I know my husband thinks I am crazy but just as he can watch lots of videos on tools I can watch a lot on plants 🪴. I have a few that I want to play with when we get into spring as we are in CA in the US and it is cold right now. Anyway I watch your videos when I am crocheting, doing dishes, relaxing.... and my mom is staying with me right now after her arm broke because of her cancer, I started playing her your videos and she is hooked, she stayed up til 2:30am the other day watching them and she is usually in bed @9pm. So thank you for sharing your talent/hobby/passion with all of us.

Looks like Mica pots? I thought I was the only one using them!!! I just used my first two Mica pots this year in my repotting this winter. Light weight. I made the mistake of repotting my two Dawn redwoods into pots that are a bit too large for the tree, since the roots grow so fast, I thought it would have been a good idea.. now.. I think it was a mistake... And yes, I have fallen into the trap of specialized soils... this year, I bought ALOT of substrate soils in varying granular sizes, that I tend to mix with pine bark based organic mix. I am hoping I didnt make a mistake. Seems like, I think my soil just isnt right, I repot, and loose a bunch of trees..so this year, I tried yet ANOTHER soil and am hoping for the best... Looks like, this year, is another year of mistakes....glad I found you here....

I've been able to do quite a bit of shaping to the branches of my bald Cypress without wire just by "cracking" the branches and they stay in place, easiest defoliating ever.

Dear mr. Chan there is a specialized nursery here for redwood trees. I would really like to make ons as a bonsai (and a forest of redwoods). In your experience do you get taper with this kind of tree the same as with for instance an acer?
@mikeemmons1079
@mikeemmons1079 3 года назад
I am no expert, but I have seen 3 of them growing outside and were obviously not regularly pruned. The taper on the trunks seems to... like an old time collapsible car antenna? Almost looks like bad grafting. Maybe it is our weather here? 5b
@Ben7x26
@Ben7x26 2 года назад
You get better taper in shallow pots. You have to cut the roots the go straight down to increase the growth of side roots.
@TomTomTomTom538
@TomTomTomTom538 3 года назад
I've heard of people allowing weed growth in the pots of newly collected material to stabilise the soil. What do you think of that and can you explain why it may or may not be beneficial?
@peterchan3100
@peterchan3100 3 года назад
Whether you collect or dig up from the field as we do, it is best to leave a rootball of the original soil until the tree gets properly established. If you tease all the soil out after digging it up - that could break or damage the roots. But don't let too many weeds grow as you will have a problem getting rid of them at a later date
