Layale Chaker and Lisa Schlesinger’s opera Ruinous Gods explores displacement, trauma, and political danger through the two remarkably different truths of a young girl: the war-ravaged homeland she is escaping with her mother, and the whimsical, imaginative dream world to which her mind flees. Ruinous Gods has its world premiere at Spoleto Festival USA May 24, 2024.
