Create your own Dedicated Server with Nodecraft | Don't Starve Together 

Doesn't TE require like 2-3 separate mods? Been a while since I installed it. If you're getting specific error messages you might wanna try the Klei forums. There's a channel for dedicated servers.

@@JazzysGames Thanks so much for replying! I checked on the steam page and the newest version of TE says it no longer requires the mod compliments, but from what I saw checking the mod lists for other dedicated servers, no one else I could find was running TE so maybe it's not possible. I also couldn't find a link on the Klei discussion board, but I'll keep looking. Hopefully I can figure it out, TE looks like so much fun.

Yeah it's a different program than the Notepad that comes pre-installed on your Windows machine.

I'm fairly certain you can. Just put the contents of your Cluster folder into your MyDediServer folder and generate a new cluster token for your server. To enable mods you'll need to add them to dedicated_server_mods_setup.lua like what I do at 14:40.

Hosting a dedicated server takes up a sizeable chunk of RAM and CPU processing (the latter typically being the factor that throttles your performance). Not to mention internet bandwidth; there is no practical way I could stream while maintaining a dedicated server on the same network with ten players connected. There are numerous benefits to having a hosted dedicated server aside from the system requirements which are not all that considerable.

@@JazzysGames I totally understand how this is beneficial for someone like you that streams. Was thinking about how it wouldn't be needed for me. But not everyone is a developer with a beast PC. Plus, i was thinking later, the support service is really awesome for people that get stuck and can't even begin to figure out what's wrong with the server. Hmmm... also, yeah, like you said bandwith - maybe someone has trouble with disconnections, too. I absolutely see your point of view. And this was nothing on your video, it is amazingly helpful for people that do decide they need this service. I guess i was little annoyed that it's as complicated as the regular dedicated server. My bad.

​ @Maievmau Oh for sure, there is no getting around the complexity of setting up a dedicated server. I remember the first time paying for a service and expecting the back end to have a "Configure Mods" or "Configure Worldgen" button, only to learn that I still needed to study up on all of the config files and manually edit them to get the server how I wanted. Took so many hours to figure everything out, but at the end of the day I was glad to have learned about it all. But yeah, I feel your pain.

If you rent a server then the server exists on the provider's servers, not your computer.

In my experience the stuttering typically means CPU throttling. You can look on your scoreboard to see how the Host is performing. If it's in the red then you might wanna allocate more CPU resources. There's no guarantee that this won't happen on a dedicated server but you have a much better chance at good performance when your server doesn't need to share resources with your other programs.

@@JazzysGames Thanks. The host is always 3 green bars which confuses me more. I have a Ryzen 5 1600 with RX580

Have you contacted Nodecraft? They typically respond quickly. It might be a simple fix.

Through Nodecraft? Contact tech support. The game should not be lagging that badly, especially on such an early day count. Do the other players experience this as well?

@@JazzysGames yeah, I rented through Nodecraft. I contacted tech, and they said it's because DST can be very CPU intensive. They said I should hire another bot for caves but we were lagging even when we were all on the ground. And 02 bots is a bit too much money for a 10 person host. Right now we can only play well at 6 players, sad.

Which bot are you using? That's a bummer, you should only need one bot to run both servers. Maybe that changed after 64 bit?I don't really know.

I'd contact Nodecraft tech support with that one. I've never encountered that issue.

As in, set up a dedicated server via Steam Tools? I've never actually done that and I'd much rather pay a little bit for a reliable machine and easy interface.

Nodecraft did not pay me to make this video. I am sponsored by them, meaning they provide me with a full machine for hosting a DST dedicated server which I'm able to offer to all players for free. This guide is honestly the least I can do for that kind of service. And to be clear, there is no "free way" to host a dedicated server. You are either buying equipment, leaving your computer running 24/7, and paying for all the electricity and bandwidth; or you pay $10 a month to use that equipment and bandwidth provided by a host company, all the while taking advantage of an interface that is infinitely more intuitive than Steam Tools. If you're looking for certain information not found here then you could have just as easily opened with "by the way do you know how to set this up from a personal computer?" Instead you complained that this wasn't the content that you wanted. Well I'm sorry, but it was never intended to be that kind of content. This is documentation specifically for setting up a server with Nodecraft.
