Altars are not just for religious places of worship. As a matter of fact, people have been creating sacred spaces in their homes for 1000's of years, and you can too! They have many purposes such as commemorating special loved ones, bringing forth prayers to ancestors, special gods and deities, and to carry out spells. The beauty of an altar is that you can create it yourself and you can change it as you like.

One thing I didn't mention when you are choosing a place to put your alter is be aware of the curiosity of your pets and children. They will naturally be drawn to your alter, so you may wish to put matches and lighters away and anything else that could harm them.
