Creating Polyrhythms in VCV Rack using the Turing Machine

The Turing Machine is a great source of randomly generated gates, and with its sequence lock function, it's also possible to create interesting polyrhythmic patterns. I start the video with a quick look at the Pulses section of the Turing Machine, and then I record a few patterns using the Gate Sequencer from Impromptu Modular, and also use the trigger outputs themselves to trigger a couple of FM Operators.

using a shift register with a quantiser is such a good idea (I've been thinking for ever, "what a shame that turing machines don't have signal inputs" - never thought of using both!

It's a whole new learning curve, all this routing abstraction. Sometimes I have to pause the video and just sit and think and recreate it a couple of times. But you are helping hugely, Omri. Thank you. P.S that shift register, S&H technique to sync with the envelopes' gates boxed my head for a while. Still does, infact.
@OmriCohen-Music
@OmriCohen-Music 3 года назад
Glad it was helpful! About the S&H, basically, it will make sure that pitch changes will happen only when the voice is playing. The S&H will let "new pitch" through only together with the same trigger the envelope is getting since it will not sample a new pitch unless it's being triggered. I hope it makes sense...

@@OmriCohen-Music thanks for the reply! It makes sense, actually. It's just learning that it's possible to split the signal that way, and considering it's other uses. Alot to think about!

I know this is a bit of an old one, but I just built this out and it sounds pretty good. Finally figuring out what the Turing machine can do. Must say it was really hard to get good patterns for the kick and hats. Thanks for this. Really wish that clock multplier was still available in the library tho, had to substitute Nysthi's.

my SLAP hitting envelope module has L and R instead of IN and OUT in the vca section. So I couldnt follow along. Is there any work around to this? Sorry this is all new to me. Great channel btw!

Hi! No worries :) And yes, Slap is now stereo but if you connect your signal to and from the L in/out, it will act the same as before. Let me know if it works for you.

Hey Omri, these tutorial videos are unbelievable - a huge service to the community and any and all interested in getting up and running with VCV Rack. I was wondering if you had any interest in considering making a video about using a MIDI controller directly in VCV Rack. Something like this, perhaps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--OnS0oVEiGw.html. Just a thought! Cheers

Hi Michael! I'm really happy you enjoy my videos and find them useful! I actually have a video about something close to using MIDI in Rack, and another about an external controller. But you're right, I should make also one about using a keyboard and playing in rack live. Thanks so much!
