Well tell him thanks for all the support! I release new videos every Sunday! I'm taking a short break for the holidays to spend some extra time with the family, but weekly videos will start up again Sunday, January 10th.
Great videos! I started buying HUE´s for about two years ago and been changing most of my lights since then but never really gotten in how the HomeKit really works. This is very informative and helpful now that Im about to buy my first Aqara hub with som temperature/humidity sensors.
Awesome video i do have a question, if a light ( kitchen ) is already on in a room and you turn on a scene that turns on that same light ( kitchen ) would that conflict? Like would the light switch off then on/ just stay on?
Can you do a video for building 2023 homekit home with the best gear choices over the years.. like if you where to buy a garage door opener what would you use if you could only choose one same with other products door lock sockets curtain real light switches in door camera in door camera etc .. as there a lot of choices to many now day would just like to build the best HomeKit home 2023 thanks
My vocolinc coloflux light didn't turn off at 6a as programmed via vocolinc app. Do all these settings have to be done in apple? I wanted to also flare the porch lights from red at 50% to yellow at 70% when the camera motion sensor detects a person approach. It flares but then it won't return to 50-red.
When you have a lamp to turn on at 6pm but want to change the time to 7pm, can. you edit the time or do you have to delete the 6pm automation and make a new one foir 7pm?
I know this is an old video, but hopefully you still see comments. I have Mysa thermostats in this new house I bought. There’s one for every room. They are HomeKit compatible and I think I understand how to set a scene, but is there a way to group some of them together in a scene and change the temperature based on zones? It’s one thing to set a fixed scene to “turn on to 70 degrees” but how do I globally turn them all down to whatever new temperature that I want?
Very cool thanks. We use the iPad as the home hub, which works well, but it seems that the iPad needs to be plugged in, on and awake at all times in order to work for remote control. This means that the screen is on all the time too, which seems like a waste of power and may potentially reduce battery life. Do you know of a solution where the iPad can be on in the background but the screen can be turned off? We have an iPad pro 11" latest model. Thanks for any help you can give us on this issue.
That's a good question. I've heard the same thing from someone else using an iPad as a HomeKit hub. Personally, I don't have much experience with that because I've always used an Apple TV or HomePod as my hub. The only thing I can think of is trying to find a kiosk type app that dims the screen some when not in use, assuming it is mounted on the wall or something like that. Otherwise, I'd probably just lower the brightness as much as possible. Don't think you can run the iPad with the screen off completely.
No, unfortunately there is no easy way to do this at the moment. The only way I've found to do this is to use an automation server with pushcuts. It is certainly not an ideal solution, but the only way I've found possible. Video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CW-39Ec8Qzk.html
I have a movie time scene. when I enable it and watch a movie it's fine, but after the movie I would like to tap that scene again and it go back to the previous state. Is that possible? Am I missing something?
Well homekit doesn't really remember or save the previous state of the devices in that way. Your best option is probably to set a second scene that you can easily tap when the movie is over to set all you lights back the way you like.
Chris4ord Not sure. But you can add HomeKit scenes and accessories to your control center. Something else you could do if you really want HomeKit scenes in the widget area on your iOS device: set up a shortcut using the shortcuts app that simply turns on or off a HomeKit scene. You can then add shortcuts to your widgets. There also may be 3rd party HomeKit controller apps that have widgets built in, but I’m not sure.
Are you able to use the “convert to shortcut” option and then run a shortcut based on a motion sensor? Trying to have the light shut off when occupancy stops detecting occupancy but only if a specific light is off.
Dave Wehr that should work. You can also use the Eve app (free) or the Home+ app (paid) to creat a conditional automation. Should be pretty easy that way too.
please, i just got the philips bridge and smart lights and im trying out the automations. Does the “when i arrive..’ automation work without the sensor to automatically turn on the lights or do i need a sensor for that? i dont know if this question makes sense😬
Arinze Gerald sure that makes sense. To answer, no you don’t need any sensors to accomplish that. HomeKit will use your phone’s location to determine when you arrive/leave to turn on your lights.
