This video demonstrates how to make a Surface Profile in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2017. Also, it demonstrates how to create a Profile View and how to create a Profile View Style and edit it. (Recorded with screencast-o-matic.com)
I was just looking for this type of video last week and today you put it out there for me. I am so thankful, it is straight to the point and detailed loved it thanks a lot.
would you be able to tell me what book you are using for these problems. I am becoming an E.I.T and am working for a civil engineering firm and would love to further improve my CAD skills
Hey Jacob! The textbook referenced for this video is Technical Drawing for Engineering Communication - 7th Edition - Goetsch, Chalk, Rickman - Delmar ISBN# 9781285173016, although it is not a Civil Drafting textbook. This is the only problem that I reference out of it and I am only using it to have a surface to start from. The textbook that I use for Civil Drafting information is Civil Drafting Technology - 8th edition - Pearson - ISBN# 9780134436043. But, it will not be useful for how to operate Civil 3D. For Civil 3D tutorials, the software has a decent set of Tutorials loaded with it. Click on the drop list arrow next to the Help icon and select Tutorials then choose the topics relevant to you. I don't have a recommendation for a Civil 3D textbook. I haven't utilized one for my classes. I have used Ascent textbooks during AutoCAD training courses over the years and they were adequate.
how do I create a surface file? I have a topo file referenced, does that in itself count as a surface file or do I need to create a surface file or some sort and add it? to create a profile, I have to have a surface so i can click "add" and from there hit next..and so on...but i dont have a surface to add.
Hey Miriam! I have to admit I have limited experience with Civil 3D, although it does sound like you need to create a surface. My experience has been limited to working with point files or importing point data. You may be able to define the surface by using a Digital Elevation Model (DEM) rather than only referencing your topo surface. I wish I could be more help.
Hey Cecelia. I wish I could help, but I rarely use feature lines or break lines, so I would not be a good resource on this topic. I did find a forum which does provide good basic information about this, so you might check it out; forums.autodesk.com/t5/autocad-civil-3d-forum/what-is-the-relationship-between-a-feature-line-breakline-and/td-p/5612003.
Thanks for the suggestion. Most of my videos are used in the classes that I teach, so I generally stick to what my students needs are. But, thanks for viewing my video.
