Not something I'd seek out (even via an LFG randomly popping up unless the pitch was exceptional), but something I suspect I'd enjoy if someone I knew invited me to play it. I particularly like the fact it has a tight inventory system with zero maths (Although without having played either, suspect I'd have more fun with Mausritter's tile laying backpack minigame version - Basically if you're familiar with Resident Evil 4's Apache case, it's a fantasy, tabletop, version of that)

It reminds me of the old red box basic D & D. It would be good for introducing new players to roleplaying.

I feel like a lot of people might see shadowdark and immediately imagine a dark souls style campaign, but I’m just seeing the deadly enemies, frail adventurers, and inventory management and thinking to myself: “Man, this would make a great system for a classic Resident Evil inspired campaign”. Imagine having to navigate an old castle or abandoned village, fighting off undead and watching out for the Nemesis-style super monster that can’t be defeated and just has to be avoided or trapped temporarily. That’d be super fun imo.

You just described how D&D used to be played pre-Wotc. Its a perfect system for a resident evil type adventure. Especially the oldschool Ravenloft adventures. They were survival horror. I'm totally stoked Arcane Library created a modern version of oldschool D&D.

This was such a well-done walkthrough! :) Thank you for taking a close look at the game. You've zeroed in very perceptively on a lot of the underlying design intent. The thing I had to chuckle about is that, to me, all high-level witches are Babas because they all see each other as respected equals regardless of philosophy. You never know by their title if they're working with you, or against you... ;)

SlyFlourish is dming one of this for a while. One recommendation he made is having an org the pcs are part of, so that if most of the pcs die, they have an easy way of building new characters to continue the adventure: they are part of the same org so can have mostly the same goals.

I almost always roll on the drinking table if my GM lets me, and I encourage my players too as well. If the trinket makes sense for the character at first glance great, or if they just want to pick one, great! If the trinket is incongruous, we come up with an event that would have led to them getting it, or I start them off with a plot hook for a possibility of finding out what this weird thing is that they found

Glad ShadowDark is getting love! Just a couple things were a bit off: 10 is the minimal amount of slots a character can carry; if their Strength is over 10, they get an amount of slots equal to their Strength score. There is also another very important way to level up: one of my favorite features, Carousing. It highly encourages role playing and for players not to hoard their gold. If anyone's looking for any example play, this channel has quite a few episodes. For additional classes, I highly encourage players to also look at the Cursed Scroll along with Unnatural Selection - the choices are really fun. Great video, Mike! Thanks for giving attention to other systems.

Great video. I would comment that the only cumbersome part of character creation is equipment, so I would advise replacing the gold roll and gear acquisition for this "starter pack" (it's like the for random npcs in the book, with a few tweaks): - 1 weapon of your choice - 1 leather armor or 1 shield (if you are proficient) - 1 crawling kit - 5 gold pieces, replaceable on a 1-to-1 basis for 1 slot of ammo or 1 dagger. Way faster without losing that much customization. (If you want anything else, just explore the dungeon and loot it xD )

I feel like it's worth pointing out, a large number of these rules come from Dungeon Crawl Classics, and moreover they come indirectly from 1st and 2nd edition DnD. I feel like we don't give enough due to the older editions of DnD when discussing these OSR games.

When I saw the random rolls for the class Talents, that immediately won me over. As for the Shadowdark rules, I've incorporated Encumbrance Slots, Death Timer, Encounter Tables and removed Darkvision from the ancestries. Since I'm running a Greyhawk campaign, there are fewer ancestries which have been house-ruled as well. The Encumbrance Slots makes tracking equipment so much easier. I once had a player who insisted on carrying at least four weapons and tried to pick up more. I had to come down hard on that nonsense, Slots make it all quite clear. There's no reduction of movement - either you can carry something or you can't. AD&D's encumbrance rules are fiddly just as 5e's are. Shadowdark's Encumbrance Slots may not be perfect but they have the virtue of simplicity. I intend to run Shadowdark as written eventually, especially since getting the book. That will mean changing some of my habits and expectations, too.

Just one thing I'd like to point out. XP is not exclusively awarded for treasure in Shadowdark RAW. According to rules for awarding XP (page 117) those are gained by: • Gold and gems • Oaths, secrets, and blessings • Magic items • Meaningful trophies/tokens • Clever thinking Oaths, secrets and blessings are further explained on page 200. For example Oaths are favours owned by NPCs or factions (for example a promise made by dwarven forgemaster to make for a PC a spectacular sword, or a promise made by duke that he will procure an audience with the queen for the party). So you are not forced to play a treasure hunting campaign exclusively - for example in investigation or intrigue heavy campaign main source of XP may be discovering Secrets.

