Creating Realistic Rust Effects with Acrylic Paints on Diecast - Gaslands

We're back on the 1967 Pontiac Firebird 400 from Hot Wheels and this time we're creating realistic rust on the sides, trunk, hood and roof using acrylic paints. The process is very therapeutic. As you'll see, it's simple to give your model a realistic rusty look quickly with just a sponge, some paint and a good eye for detail. This is the follow up to my paint chipping video.

My goal is to return this car to a stock look and age it as if it had one owner and is now a mechanic's project car. The stock GM paint color I've chosen is Gulf Turquois. It was apparently one of the more popular colors at GM dealerships in the late 60's. The undercoating is Rustolium dark red. You can see the full build in my upcoming video. Thanks for watching!

Great eye, truly. I found liquid masking over a light rust or a mix of rust shades saves a bunch of time. I just tried the "Rust all" kit with aging solution. It's incredible but God is it a long process. The rust is thinner than the thinnest reduced candy that you cab can imagine. The reward however is amazing. It lays flat and you just keep brushing. While it's drying I use that rust with charcoal and silver and do some streaking. The rusts dry very bright. You then black wash with a sponge or brush.

What did you use to cut out parts of the metal body to make it look like some of the panels have rusted away?

I just used a cutting wheel on a Dremel tool.

I couldn't help notice you don't know what a fender is, pro-tip: it's not a bumper ;)

Why not hit the car with a lighter/matches and take some paint off for real. Let rust naturally. That’s what I might do. Have you tried that before? Thanks.
