Hey guys for thoes asking how to connect to your network share from your phone i just dropped a video explaining that ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P8RMqoqD0GI.html hope you find it useful
Thanks, awesome video! I had to do research to get this to work. Question: what about security? Doesn't this make your system less secure? Activating samba 1.
I know this is 3 years old now, not sure if the channel is still active, but a good video and I liked the fact that you also got stuck and then solved the problem.
Thanks for not being a shill. Most tech tutorials are ads for specific brands/products. I like when it better when you guys are like "use whatever brand"
i always thought that usb on the router is just for plugging in a cooling fan lmfao been using that to cool my router and modem for decades, yes they run very hot and die fast without cooling with a fan they last wayyyy longer
You saved me. I had the same problem - the SMB feature was not turned on, but it didn't even show up since it's not available on Windows 11 by default, so I had to download and enable it with a powershell command. Anyways, all working now, thanks.
this doesnt get classifiesd as NAS, its just a hdd connected to a router and to be a bit more precise since its a home wifi router its actually a SOHO switch, and most importantly almost every modern hdd's have a built in spin down logic, and because a router cannot send the write or read messages as clear as a pc can once it gets in to the spin down logic you will have to physically unplug and plug the hdd back in.
@@TechSceneZA i get your point, but remember theres a reason why there are NAS specialised OS's. when you use a wireless router and a hdd to set up a nas, how long do you think it would take to access your personal files through a backdoor? just by using wireshark and metasploit? or even just nmap and hashcat.
@@MuhammetOrazmyradov hmm better we can create a `100Mbps NAS using Raspberry pi 4 2gb module (3000 Rs)and for wifi router buy any normal dual band(2000Rs)... so total cost below 5k only,.. why take risk
suggest any 5 single band router ( atleast 300 mbps) with USB port supporting NAS & printer server..................?????? any guess Most of the routers doesn't comes with USB ports
I want to be able to view/read videos and files from external hard drive in my ipad and Android phone. Which router can I to buy for good speed? Videos should play smoothly at 2x. Any hard drive and own drive can work with the router I believe.
HI Alessandro , i would sincerely like to apologize for the delayed response unfortunately, Yes the drive is always spinning and reduces the live of the drive
Sadly most of the routers have very little memory/a slow processor, so you would be lucky to get max 5 MB/s speed out of it, which would not be enough to stream 4K movies for example...
@@TechSceneZA I invented a MacGyver way now they my router decided to do an update and removed the file sharing features, and there's no space on the on board storage to add them back manually. I just took an old beat up android phone, attached the external hard drive to it via otg, and made a DLNA server with Bubbleupnp. I get transfer speeds up to 60 MB/s, more than enough for 4K streaming or whatever 😂
My router does not have USB port (tp link ac750 dual band route) is there any other method to connect the hard drive? Like using any adapters, USB to RJ45 Adapter USB2.0 Female to Ethernet RJ45 Male Plug Adapter Connector
Cool video bruh. It's been awhile since you posted. I manged to get this to work but had to re-enable samba 1. Just as proof of concept. How safe is this to do? Doesn't it open you up to hackers?
The short answer is it is safe because it is on your LAN(local area network) so as long as your wireless/wifi is secure and your own network is secure then its safe, but if your wifi is open or has a simple password that can be guessed then these vulnerabilities can be accessed
Hi Jignesh I'm not sure about Apple TV, but I've tried to connect with my Hisence TV sometimes it works sometimes it does, no harm in giving it a try 😅
it should but you might need a third party file manager or a browser to be able to see and access it, your apple tv will be a client and since there is no actual server youll need some sort of configuration on your apple tv network settings
I've been searching but I haven't found people talking about accessing a NAS wirelessly for video editing. (their answer is right away "why would you do that?) The thing is right now I have a NAS directly plugged with LAN cable to my main editing computer, (I get 120 MB/s which is enough for my videos) but I would love to edit from my laptop as well without cables. I'm planning to get a Dual-Band Wi-Fi Router hoping I can configure it as a switch and also use my laptop thru WIFI to access video files/etc. But I'm not sure if the speed is enough for editing. I'll be happy with 120MB/s (gigabyte speed) over wifi. -- Modern routers offer 1300 mbps so in theory should be enough. from NAS --> LAN cable to --> Dual band Router --> then another LAN cable from router to --> main PC + (Router ---> dual-band WIFI to my laptop) would the router work as a switch? would WI-Fi give me at least 120 MB/s speeds? do I make any sense? --- Thanks a lot.
