This video demonstrates how I made a conical slab mug with darts on the bottom- forming a square bottom- using an arched pattern as a guide. I am using an untextured slab- but of course, you can make with great texture too. My ceramics II students have a textured slab set project for which this technique really lends itself. Here is a view link to a document with the pattern I used. You should be able to print it out on 8.5” x 11” paper and blow it up to get whatever size you desire. drive.google.com/file/d/1bsFH...
I roll out the clay off camera. For more detailed information on slab rolling and construction, you may want to check out some of my beginning slab videos below.

I rib the clay using the mudtools ribs, (Link below in Googledoc) I use the Kemper SWB scratchwire brush and also the scoring rib for scoring the slabs and handle attachment. (Again, see my doc below for links to the tools). Using the pattern, I cut out the clay with the darts. You could, however, add darts to just an arched piece after the piece is rounded and coned. . I also show how I make handles with texture from the carrot slam method. (Learned this first from Sandi Pierantozzi… check out her gorgeous work!) After the handle and cup are both a bit stiffer, I show how I attach the handle. When everything is finished, remember SLOW DRYING is of the greatest importance for even drying. Don’t ever allow your cups with handles to dry uncovered quickly… it is the surest way to get cracking at your handles!

In this video, I am using standard 153, a nice midrange firing stoneware.
I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my RU-vid channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

Thanks for sharing. I wonder if you use slab to create very narrow opening of a vase, how would you put a coil inside to seal?

Hello! If I had a very narrow opening, I wouldn't put in a coil... would just bevel any angles coming together and slip and score really well! You can get away without doing coils for sure... just make sure all connections are really well connected and blended!

I actually didn’t glaze this yet! I keep bisque fired pieces in my room to show students. I have found if I keep finished glazed pieces around, they tend to “disappear” from my classroom. :(

The slab is 1/4 in thickness, but I rib the edge a bit thinner. The link to the pattern is at the end of the first paragraph in the video description!
