
You are so welcome! And I'm so happy that you like how I filmed it, I'm trying to make sure that I keep studying videography so I can keep improving the viewing experience, which I think improves the learning retention. There's so much to learn but I am HERE for it!
Thank you so much for showing your unplanned mistakes. For me they will be a great help. I am about to tone the pages and feel better about doing this even if not perfect . All a learning process. Thank you so much for your inspiration yo start my own sketchbook.
Wow!!! It looks amazing, and the two layers of text, look amazing, to me, it's perfect!!! Your work is amazing, your work is so inspiring. Thank you so very much for sharing your process 🎨 Raven💕
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you like the two layers of text, it was a bit of a gamble and it *sort of* paid off, but I'll definitely be trying to rejig it a little for when I tackle the peonies next 🥰
@@MarianneVanderDussen The sketch book is a perfect place to experiment for sure, but when the 'sketch' turns out so beautiful, I think it's worth framing or at least sharing! So thank you so very much for sharing it! I am going to try creating one myself! And I am sooo looking forward to seeing the peony video! Your work is amazing!!!! Raven
This is so cool.. thank you so much for sharing! It’s super inspirational and I can’t wait to try my own!! Hope you will show more spread creation in both your acrylic and oil sketchbooks 💜
I am so happy that you liked it! Yes, I am definitely doing more sketchbook tutorials! The sketchbooks are my life now, and even though I still love painting on canvas, and will continue to post videos of canvas paintings, the sketchbooks provide infinite joy.
Great sketchbook idea! I say this as a admirer of the plant world. It looks like something I'd like to own, to make. Just like the work journal of some old research botanist. Beautiful, as usual.
That is EXACTLY what I was after, I'm so happy that it came through in the video! I'm making this because it's something I've always wanted, so why not get to work on it myself? I hope you give it a shot too!!!
@@MarianneVanderDussen Yes!! I'm still learning to paint (and I'm interested in a lot of other things I'm thinking of "mastering" in the future... who knows) and if I ever have to decide on one project closest to my heart, it's going to be a sketchbook like this. This one of yours completely won me over. As you said, it's great for practice, too. 🙂
@@Novaturient369 If I were you, I'd start now! Don't wait until you hit a certain point where you think you're "good" enough, just start! These books are so amazing for documenting growth, these botanical spreads I'm doing now are a huge improvement over my first spreads that I started in my bird book!
@@MarianneVanderDussen I know, you're right, totally. Yes, maybe I'm wrong because I'm waiting for some circumstances to be resolved, which will give me a small room just for myself where I will try to create what I want. I really feel your sincerity and desire to help. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. 🤗
@@MarianneVanderDussen it used to grow all around our farm house in Devon I am Now in Florida so of Course it will never grow here .. there is a lovely perfume that is really beautiful and non toxic you might love it … may I ask what country are you in Germany or holland My passion is flowers I am so excited to learn from you . I stopped painting for many many years .. I feel as if I have left it too late but your work has inspired me to get going again ♥️
Your work is amazing! I have always wanted to paint in a sketchbook, and after watching a few of your videos, I now know where to start! Can you use acrylic paints instead of oil over the shellac?
Great news about acrylic paint is that you don’t actually need to use shellac! That’s just a precaution for the oil since the oil will seep into the pages and turn them yellow. If you’re using acrylic on ink toned paper, you can just paint directly onto it!
Hi Marianne, wonderful painting and sketchbook spread. The video is also excellent, thanks so much for producing it. A question for you, if I may. How long do you have to leave the spread open to dry, before you can close the book without the pages sticking together?
Thanks so much, Joy! I think I left this spread open for 5 days, and I used quick dry titanium white so it was probably fine after 36 hours but I left it open and checked it multiple times before closing just to be sure 🥰 the shellac won’t stick to itself, it’s just the oil!
Great question! It depends on a number of factors, including humidity, but mine typically dries in 1-2 days, because I paint in thin layers, I use a fast dry titanium white (it's a special formula from M.Graham & Co.), and if I need it to dry even faster I use just a touch of liquin in the paint to speed it up.
