Creating a Massive Organic Pool in 4 minutes

Designed by David Pagan Butler (me), this pool has become a valuable place for wildlife as well as a luscious freshwater swimming pool. The entire pool is circulated with my Organic Pools bubble flow system and uses less then 100 Watts. It also incorporates a "self cleaning" function that periodically removes accumulated silt from the corners.
Pool length 115 feet (35m) width 55 feet (17m). Swim zone 25m by 7m. Location, Norfolk, UK.

probably a dumb question, but what do you use to stick the seams in the liner together? my family is about to expand our small fish pond (currently about 2.5x1.5meters rounded rectangle) , and it's probably going to require stitching a few pieces of liner together to fit the shape (it's going to be a sort of L shape with a rounded outer corner). Is silicone calk ok? or do I need to get something stronger?

I would imagine an organic pool to not have a pump system and to rely solely on algae filtering fish and plants to keep it clean, along with a rerouted fresh water well/ small river to flow in, accumulate and then flow out of it. I read somewhere that a few willow trees for shade also help with the algae issue, in which case you would only require a net to catch the fallen leaves at fall time. I want to build one myself next year and I already planted some trees around where the pond will go a year ago. +I will build the basin part out of concrete and the brim out of large boulders. Hope it will look as pretty as this. I want to also install a 'hill' on one of the sides with charcoal, gravel and sand filter to recirculate the water using a pump in case I messed up and it fills up with algae.
@creativecascades1328
@creativecascades1328 4 года назад
The ponds I build get very little algae and are crystal clear even in full sun. Remember trees will shed leaves into the water which can provide nutrients for algae! The secret to clean clear water is turnover of the water, biological activity and aeration.
@AndrewJames92
@AndrewJames92 4 года назад
Hi David, love your work and your floppy hat. I have one very important question! do you ever have issues with clogging over time? If your airlift pumps are pulling water down through the substrate, the geotextile and the gravel I am wondering if the geotextile clogs with fine silt eventually? What is the longest standing pool you have that is still working (unclogged)? Thanks!
@creativecascades1328
@creativecascades1328 4 года назад
If you want a low maintenance version, then an ecosystem pond with intake bay or negative edge is the way to go and where the wetland filter (planted zone) has an access vault for back washing and pumping out to clean once a year

It doesn’t matter whether you call them ponds or pools. The point is that these are controlled environments with water circulation to avoid algae and to keep the water clear. Your ponds don’t have any of that.

I fell in love with these pools. I was wondering, if it was in colder climate (Scandinavia), if there's a way to heat the water. I think the heaters need a clean water to function. would it be possible to somehow connect a filter with a heater for a natural pool? or would heating destroy the plants.

looks great as always. have you evolved the design a little from previous iterations? you mention air lift pumps to remove silt - how does that function? also there are horizontal spans of wooden beams coming out at 90 degrees periodically around the submerged wooden rectangle, and are buried under the stone fill - is this to increase stability/prevent it floating?

I am also particulary interested in the specific build of the vacuums. I do understand the principle behind the system, but where does the debris goes in this case. If it is just pumped to planted zone water area, I would think it would permanently affect the water clearity in a negative way… And can you even reach the dirt in the center part of the pond with this setup?

I’m wondering, after seeing many of these videos, why the rejuvenation area is always shallow and wide? I understand the rejuvenation area needs to be a similar capacity to the swimming area but would a deep and narrow rejuvenation area not work as well. Is it something to do with a build up of sediment or the flow of the water from the bubble pump wouldn’t work as well or something?

@creativecascades1328
@creativecascades1328 4 года назад
You can try and line with clay but it's not reliable in every location, and difficult to get right. Furthermore it almost certainly wont have clear water because nutrients will constantly get through the clay into the water thus causing algae.

Now I am a bit puzzled. The air lift pumps are on the PLANT (renegeration) side, not the SWIMMING (deep) side. This seems to be the wrong way round compared to your other model? Now I am in doubt as to whether to flow water from the swimming area to the plants, or the other way round. Or perhaps it doesn't matter?

Question - would it be possible to build the pool without liner by using something else perhaps impermeable clay like bennonite?
@zeljkobanovic4398
@zeljkobanovic4398 2 года назад
It is most definitively possible, the only problem is - clay is super rich in phosphorous and amoebas. There is no way of removing nutrients from it - or amoebas :) You will have to satisfy with less clear water and more chances of getting a sore throat after swimming. I would definitively not recommend heating the clay based pool, because that can get deadly ... There is a reason no one uses bentonite any more. You will need to be a professional :) biologist for a liner like that. If not - It would have to be really big and deep in order to compensate :) safety

How does this compare to digging a pond and compacting a layer of clay down? This looks overly complicated to me with potential for the system to fail in the future. I'd rather keep things simple or just not do them.
@zeljkobanovic4398
@zeljkobanovic4398 2 года назад
Well, I like questions like this one so I will answer this one:) The difference is in overall size. This pool is big, so the surface area of exposed clay in water - compared to volume of water is small. That means that this pool could have been done using only clay. However, if it was a smaller pool clay would have be practically impossible to biofilter :) using slow circulation. So, to be more precise, safety. In case you want to heat your pool, clay would have been a bad bad idea. You may even get a deadly amoeba.