The whole "0 level" thing started with Dungeon Crawl Classics. Over there it's called a funnel. I actually think that "Gauntlet" is a better term for that mode of play, but it started with the "0 level funnel" at DCC, at any rate. Goodman Games started that whole trend

I've become a fan of Dungeon Crawl Classics since getting back into the hobby a few years ago. It's odd, because it's very much not my kind of game. I did a lot of my roleplaying in the 90s, when character & story were paramount and dungeon crawling & crunch were sort of passé. Frankly, character and story are still my preferred style. But DCC captured something that I really enjoy. The funnel (like the gauntlet in Shadowdark) is part of it. The total randomness of your little pack of 3 or 4 characters actually makes you, perhaps counterintuitively, super invested in whichever one(s) survives. Like, "that poor little dude made it this far, I sure hope he can keep going now that he's got a sword and some armor." As someone pointed out, you don't need to write some deep back story, because you pretty much play through the backstory in the funnel. Again, it's not the only way I'd want to play, or even my preferred way. But for the style of game, I think the gauntlet/funnel is a key element. I keep thinking Shadowdark looks like a very well designed and tested game, and I want to support it, but I don't think I'd ever actually play it. DCC scratches whatever "old school" itch I might have, and I've already sunk a bunch of money into it. Whatever the case, I hope folks enjoy it. More games doing well and getting played makes me happy.

I'm happy to get more Shadowdark content from you! I'm loving the game. It's Old School but easy to pick up when you come in from 5e and with a modern mindset. I still don't think it's as deadly as people make it out to be. You have to play smarter than 5e and not attack everything on sight. But besides that, characters still have a lot of means to accomplish their goals. Great overview and I liked that you also showcased the digital tools, which by now are officially licensed and still 100% free!

The Gauntlet sounds very similar to the way The All Guardsman Party got started. I haven't read that stuff in years, but it was based in Warhammer 40k and I think the idea was that they just rolled up like 20 guardsmen each and put them through the meat grinder. The characters who survived were the characters they could use and their backups for when they died.

I really didn’t think shadow dark would be for me. I really like the deep dive into my character and to know they will probably die is a discouraging thought. That said seeing the character creation process made me think a little differently about it. Like instead of a meal I obsess over the characters of shadow dark can be like small and flavorful punches of archetypes and be like the snacks off a charcuterie board filled with interesting cheese and meat ect that can pair in a variety of ways. Like getting a lot of different micro experiences I guess in a smaller amount of time. Interesting. I wonder if there is a way to put this concept someplace not so gritty and dark despite the name. Like instead of torches in the shadow dark maybe a box of tinder twigs that cast true sight in the fry realm or something 🤔

I have played in and/or ran about 40 sessions so far. I find that the tone of the table (heavily influenced by the GM, of course) can have the game play campy or darker. I would not assume that you will automatically have a Grimdark experience. In fact, because the characters are so weak at early levels, the game can have its comic moments. But it's a great game. It reminds me of the D&D I played as a kid. It's so much faster and more streamlined than 5E.

6:20 I feel the problem isn't player-facing, it's GM facing. Like Bonds, these are things that Game Masters ought to tie into upcoming campaigns (not unlike how Beyond the Wall uses Threat packs that have PCs provide specific locations/NPCs to tie the players into the setting), but I'd argue 5e doesn't provide the same kind of support to DMs. IMO it's a winning design to make it.accessible for newer.players, but boy oh boy can it be dau ting to newer GMs - and so leaves things like Trinkets, Bonds, or Background perks by the wayside

I feel like it is important to reiterate that the game is trying to serve a very specific fantasy and it is important that everyone buys into that. It's not a heroic narrative about heroes, its about going into a dark and dangerous world where death lurks around every corner, with the hopes of emerging with enough money to pay for repairs and rent and a few meals. And if you're really good at it and get pretty lucky, maybe something more. Well, that's my take anyway.