Hi Bing Bang Apologies for the delayed response, yes you make sense 1.Yes the modem will work as a switch as the 4 LAN ports on the back are a grouped and preform as a switch 2. although the modem wireless is capable of offering 1300 mbps that is on an open area with zero interference, so its depending on the layout of your home & its build material , the positioning of your router and where you're sitting in retrospect to the router, but you're most properly going to be editing on a table so if the wireless doesn't work you can run a cable for when you're editing and then put the cable away and its also not like you're moving around when editing
Don't take offense, but it's not NAS. This type of hard drive is not designed to work for even a few hours. They are for storage only, otherwise the beasts become hot and damaged. I need a disk with an adapter and tolerable cooling, and the routers can't provide much current to their USB port. With a router at most you can make an FTP server and a media server. They themselves offer this extra.
With this setup can i share video files with friends who are not connected to my wifi network? Like is there a way to send them a download link to the file like you would do with an online cloud storage?
Are you able to transfer files from one device to another using this method ? For example transfer a video I made on my phone to the USB storage then transfer - download to my computer ? TY
Good to know man thanks. I have the problem the other way. I have two Go Flex Home NAS drives that worked fine for, let say 10 or so years. Now the base has died and the company stop producing or supporting this particular item. Can I turn NAS into regular external drive so I can still access the data from them?
HI Milos Stevanovic ,i would sincerely like to apologize for the delayed response if your drives were in a raid setup they would have to be rebuilt as a raid for the data to be accessed , but if they were just individual drives then you might be able to access the data directly from the drive .... but you will also be able to relocate those drives to a new base and rebuild your NAS as is
If the HDD connected to the router at home. Can I access from my mobile using mobile internet? Else do I need to always be connected to home internet only?
i bought a 10tb seagate back up plus external hdd. is it possible to turn it into a NAS? im looking at gmaing routers specifically the asus rt ax82u. it has 512mb ram and 1.5ghz tricore processor. im wondering if that's enough to read my 10tb usb drive
Hi Oliver Javier , i would sincerely like to apologize for the delayed response you might be able to hook it up to the Router , but if the drive uses external power the routers tend not to work correctly.i will suggest buying a proper Network attached Storage solution in a case like this instead of trying to connect a drive to the router
HI Abdullah , i would sincerely like to apologize for the delayed response yes there is no protection from drive failure but it is the most simplest and cheapest way for someone to have access to a feature like this ..... we cant win at everything i guess
Hi big fan of work. I am looking for doing the same. Can you recommend any cheap router with which i can share my external hard drive. And is there any cap on these sizes. Like hiw mane TBs can i share with router settings. Thanks in advance.
@@TechSceneZA , thanks for reply. I have bought jio fiber. It says the ftp server option is disabled from router settings page, how do i set up the ftp server here, any work around???
Yeah, but how I'm connect to the storage if I'm not home? That means Nas. If I'm home I can connect the hard drive direct to the computer. There is no sense to do this if I'm home. 🤷
HI 8 m , i would sincerely like to apologize for the delayed response but check out this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P8RMqoqD0GI.html
I hope Sravan is asking about a Router without USB port. Even mine doesn't have the USB port. Am going to try with USB RJ45 to Ethernet Pin available in the market, Amazon which costs around 400/- then we can try connecting with our external storage thru that. Hope that should work.
HI Dr Adlin David , i would sincerely like to apologize for the delayed response If the portable router has a usb port ... then in theory it should work fine ... only problem i foresee is your hdd might crash if it picks up too much vibrations in that situation i suggest going with a ssd drive
HI Julio , i would sincerely like to apologize for the delayed response but check out this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-P8RMqoqD0GI.html
Hello, This is the first time that I am watching our video. The topic in this video is very rare. I have tried the same with my router but failed to do so. Would you please help me with that. Thank you!
hi i attched WD4 TB my drive external using 12 v power to the router but it was not detected by the router. It has Exfat system. Q1.Does the file format type matters for the disk to be detected? Q2. Do I need to enable any disk sharing option in the external drive?
Hi Dr Neeraj as far as we can tell this works most of the time best with the 2.5" drives ,but the file system does matter most routers requires NTFS file types
