Update -- I really don't paint only with natural light anymore. I think that was a bit of a "purest" or "romantic" idea. I now use a combo of natural and artificial light so I have more consistent light throughout the day.
It's funny to me that you expressed concern about your personality on the video. Before I saw your comment, I was wondering how I could comment on this very thing without sounding stalkery. Lol I thought your personality and the way you presented the information was the best part! You seemed genuine, and avoided the irritating music and over the top enthusiasm that some others use. Good information. I'd love to see more videos, maybe of how you work? Thanks!
This may be one of the best videos I've ever seen on RU-vid. Listening to you describe your art studio and everything you've built that is highly functional is a master class in design, function, lighting, color neutrality, ventilation and organization. You are inspiring to me as I'm daydreaming about building a workshop. Thank you for taking the time to film and share this.
@@cliffdariff74 in a way that's exactly what I tried to say by saying there is an emptiness. of course there are marvelous things out there in life that can fill our souls and they do it, for sure. Maybe you got confused because of the use of the word "sadly", no sadness in this regard, I used the word as an intensifier. I just tried to say that, in my mind, (I'm not an erudite) there is a kind of vacuum, existential emptiness I feel personally on life and has nothing to do with depression or anything like that, but for a strange reason (again, not from an erudite) art... Art suits perfectly and can take a life to plenitude. Of course we have to feel relatively ok about our lives in general before expecting art, or anything alike for that matter, to give us a purpose. Sorry if I can't explain further, English is not my mother tongue.
You are an inspiration, Chase. I'm going to go to bed tonight and dream of creating beautiful paintings in my own studio. I love what we saw of your work; it's wonderful and you are so organised, as well. Best wishes to you!
Laweez N stated almost my exact thoughts. I was impacted positively by your presentation in this video (and the others I watched after this one). Your words (tone, volume, inflection, and intent) are smiling, even if you are not outwardly doing so. Your kind spirit shines through as you speak! :) I get a sense that you are a very empathic person, and I wish the world were full of more people like this. Your studio is wonderful, and your art is very beautiful! The surrounding landscape must be very inspiring. I would love to see more videos - maybe on what inspires you toward a particular painting or series. Thank you! :)
Wow, those are such kind and flattering words! thank you. In May I'm doing another "artist tips" sort of video which will be the last of that sort. But following that, probably released in summer, will be a serious high production value film about my art, inspiration and much more. stay tuned and until then hugs to you.
Chase, I met an artist in Provincetown, MA who stored his paintings in a similar fashion as you, but set up in such a way that he could turn them as in pages in a book.
I also like to have a mirror hung opposite where I usually work so I can look at the artwork backwards, it really helps me notice things from a fresh perspective
Oh Chase, you did a fine job with this tour - I felt as if I was in the room with you and you were talking to me like a good friend! In a few months, after my roommate leaves, I plan to transfer my small corner art studio (currently in my bedroom) into the second master suite. I’m so excited because now I will have most everything in one bigger room with good lighting and a bathroom!
Thank you very much for this amazing video! I was in a car accident and ended up in a wheel chair for a year and now a permanent disability. I’m new to art and it has been so therapeutic so far and I hope i can help my wife support the family again through my art! Your studio and art has inspired me so much. Can you please tell me how you finish the sides of your art? Thank you again for your inspiration maybe one day I can meet you to thank you in person. Have a wonderful week.
Chase Langford thank you so much for responding! Your work is so amazing and very inspiring! Can you please give me some recommendations on where to buy great quality stretched canvases I tried to find info for Art’s Canvas but no luck with that. Thank you again for all you do to help us new artist have a wonderful day.
Thank you so much for your generous tips on studio organization! I need to reorganize my modest home studio to accommodate a series of larger work and your videos are making me excited to optimize my space. Love how creatively you modify existing materials to meet your needs. Instant sub!
I was so intent on delivering a lot of info concisely that I was too preoccupied to crack a smile..... I'm a nice fun person, really! ;-) Hope people enjoy the video....this is my best effort on this topic.
I think you have fully utilized your right brain and your left brain. Congrats! Great info. I'm just now planning a garage conversion so your ideas are helpful.
Great video, really enjoyed it. My studio is a fifth of yours I think, but I'm not complaining -- I've spent years painting from my kitchen! My biggest struggle at the moment is that I paint in a variety of media -- watercolours, acrylics, alcohol inks, acrylic inks and oils. I'd love to have a different station for each media (one day!!) but my studio is tiny. I find it gets messy and chaotic very quickly because of this problem, all the different media falling over each other. And a chaotic space leads to a chaotic mind, at least in my case. And yes, I also have an ironing board and bookshelf in my studio, as well as lots of textiles paraphernalia for when I was a creative embroidery student! Goodness, its sounding worse and worse as I type! I need an interior designer to help me out I think!
