That's awesome to hear. I know when I first started with photoshop I was pretty intimidated creating my own brushes, but it really is a simple technique and very valuable to know!
What photoshop program is used to make this kind of brushes? It the program requires a subscription is there another program that will do the same thing I can just purchase without mon/yr payments?
So I was playing around with a sample layer to see if I can get the grayed out font and the only way I was able to get the "define brush preset" to be gray is when I had a layer mask added and that was active and not the main layer. I would try adding a brand new layer and doing a simple brush stroke and test to see if you can click on the define brush preset. It's possible you may have accidentally pressed a button that did something so may be worth trying from the beginning again with a new file to see if that works.
