Create Windows VM in Google Cloud under 5 minutes

In this demo I will show how easy you can provision Your Windows Virtual Machine using Google Cloud Platform (GCP) - Compute Engine (GCE). In this video I'll provision the instance, show you how to set a password and establish a connection to the VM. And you can do that within couple of minutes!

To the point video. Just what I needed. Just a heads up. While setting up a payment method, use a credit card. A debit card won't work. Also if the credit card has been used for setting up another VM instance of Google, then it won't work. As one card cannot be the billing settings of multiple accounts. Also, to use the VM instance feature under the free trial, click the activate button on top left corner. 👍

I followed the same things and tried to connect with RDP using Windows 10 home edition, but I could not connect. So I did some RND on this and found the home edition not allowing to connect RDP but not sure if the issue is with the home edition or else.

Does the windows computer you're running the remote desktop connetion from have to be turned on for the VM to be able to run 24/7? Or do you just have to connect it once and once the VM is turned on you can turn off the remote desktop connected pc?

Hi Philip, you can turn on and off your VMs in the Google Cloud console, once it's turn on you can shutdown your laptop/computer and it will not affect the state of your VM. Remember when you want to disconnect from the remote desktop session, use 'logout' instead of 'shutdown' to keep the VM running :)

If you have and want to use your own licenses check out this article for more details cloud.google.com/compute/docs/instances/windows/bring-your-own-license/ When you provision the Windows VM by default you do not purchase the license, rather pay for time while your instance is running. Could you please explain the pricing method for VM? We need to pay by hours the instance is being turned on? or it only counts when the instance is performing some sort of calculation? And how much is a monthly rent? It would be nice if we have an always on Virtual Machine?

I think this method will indeed help with the data congestion especially during the open. So i heard you trade mostly 1 and 5 minute ORB, what's your average Das latency after applying this method? Do you rely on reading level 2 and the tape? because that's the biggest concern when it comes to latency.

I'm asking because underneath the selected Windows Image / Bootdisk it says "If you are using Windows and intend to run additional Microsoft software, please fill out the Lincese Verification Form". do I need to fill out this form when I just want to use a pay-as-you-go license ? @@storagefreak Hi and thanks for the reply :) Last week I talked to the support and they kind of said „Well we recommend you to fill out the form to prevent any future problems, but you are allowed to use windows VMs as long as you don‘t want to run any Microsoft Software on it without filling out the form“ The support agent had to talk to his colleagues because he wasn‘t sure either. So I saved the chat‘s transcript (just in case), and now im using Windows VMs and hope for the best :D

The credentials never work, eve after resetting the password, before RDP connections. Google cloud VM instances never accept the credentials through RDP. Just does NOT work.

Basically you can't create Remote Desktop on Google Cloud, they only allow SSH connections.

Hi Darmin, you are charged in a nutshell by every hour (if I remember correctly - every second to be precise) that the VM is powered on. Check out this article with details cloud.google.com/compute/all-pricing

I noticed that you didn't click on "Allow http & https traffic" in the section that reads Firewall. Is that because you are using a Microsoft computer already? Or is that because it's somehow unnecessary? Thanks for the video - short & sweet!

Hi Ed, you need 'allow http and/or https traffic' only if you want to have port 80(http) and/or port 443(https) opened on Google cloud firewall between your VM and 'world'. In other words if you don't plan to use your VM as a web server there is no need to do it :) Check out my other video about Google cloud firewall rules, I explain that a bit more :)

Sure you can stop them for however long you wish. Just remember: You will still be billed for storage used for the VM, and if you haven't reserved IP address, when you restart your VM there it will most likely get different IP.

Of course! You can restart it as much as you want. You can also shut it down and keep it down for weeks if you wish. And you will only be charged by storage used while the machine is not running.

Thanks man! Well, once you logoff from your VM, it will still be up-and-running :) even if you power down your home pc. But consider other options, running Windows VM 24/7 just to run some python program might be expensive. Perhaps consider using Google Cloud Functions? (cloud.google.com/functions) or Google Cloud Run? (cloud.google.com/run/)

It is impossible. The Actual PC ( VM ) very far away from you. Even you cannot connect your wifi. They'll give the machine with an Ethernet Internet.

Verify which image you've chosen. It sounds like you selected 'dc-core' type. Check out the standard one for full graphic interface windows experience

superb! My 'free trial' period is long gone, but what I suspect: as long as the account is 'upgraded' to paid/billing address account, you can still use your credit, and therefore create Windows VMs :)

you have to enable billing to have the windows available to use but you can still use your free credits. just make sure you cancel billing before your free credits run out

Hi you most likely have chosen image with *core* in the name - which has minimal graphical interface support. Try to choose an base image which is not core ;)