Thank you so much for this video. Don’t worry, you seem like a lovely person! Would mind doing a more in depth video telling us how you store your artworks? That would be really interesting! Thank you.
Thank you for this video! It's fantastic. My husband recently mentioned that we need to build a studio for me. So I'm greedily soaking up all this great information, watched your 30 tips video first. My studio will likely only be 10 x 12 so thank you for the put everything on casters idea. Visual noise can be a distraction so limiting content to art supplies and painting everything white may really help me as well. Thanks again.
Thank you very much, I really like the way you've organised the space. I'm starting to reorganise everything in my studio and I've found lots of good ideas. I also like putting labels on all the drawers and storage boxes, it saves a lot of time and peace of mind.
Thank you, Chase. Though I’ve been painting for years, we just moved into a house that provides a dedicated studio space. (about 500 sq feet!) Your thoughts have been really helpful. My challenge is budgeting for flat files. :)
I appreciate so much your walking through your studio speaking to the whys and what nots. I am actually at this moment organizing my studio at home which is a shared space shelf and furniture wise. I am excited to see everything on wheels as that’s what I’ve created all except my table which I now want on wheels as well. I also am storing canvases and papers in the same room which is all I can do for now finding a place for everything will be my challenge . You have given me many great ideas, so thank you!
I'm so glad the video was helpful for you Denise. When I had a small apartment I turned the little bedroom into my studio and slept where the kitchen table should have been..... it all evolves. Keep at it!
Hi Chase. Just wanted to say, you have the BEST, informational videos for artist. You provide ideas for functionality, as well as for business. Thank you!
What a wonderful studio tutorial, Chase! I'm in process of moving my wee Atelier from a 7-8' "dining nook" to the 10 × 10' end of my living room, and appreciate these helpful tips. I'm grateful to have a large easel, a gift from a friend who studied it up before passing it on, as it had a tendency to drop! (Thankfully it's been steady for me!)
Thank you for this, I really like your all-white, I'd like that too - and good light, plus I need QUIET: I live in a rented place too near centre of town with no noise (or temperature) insulation and it's exhausting hearing neighbours, road works, everyone's garden work, plumbing, cars & trucks, shouting, I live in France so men playing boules too CLACK-CLACK - sometimes until 1a.m. ... Huge admiration for the things you've made or changed and wheels = yes, so long as they don't move too easily just by nudging/using them. I love your work and it's really interesting to see your studio = thank you very much, I'm so envious of it: mine is chaos and because of my brain injury I can't organise it properly!
Hi Jenny. My gosh your place sounds challenging. Can you play some soft music to help distract from the mayhem outside? You can get wheels that have a locking mechanism to keep them fixed in place when you desire. Best wishes to you.
May I suggest ear plugs or wifi headphones...I found that I got used to the earplugs quickly. Once I'm in the zone, I don't notice them. I used to have to use the earplugs because I lived in a busy household.
@@wwcreations1 thank you for your reply. I use earplugs every night (they hurt my ears = maybe I need expensive moulded-to-my-ears ones?) but can still hear way too much: since my brain injury my hearing has become very acute. My head is super-sensitive too (and injured neck) and I think I'd have big trouble wearing headphones and would feel cut off in case there was something I needed to hear like the telephone. But I'm glad they work for you, personally I really need to live in a noise & temperature-insulated flat (the walls+ here aren't built properly and temperature varies between 6C and 33C!) and in a quiet area.
Sir, You have no idea how helpful your video has been for me, now I can "attack" my studio and rearrange everything as I am returning after 7 years of absence in painting. Thank you very much. God bless.
Very practical and informative. I am 75 and have never really ever had a studio for my art. I am currently retired and living in Estonia, converting our old barn into my studio. My wife will be retiring next year and I have to move my art out of the house in order to escape the vacuum cleaner. Your tips and comments have been a big help. I attended the San Francisco Art Institute back in 1969 after serving as an officer in the US Special Forces, From Green Beret to Hippy! then I attended the Art Students League in NYC for a while and then graduated from Monmouth University with a double BA degree in Art and Literature. The problem was, because of LSD, California Red Mountain Vin Rose, pot, and amphetamines, I remember almost nothing from all those years. I have been relearning my artwork and your nuts and bolts approach is refreshing. Thanks again
Chicago 75. College an art schools.. college deferments.. painter and ..wedding photographer... Paid the bills.. raise the family... We all did the best we could at that time
Well thought out space, especially the white easels and rolling tables. Best of all the video lead me to your paintings on your website!!! I will go back again and again. Now if I can just expand the little painting area in my bedroom. Thanks.
