Very Nice! I will be adding some of these ponds to my yard this year. Just a warning, if you put anything in the water to kill mosquitos it will also kill tree frog tadpoles and dragonfly nymphs. If you put nothing in the water the dragonfly nymphs and tadpoles will eat all of the mosquito larvae. If you ever see a dragonfly or damselfly hovering above the water and frequently dipping its tail into the water, it is laying eggs. You definitely want the mosquitoes if you see that happen. There is nothing cooler than seeing a dragonfly nymph climb out of the water, shed final skin and become a dragonfly.

Hi Michele, I’m so happy I found your channel. I love how down to earth and practical you are. And how committed you are to using natives. After watching a series of videos recently by entomologist Doug Tallamy, I’ve come to understand just how critical natives are to the food web and ecosystem. So I’ve committed myself to growing natives on a much larger scale than I had been. To that end, I’m trying my hand at growing natives from seed-no easy feat. I have a greenhouse so that has helped, but I’m going to try your method of seeding in pots in the fall to overwinter. I live in NE Ohio, so we certainly have the long periods of cold and occasional warmups needed for stratification. I look forward to watching all of your videos, past and future, to learn more about growing natives. Your dragonfly habitat pond has inspired me to clean out and replant my small in-ground plastic pond, neglected for years, and change it into a bog for frogs, dragonflies, and, as Edward O. Wilson said, “all the little things that run the world.” ❤

Hi Janis! Oh my goodness!!! Thank you so much for your comments and stopping in here to introduce yourself! Let me know if you have any questions about growing natives, happy to help! Seriously, sowing in pots, outdoors in the fall makes things soooo easy! I think I'm gonna need to grab that quote and use it in one of my reels! FYI I am originally from Steubenville, OH. Talk soon and keep me posted!

It looks like a great idea for a project. But I am a bit confused about the order of the steps. And i do not know why you don't put the pebbles into several pond baskets and use a hose to rinse off the dust. Why not poor out that old pond water into some temporary holding container. Assemble the pond, and add the water back into the pond?

Oh I really want to add a small pond similar to one of yours to my garden soon! I get dragonflies, too, because my neighbors have a small backyard pond. Dragonflies are so fun to watch. Thanks for sharing. I like those rushes you planted. ☺

I installed my first whiskey-barrel sized pond last year. I am now inspired to add more around the yard beds and borders. I had issues with some kind of long, slimy, filmy green growth. I must need to add a plant. 3 solar bubblers!! 🤭🤭

Morning Heidi! Do you have an oxygenator plant in the pond? That will help keep it clean. If I am not mistaken the slimy stuff is algae and could be cause by too much nutrition in the water. I get it too from all the leaves that fall in (I think). ;) Joel Ashton is the EXPERT at wildlife ponds. Arghh! I meant to talk about him in my video. I'll add his link to the video description. Here is a link to his channel...www.youtube.com/@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton

Very nice barrel pond. Purely out of curiousity, do you happen to know the reason behind the controversy over people using rocks/gravel to cover the pond soil or not? 🤔
@LeesaDeAndrea

I have a small pond with a plastic liner and river pebbles in the bottom. It's about 250 gallons. Back in 2019, there was a heavy rain that caused water to overflow the pond and washed some silt & sand into the pond, maybe a 1/2 inch to an inch of silt. Is the silt & sand bad for pond? I haven't tried to remove it because I didn't think it was a problem since it seems to be mostly sand.
@ninetypercentnative
@ninetypercentnative Год назад
Morning Leesa! If it hasn't caused a problem by now, I wouldn't think so, but I am not a pond expert. The only reason I washed off my pebbles was just in case there was something on them. I was just telling Heidi, Joel Ashton is like my hero when it comes to wildlife ponds. This is a link to his channel if you are interested, www.youtube.com/@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton.

Hi Michelle, I think I watched every Joel Ashton video. On my list of projects this year. My only issues are leaves and shade. I really want a substantial size, but digging where I live is roots and rocks! Frogs are my goal and dragonflies! Another 2” of snow…ugh! Is spring ever going to get to Pennsylvania? Thanks for the video!

Hi Hayley! Thank you stopping in! No, they will not affect the dragonflies according to the research I have done. Also I have tons of dragonflies and have seen no issue.

YES! I have a lot of dragon flies. If you put little perches near the water they will rest/hunt there.

Where did you find the floating bubbling aerator (is that the search term I should use)? I'm assuming it's battery operated? I've had a balcony veg and herb patch for the past 20 years or so. We get visited by dragonflies on a regular basis and would love to set up a habitat for them. - Cathy (&, accidently, Steve), Ottawa/Bytown/Pimisi

Amazon. You can try looking up as floating solar water fountain they’re pretty cheap. More expensive ones have internal batteries that keep it working for a while after the sun sets. And even some with led lights

Good idea however some suggestions. First list all products i.e. whisky barrel etc. 2nd list order of putting items into barrel 3rd. Buying guide where to buy items for this project.

Don’t the by bits for mosquitos harm the dragon fly eggs?
@chatterbugmm
@chatterbugmm 4 месяца назад
It’s my understanding that you need the mosquito larvae as that’s what the dragonflies eat. Poisoning the mosquitoes will in turn poison the mosquito.