Mike, with you exploring a bunch of new to you systems at the moment, it might be useful to both yourself and folk in your audience to dedicate at least one of these character building videos to converting a character between systems, since that can be an interesting challenge as different systems not only have different mathematics (D&D and Pathfinder care about the same things in their games, but the numbers look vastly different) but an emphasis on different parts of a character (If you try and convert a D&D Rogue to Blades in the Dark... The focus of the character is likely to shift, and how you keep the same core essence of the character and interpret them to systems that care about completely different things can be a challenge)
@zefiewings
@zefiewings 4 месяца назад
Im a bit torn about this system. I love survival horror so at first glance it would be up my alley. But on the other hand, if it's just a meat grinder; if it has no RP, no character, and no personal stakes, then it's not really horror. And the whole point of TTRPGs, for me, is the character stakes. because if I'm just a voiceless protagonist then I'll just play a video game. But I do wonder if it's possible to get the survival horror I would want out of this. I guess I'd have to see it in action or try it if I get a chance, its hard to say.
@merethif
@merethif 4 месяца назад
How did you come to conclusion there's no RP in RP game? OSR games may been seen as a meat grinder only for players who don't know any other strategies to solve problems then kicking down the doors and hack and slash their way through any obstacle (popular attitude in games where character are superheroes like 5e). Less HP don't mean a character will die (a common misconception) - it only means you have to use RP, diplomacy, deception, stealth, clever thinking and environment advantages during not-so-friendly encounters. And DM have to role play opponents as living beings with their own motives and desires and fears, not mindless cannon fodder. I've run just short SD campaign so far (like 12 sessions or so) but we had only one PC death in it, and it took place during intense moment when players consciously took the risk, not a "random goblin's arrow" kind of death. Long story short, I'm running or playing in several campaigns atm, each in different system: Shadowdark, Old School Essentials, Pirate Bork, D&D 5e, Call of Ctulhu and Brindlewood Bay - and I'm yet to see any difference in level of RP amongst those system.
@zefiewings
@zefiewings 4 месяца назад
@merethif I didn't come to that conclusion, I meant I didn't know one way or another. I was just saying I'll have to see it in action to know if it's more darkest dungeon crawl or survival horror style, because it's hard to tell. And it's certainly, as always, depending on the group. But at least with games like pathfinder or d&d there are skills and stuff, there exists mechanics that indicate you would be doing stuff other than combat. I fully believe you have to be tactical playing this game, but a tactical dungeon crawl is still not heavy rp. Being stealthy and clever is important but it's still another form of combat not rp. This isn't meant to be a criticism of the game either, just me musing that it's hard for me to tell at a glance if it would be a game for me or not.
@merethif
@merethif 4 месяца назад
@@zefiewings I see what you mean, but I believe D&D5e is one of the most combat-focused RPG - with each class being combat-centred and having most of its feature related to combat or things like Challenge Ratings of encounters suggesting that each encounter is is combat encounter. Most 5e players I know can't wait for another combat to show off their powers and got boring if no combat happens for to long. I was running The Wild beyond the Witchlight in 5e once for a group that was into RP rather then combat and it went great and we were having a blast, but players were ignoring most of their class features because they were overwhelmed by those lengthy, crunchy combat-oriented features (for example bard never used Mantle of Inspiration or Mantle of Majesty) so this campaign would be a blast whether we were using 5e or any other system. I find 5e more suitable for PvP combat arena style of games thanks to having every action clearly and precisely ruled (without place for arbitrary rulings and hand-waving details like distances). And you have all the rules for doing all non-combat stuff in SD as in any other system. There are Charisma checks if you'd like to roll how your social interaction went. You just don't have named skills with proficiency bonus. Still there are class features that gives you advantage on certain checks (for example Bard has advantage on Charisma rolls when giving public speeches or performing, while Thief has advantage on Charisma rolls when trying to pretend to be someone else). It's just more free form and situational. You also got rules for travelling, climbing, swimming, holding breath, picking locks... you name it :-D Of course SD, having its roots in D&D, is more combat oriented then, let's say, Brindlewood Bay, but still less then 5e in my opinion.
@pewprofessional3181

Old-school TTRPGS required wayyy more RP than modern editions. And not "Roleplaying," as in this is drama class. Everyone had a specific "Role" to play within the group.Lots of describing, communicating, teamwork. They challenge the players themselves, not whats on your character sheet like we see today.None of this walking into a room and rolling perception checks like a video game button. You didn't roll dice everytime your character does something. If you described where and how you were searching, it usually didn't require a roll. You didn't need a charisma check to see if you were able to pursuade someone, or a deception check if you were trying to be deceitful, if you described how you were being deceitful, or told a great lie to the NPC, it usually worked without having to roll.
@merethif
@merethif 4 месяца назад
@@pewprofessional3181 100% agree, and that's how I play. That said, Shadowdark is not really OSR, it's a hybrid between modern and OSR and you can tweak it to be more OSR or more modern and that's great thing about SD imo. If you are coming from 5e, and feel anxiety without dice rolling for everything, you are provided with the rules. For example it is written in the rules that you can make an Int/Wis check to find a trap and that a Thief has a feature that gives them advantage on that roll.

I mean, there's really no guidance on what to do with Trinkets, either as a player or a DM. And they're not created equally for player interest. Some are magical oddities, some are story hooks, and some are literally just pieces of random garbage. I wish Trinkets got used more, but I've never seen an example of a group doing anything with one (ok, the red egg hatched once, but that was on request from a player who thought it was a psuedodragon)

EXACTLY. No DM guidance. The issue I realized I had with 5e (and 3.5, for that matter) was that the game books doesn't really tell GMs how to run a game well. As much as I've love my time with the systems, it's always been as a player. I think this is why

My cleric of Pelor had "a candle that won't light", and I pretty much took it as a challenge to make that useless item into something meaningful. I said my church mentor gave me the candle as a rite of passage, a religious mystery to solve, and I described spending downtime during my evening prayers meditating on its significance and trying to light it by magic. When I had to leave the campaign early IRL, I described my character getting frustrated with his church's inaction against the vampires gaining power in the campaign, and going home to confront the church leadership and try to talk them into sending reinforcements. As part of his crisis of faith he left the candle behind, giving it to the party druid as a kind of "passing the torch" gesture, and the DM ended up writing a purpose for it into a later session. Trinkets are optional roleplaying prompts, that's all; either give them a meaning or don't bother with them. The open-endedness is the whole point.

Less on the character sheet, more freedom to try anything you can imagine, which can make it very thematic. More rules, less imagination. I think people have forgotten what freedom feels like. They need rules to tell them they can express themselves. OSR doesn't require rules for that. Your free to have all the self expression you want. 5e you can only do whats within the confines of all those rules. OSR is 'Rulings', not 'Rules.'