A handy thing to use with oil paint especially is a piece of transparent glass. you put it over a white surface so you can see a bit through the color - makes it easier especially when youre mixing a lot of similar colors, and you aren't creating much waste this way either
Mr. Langford, I just stumbled across your RU-vid video, Creating a Great Art Studio, and am thrilled! Thank you for such detailed and essential information. I'm still working at an 8-5 job (it feeds my art!) but am making plans to paint full time. I'm prepping my home studio to make this leap within one year. Your ideas have stimulated my thinking, especially for necessary , functional furniture. THANK YOU!
Thank you, Mr. Langford. I’m also a painter and graphic artist and just found myself being a great admirer of your work. There’s something about you that genuinely inspires me. Your studio carries that pure and simple vibe that I often struggled to find. Good to know you’re out there! Keep up the great work!
I'm wheel crazy.... so empowering to change the configuration of your studio at a moments notice. Glad you liked the video Beverly. I have another one on here called "Artist Tips"
Love your channel!!! You give very useful tips on studio design and artworks!! New subscriber here! I really find the fingerprint behind every artwork a nice touch! More power to you!
great space, I rather enjoyed the cleanliness and organization of it. I dont have my own space right now and I dream of making a space. seeing yours being so thought out really helps encourage me to get my own space and make it my own.
I'm working in my studio organization since june, but absolutely nothing was enough, and everything kept messy. But now I really realize how much stuff I have! I need to take some distractions NOW!
What a wonderfully informative video, thank you so much for taking the time to do this. I admire how organised you are, and how much thought has obviously gone into your set up - i imagine having everything customised so perfectly for your preferences and working style allows you to focus on painting without distraction. I love the idea of getting a book of your paintings made, it would have never occurred to me! Many thank i have subscribed to your channel. Megan
Thank you! This really helps me to figure out to figure out how create a studio within my small "Live/Work" loft apartment. Who needs a living room, anyway :)
Great tip with the cups holder! However most other tips are geared towards a large studio, my space is only 9 x 7 feet LW and 7 ft high. Oh and wheels on everything is great too, thanks 👍
Thank you! There are so many craft room ideas, but We paint, sew, draw, quilt,.... I needed ideas on the painting side of things and this really helped. We are looking for a house with a daylight basement with good light and a sink area nearby. Fingers crossed
Hi, thanks for all of the tips! When it comes to easels, since I’m currently looking for one, I wonder if you might know how much of the extra width of the canvas or panel can stick out from the sides when placed on the easel, without it losing its grip. The easel I have in mind is the Mabef M07, a medium easel, which has a canvas holder of about 60 centimeters long. I wonder if it can take canvases or panels almost twice its size in width. Thank you!
I'm a bit of a daredevil and have had 9 foot wide (274 cm) canvases on a medium size easel like the one you mentioned. But I do have a larger easel I use most of the time. Hope this helps.
Excellent suggestions, Chase! Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Luckily, my studio has a northern exposure along a HUGE slider. So, I get plenty of natural light. And, as you mentioned, that light drops off dramatically in the winter season.
Very nice ideas Chase. I like the brillant light in the studio. My last studio was similar with light on 3 sides coming into the studio for painting. I now paint in the basement, so not too inspiring. I organize all my paintings into the series they fall into and by size, so you can find them quickly. I like the idea of stamping the canvas. I have a small COA that I just glue to the back with acrylic paint once I make a sale.
I hope you have good lighting in the basement. It's really worth having an electrician install lots of fixtures. I misspoke in the video. The lumens for my lights is 1100, not 1000. Best wishes to you.
Great well thought out video, really clever functional pieces you have come up with, thank you so much for taking the time to share these ideas with us, I really appreciate it and will be incorporating as much as I can into my own space. Loved your studio!
You have a well planned and great studio for your work. I'd love to have that kind of space. Someday. LOL! Thanks for the effort in showing us around... The work you've done to get the lighting right... worked to build tables, desks and storage devices. You really planned it out and created a great place for yourself. :D
Thank you for acting naturally. Also for sharing what you learned at some pains and expense. That's very generous of you. For ventilation , I have an idea that may suit you. The fans that are in luxury RV ceilings. Please research.
