I'm so happy that you are showing Wood working Sketchup tutorials. I have used Illustrator for work for 40 years and it is hard for me to adjust to 3D. You are a great teacher!
Thanks, once again, for your patient instruction! I'm particularly grateful for one small detail that YOU GET RIGHT: the proper singular/plural usage of axis/axes! I find it rather irksome in would-be teachers within this 3D design realm who cannot get that distinction down correctly - so - THANK YOU!
Just what I needed! After using Sketchup for awhile, I've fallen into a groove with the exploded view and dimensions as the shortcut to getting started cutting and milling. I don't add all the joinery to the model in fairly simple simple projects. The exploded view and dimensions are enough. Thx!
thanks for the tutorial. this is very helpful to people like me who is using the basic SketchUp. I will likely use this technique to present my model house in SketchUp.
Thank you. This was helpful, but it's exactly the way I was thinking it would work. I was hoping there would be a better way. Thanks a bunch for showing us how this is done. One thing you might show is how it looks when you send it to Layout, such as best views to show in Layout so it's clear to someone else who have never seen the drawing before what is going on. That's always my challenge.
Hi, you could also do an exploded model view using dynamic components. It would take longer but would look pretty cool when you click on it and it explodes itself.
I am Extremely new to Sketchup. By watching videos I have learned how to make certain items. I am watching this one because I wanted to find out how I can explode view my projects. The question I have is the view to move things along the blue axes (Up), what buttons do I need to hold down on my computer? Or left or right? Thank you so much for posting.
Fantastic, educational video. Really puts Sketchup Exploded Views into perspective... Seriously, I do like how thorough you are with the details. It makes it so much easier when translating back to Make 2017. In addition, your enthusiasm makes an otherwise dry subject entertaining. The idea of the exploded view makes me wonder if there is a standard SketchUp / woodworking way to document components with build instructions. The cut list plugin is great for getting the shape of a board. I wonder if there is a technique / plugin for documenting processing that needs to be applied to a cut board (e.g. rabbets, dados, and grooves).
Hi Justin I’ve been playing around with sketch for a few weeks and pouring over tutorials and yours are some of the best I have found. I was hoping that you could explain the difference between a group and a component for me and also what are some instances would I use a group instead of a component?
I need to make a video specifically on this, but basically groups are for single objects, while a component is for multiple copies of the same object. You might find this video helpful - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xJdpbmUnw_Y.html - Thanks!
thanks dude. they were great tips I am about to build a workbench and I used your tips a lot during my sketchup modeling. I make sure to refer your channel in my video on youtube (coming soon) :)
Thanks for this quick tips. It would be good if you can do another tutorial but this time showing the exploded view with the furniture fittings/hardware used in its assembly. How does one normally show the hardware - is it something downloaded from 3D warehouse or do you create the hardware from scratch?
I'm thinking you could put one layer exactly on top of the second layer, do a scene for each and when you toggle between them, It will look like it is actually exploding right? It will look cool!
thanks for the video, that should be very helpful, as I am relatively new to sketchup. One question tho, there is an explode option in Sketchup (i'm using the free version, Sketchup Make) if I highlight the entire model and right click it shows up. sometimes it is grayed out and sometimes not. what is that option for? thanks
Great video! I have a couple of questions. By making the items in the exploded view unique, does that break the relationship to the original component, if I later change the size of items, say I make the cabinet deeper will that carry over to the exploded view? Second, how does having items on different layers affect creating a cut list using something like OCL?
Correct to the first question - if you make it unique, it breaks the relationship. If you follow this method, I'd recommend saving a new version of the file before doing that just in case you need to make changes. Can't speak to anything having to do with OCL as I haven't used it
I know this is an older video, just found it. I have done this type of things multiple ways. But just got to wondering... hmm.. what about dynamic component, "on-click" program parts to relocate. Make scenes at both locations.... havent tried it though yet... Yep! Answered my own dumb question... dynamic doesn't work for this. It may be a list viewed way to manually explode a part but it has to be copied but unique component from parent.
Hi Justin, great tutorial on a confusing topic in SketchUp. Could you do an in depth tutorial on using layers and scenes in SketchUp Make, especially as it pertains to showing all dimensioning parts and keeping things organized and easy to read layout to be used in the shop for actually project construction. Thank you for your expertise, it is much appreciated.
Hi Edward - I've talked about this a bit in some of my layout tutorials, but more in the context of creating architectural floor plans. Still, what I have for now might be helpful to you - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KMNmI4Taqng.html - Thanks!
I am a total novice to Sketchup, but really want to get to know how to use it however, despite having watched the initial Sketchup "fundamentals" on the website and lots of time searching the countless ours of "tutorials" on You Tube, I am yet to find anything that resembles a lesson on setting up the actual interface or, explanation of tools and extensions prior to diving straight off the deep end into building something. Do you have something hidden away that I may have missed, or point me the right direction please? Cheers! John.
Hi Justin, Can you make a similar tutorial for small residence (or if you already have, Pls send a link) showing different component like wall, windows and doors, roofing frame, roof etc. It would be highly appreciable.
Hi Justin, another great tutorial (and I am glad you fixed the mic problem and there is no more huffing :)) Is it possible to animate the explosion so that the parts all come apart as if in a real explosion then stop and the required distance so you can see all the components?
