In this video I head out onto the streets of Soho in London, with Joshua Jackson, to talk about creating mood and mystery in your street photography. He shares his philosophy for capturing the city he lives in, including how he uses the concept of 'the curiosity gap' to mask and abstract his subjects, encouraging those who view his work to lean in and spend more time with the image to find out more. I also offer some thoughts on work ethic and defining a style for your own work.
Share this video on if you enjoyed it.

Sean, I think you highly undervalue yourself. I’ve listened to you a lot, through your videos and podcasts that you’ve been on. Your videography skill is incredible. You took this guys work, and put him into it. All of the shots that had a red hint to them really felt like he was put into his work. It showed him and how he see his world. Absolutely amazing how you did that. And my personal favourite thing is the way in which you did it so simplistically.

I really liked how you described that he isn't booking flights to big, aesthetically-pleasing cities to shoot amazing images and that he's really getting to know one city. I'm not gonna lie, my excuse of not going out to shoot is because my town is small and it becomes an eyesore since I've lived and grown up here. But this inspired me to really make the effort to see things through a new perspective, especially being in a small town. Thanks for another amazing video Sean!~

I so feel that, I've lived in the same house in the suburbs for my entire life and Atlanta is an hour away and I don't know it well and it's a rather ugly city anyway. I've been wanting to find a way to capture the area though, someway to incorporate street photography into the boring suburbs on the edge of cute and rural.

2 years in not really a reference, at least this story tells me that. Giving his work ethics and hours a day he puts in his photography, by some "normal" standards you could say that he is a street photographer for 8 years. And even better, he is consistent, which is like 16 years :) For everything you do or learn in life, when you make big breaks in between, it takes so much more time to get to a certain level. Thank you for this, and all your other videos. Very inspiring.. it's 9PM, I'm going out to shoot now.. Cheers!

Sean, I just looked at your store and I also like the A3 prints you are now offering, and it occurred to me again as I mentioned in a previous comment, that I really like your trio of images such as the Himba portraits in previous episodes and how the three portraits of the gentlemen behind accentuate the room behind you in this video. Personally, I think sets of three images of a theme make for a lovely centrepiece, and having more than one set would allow for the themes to be changed or rotated, possibly with the seasons, and might be attractive to interior decorators as well as some of your followers.

I really enjoy your images and your films. You need to come and talk to my (not photo) students about putting the time in to realise the results they desire or in some cases expect. Thank you and I’ve followed Joshua. What I enjoy about You Tube is that as a self designated landscape photographer I have learned so much about trying new things and at the moment my most praised image is a night street scene from Paris. Who knew? I certainly didn’t. Get out and take the shot.

Your videos are so lovely and full of mood - this one reminded me of WKw's In The Mood for Love. Perhaps you know the answer to this since you've been studying the history of street photography: how "fast" was the glass those guys used in the '50s and '60s? I love low light and night work, but everyone's always chasing the fastest glass and I'm wondering how much it *really* matters if you know your tools.

Sean I found this clip so impressive, I come from a Videography back ground turned Photographer the subject matter the compelling story the Colours and Lighting. Your techniques employed what gives me the how sharing and advice especially introducing your images and Joshua's in this clip. What I also loved is the back ground music to create mod. The dialogue just flows with interest. I tend to listen to each clip. It's an Art form within the video "Sounds" while blogging and reporting requires complete attention to detail. Where light colour and mod is so important for your audience this also applies to your sound in the clips. Such as Dynamic range texture interlace the visual with the sound just selecting sound tracks is another masterful learning kerb. While post production tasks up your valuable time. Look forward to your next clip... Ps arriving in London early May with a new Fujifilm system just for travel purposes, Unfortunately being inconspicuous is hard when your 6"" 4 weighing 120 kilo's and built like a Rugby player especially when photographing in Japan.