Shane Whatley thanks! But what if I want the light to come on when anyone that’s not just me comes to my house like my brother or something and I don’t want to invite them to the home app
Arinze Gerald they have to be a part of your HomeKit home in order to do that. Otherwise you’ll need something else to trigger the lights such as sensors, switches, etc.
Hi Shane, great video for helping jumping into Homekit. I have a question and hopefully you can help me to deal with eat. Here is the context : I have Philips Hue bulbs that serve me as chandeliers. I turn them ON & OFF using traditional non-smart buttons on my walls. And I want them to have default brightness set to 70%. In the Hue app / Parameters / Lightning Behaviour (I am french, so maybe it is not exactly how it is named in english...) I set the bulbs to "re-ignition after a power failure"...I have also tried the "Ajusted" setting for some other bulbs, with the same purpose. After that, when I switch OFF and ON, always after a few seconds, sometimes it will restore the previous settings (70% brightness) and some times it will set to 100%, that seems to be the default Hue settings. Yesterday it was 100%, then 70%, then 100%, then 70%, without touching a single app, just by switching OFF and ON...I can't find a way to adjust that. The only thing I tried is setting a Homekit automation that says : When the bulb lights up, activate standard 70% brightness scene. But it doesn't seem to fix anything. Have I been clear enough ? Do you have a solution to simply use Homekit to deal with that ? Don't hesitate if you have any question ! Keep posting your videos, it is a great job !
Hi David. So here is why I think you are getting 70%, then 100% and repeating...So the phillips hue bulbs have a feature to "quickly get bright white light by switching your power off/on twice to go back to default white state." So you need to wait several seconds in between power cycles to return to that 70%. On a side note, I usually don't recommend using smart bulbs with traditional light switches. And the reason is that every time you flip that light switch, it cuts off the connection to the hub and to homekit. Therefore using automations or siri to control the lights will no longer work until that light switch is turned back on. Instead, I recommend using smart wall switches with traditional light bulbs when you want to still use wall switches. This way you can use the wall switch and still maintain a connection to homekit. I made a video a while back using Lutron Caseta wall switches, and they work great. That's just my preference. i hope that makes sense and helps. Thanks for watching and supporting!
@@ShaneCreates Thanks a lot for your quick response ! Unfortunately, I already took this factor into consideration^^. That's why I mentioned "always after a few seconds", but I wasn't specific enough. So apparently there is no way to set a default brightness/color using Hue or Homekit...I was hoping there would be some kind of internal memory for each bulb to remember what to do before they can reach the connection to the hub after a switch off. It is in my schedule to get smart switches, I just hoped I could have something more functional before that. I'll check on your Lutron Caseta video to see that. The difficulty is that, when you already have switches that are some kind of "nice to see", adding a smart switch that looks totally different can break the uniformity of the installation. I just have ton convince my wife to change them all ^^'. Thanks again !
David-Alexandre BADAROU haha understand that. Gotta make the wife happy. But to your original point, it seems in my hue app that configuring the “power on behavior” seems to work for me. I can either choose the hue default (full brightness), last used color and brightness, or custom (choose color and brightness). Seems to work for me.
@@ShaneCreates Hi Shane ! I am coming back to you 5 months after your answer, because I would like to get smart switches for my home, to control both bulbs & shutters. But I am struggling to know if a smart switch & a smart bulb will work together properly. I have Philips Hue bulbs, and would like to control them with Legrand smart switchs (because at the moment I already have dumb Legrand switchs everywhere, and we would like to keep things homogeneous). Do you think it will work properly ? Legrand smart switch have incorporated dimmer, do you think it will work to change the brightness of the Philips Hue bulb, and then be reflected into the Philips & Apple Home app ? Thanks !