You could probably use an extension like Animator from Fredo6 to achieve something like this. I think Keyframe Animation might also have this capability. Thanks!
Sketchup does allow for animation of the scenes. You can specify the delay and duration between scenes. So I think that would allow the simulation of an explosion if both scenes are positioned at the same origin. What do you think Justin? P.S. like your stuff!
I only have the online based sketchup and a lot of the tools and options that I'm seeing in all of the sketchup tutorials I've been able to find. Maybe some videos using the cloud based sketchup??
I'd probably suggest putting them on their own layer so that you can turn them on and off. From there, just kind of a "whatever works for your workflow" type situation I think
Hi Graham - I find that the "Brightman Method" is great for creating models that work with Layout, but you might not need to get to that level of detail for a simple woodworking model. It just kind of depends on what you're trying to achieve. Thanks for watching!
it would be really cool if SU pro could do an animation of the exploded view. Basically, it pulls the object apart into the exploded view. that would be cool. Thank you for the tips on this. I have just begun learning layout
I'm new at this, and struggle with basics such as putting a dowel into a hole because I can't seem to know how to snap to center of each. Do you have a tutorial on that, or is there an easy way to do this? Thanks for your videos and help!
I'm really enjoying your videos. I'm trying to work out which program to use, sketchup, fusion360 or Blender. They're all very similar. Did you know you can change your lines from architect thick lines to thinner small lines...
@thesketchupessentials im trying to find a video on a task I’m trying to do in making shelves that are part of a dynamic component. I want to have the option of selecting the qty of shelves from an “option” I create and when done so the shelves will equally space within the cabinet. So if the cabinet has a height of 36 I can select 3 or 4 shelves and they will evenly distribute. I already have the model it’s the function I’m having difficulty writing. Any help would be great. Thx.
Another informative video Justin - Thank you! I do have a comment about using the Tape Measure Guide to indicate the component location in the model! If my understanding is correct, the Guide will be lost the next time you use the Delete Guides tool (menu/Edit/Delete Guides). I like the concept - Is there a way to create a permanent dashed-Line?
Hi Don - generally speaking, SketchUp doesn't support dashed lines outside of guides. That being said, you could use an extension like 2D tools (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q9jFZiPModc.html) to create some permanent dashed lines. Does that help?
Hi Justin! Thanks for the feedback and the suggestion - I'll check it out! I use SketchUp for woodworking projects, and RU-vid videos like yours are my source of education. Keep up the good work.
hi, could you advice, why i see the far side of my model larger than the closer sıde? how i can fix it. it is in one particular model only. i am beginner. thanks in advance.
Assuming i have drawn the ground floor plan of the build. Then later i draw the front, end and side view using the 3D modeling. Assuming i have placed another floor on top of the ground floor(1 story building). How can i go back to view the ground floor plan layout? Kind Regards
Love this tutorial. I just got the Nudge extension, and it would be handy on a project like this one. Love the use of layers. You could export an explosion animation I suppose? So, place them in the same spatial location, and as you export the scenes as an animation, SKU would blend them/animate them for you. Worth a shot. The other thought (and it's way more complex) is to make these elements into dynamic components and with some duct tape and ingenuity, program the components for a one click explode on that puppy. That's beyond my dynamic component coding for sure, but I suspect it's possible. "on click" and change your location on a given axis etc. This could be the non-destructive methodology we're looking for. Can't thank you enough for the great extension reviews--it's saved me 2 to 3 hours this week alone.
Interesting idea - probably if I was really worried about creating a non destructive version, I'd use the extension "Animator" by Fredo6 (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mk5LbqdUwIg.html ). It has the ability to create moving animations, so you could animate the movement of each individual piece. Thanks!
Absolutely. It'd be about the most straight forward, and I'd thought of it initially. I'd like to play around with that and see if it'd help my clients in visualizations. Thanks for the link.
Honestly, I haven't done a lot of furniture and woodworking rendering, so I don't have any kind of favorite presets. I do a little bit with this in this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4iwPECwhBu0.html , but I'm not sure if it will help you or not. Thanks!
1. Always have the original merged copy prepared - Be sure to make it unique if the model is a component 2. Use guides (tape measure) to point out where each part belongs 3. Divide the unexploded view into different scene
Hey, Great Video. i doubt you'll see this in time, but does anyone know that if your Entity Info Tray says No Selection, does it make a difference? Great video btw!!!
I think Cutlist (extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/cutlist) may do this - I haven't used it, but I've heard that it might do what you want - Jay Bates has a pretty good video on doing this manually here (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6q0JFoIkVJ4.html) - Hope this helped!
You can turn scene transitions off by going to "View," "Animation," then "Settings." If you uncheck the box for "Enable Scene Transitions," the transition animations will turn off. Hope this helped!
This video should explain it - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Dp3AAhrYbpw.html - Basically groups are not linked to each other, while components are - you change one copy of a component in SketchUp, every instance or copy of that component will change. Thanks!
How to "explode" mesh / object in Blender? i searched everywhere but all i get is the result of "real" explode effect, i just want to do this "SketchUp version of explode" in Blender, with or without any custom addons - scripts
I like your videos "but" : 1. Please let the mouse pointer linger over a menu item so my eye can find the pointer and I have time to read what you are going to click on. 2. Please don't use the word "object" instead of "Component" or "Group". Thank you!
