I do related to this discussion today. I have retired from a 50+ year career in hospital laboratory. Everything was precise and accurate, now I'm trying to learn how to just play and experiment in ways because no one can be hurt by not following the rules. TY
Oh My !!! These books look so inviting and so informative! I'll be ordering at least two, okay maybe more 🤣. This just seems to be perfectly timed for me, and exactly what I need. Thank you for sharing, and for sharing your reasoning for your love of abstracts, and imperfections. I get that so much after spending 40 yrs working in a career of precision in numbers. Yay for new seasons in life!!!! And...I know I've said it before but you absolutely exude your JOY in every video you present, and it's delightfully contagious! I feel so blessed to be a recipient of that joy!
Fantastic video. Thank goodness my husband is very supportive of my watercolor journey. Not cheap but worth every penny. Love to collect books so now I've more to collect and use for inspiration. I tend toward abstract though I am also trying to draw. At 71 I'm stimulating my aging brain to keep it young!
Thank you so much Denise for sharing such great info about art and color and always helping us all discover who we are meant to be as artists. Your joy in art is infectious in the best ways!!
Thank you so much Denise, I really really enjoyed looking through those gorgeous books and like you I love ❤️ that last book because it’s really really stunning and gorgeous too. And it speaks to me. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags ❤❤❤❤
Denise I love everyone of these books! I very much appreciate that you showed us so much of the book while explaining exactly why you like it and how you might use the information in your art. Thank you for sharing such a wonderful selection of books!
Thank you for this video Denise! I am at the very start of my painting journey and find myself becoming very overwhelmed by supplies, ideas, techniques etc. Your calming, joyful and knowledgeable voice helps me immensely. Thank you for sharing your insights on these beautiful books but also for sharing your thoughts on the creative process itself and pointing out the things that many of us struggle with and how to work through those struggles. I am so grateful to have found you.
Denise...the new amount of art supplies I have, I can thank all your classes here and on Skillshare. Good thing I'm a pawrent and not a parent...kids are way more expensive than dogs and art supplies! And now you have me building an art library too? Lol, I just turned 50 and I don't know that I'm going to live long enough to use all these fun things!
I’m a pawrent too… my neighbor calls one of my dogs my Cadillac dog… because she has had some expensive health issues… I can’t even imagine the expense of children 😂😂😂
Denise, what an ultra fanTASSStic vid❣️❣️❣️❣️ Thank you sooooo much. You are a bundle of fun and joy that demonstrates what it is to have fun with our art and creativity. LOVE listening and watching and painting with you. ♥️
You seem to be speaking to me, lovely lady, so generous with your knowledge. I look for your videos constantly, AND, and following you on Skillshare 💥 Keep on being you. You are inspirational ❤
This is so fun! I already have a couple of these books and Painting Calm has been sitting in my Amazon cart for weeks. Now I obviously need to add Confident Color to it and plunk down my $ and get on with things. Also? The Color Cubes are arriving today! I’m clearly out of control, but in a good way (I think). 😂 Denise, honestly, your videos have done more to finally get me creating than anything else I’ve done in years. Thank you. ❤
Hi Denise, I love your book suggestions! I have a few of these already and plan to order two from today’s list. Love your videos and tutorials. Keep doing your thang🥰❤️👏
Thank you for sharing these books. I love Rae. I have been a watcher of hers on yt for a long time. But the "breaker of rules" is why i sent my hubby to law school. LOL 😂 these are all wonderful books and a great way to describe learning the rules and breaking those chains. I believe we are the worst critics of our own art work. Im licky that one of my sons loves art as much as i do and we bounce off our projects with each other and listen and encourage each other.i just learned that the more picasso i make something the better i love it.❤❤❤ hope you have a fabulous weekend.
I can sort of understand what you mean all though you had to work even harder at perfection. I used to scrapbook back in the day and we did everything so perfectly and precise. Everything was measured and carefully placed. When I started junk journaling and mixed media it was such a freeing experience. I never wanted to do anything perfectly again. I like a slight mess and have a greater understanding of abstract than I did before.
Exactly!! I'm so glad to let that all go... it was so much work... and not much fun really... I love what I do now and the fun I have getting messy and imperfect! 🥰
Thank you. Loved this❤ Style is a whole video on its own I think. I’m glad you touched on it as that is the question I myself have asked too. One freeing thing for me as I learned more was I’m eclectic and love just any type of art/Papercrafts etc. I’m yet to find something that is distinctly recognizable to be “me” yet in certain groups/pages for example, like your FB group most come to expect I’ll be stamping on my paintings. But others groups, that’s a norm to do that. I hope I am making sense. Probably not. I also found after being on a design team, then leaving it, I found my “freedom” to not be restricted by the products I had to work with and that has continued to take me on my journey of finding my style and enjoying my art, because I’m having FUN. And I found more fun and joy when I found your channel. It gave me the permission and the “want” to just do something so freeeing. Thank you!
Thank you for this video. What a great opportunity for us to get a sneak peek of books we hesitate to buy because we don’t know what’s in them. Rae Missigman is a wonderful artist. Her book is from five years ago, and now she seems to be doing primarily watercolors with an emphasis on botanicals. She has a wonderful collection of stencils with stencil girl. I have been following her for quite a while.
That is a great book by Rae... in 5 years I'm sure I'll be onto my next newest obsession too... and have 100 more turns in between... so glad there are things out there like this to document our progress and where we go next! 😊
I really like when you share your "library". I am starting to amass quite a collection also - and I also just got the Painting Calm book. I really enjoy it so far. I may not get any of these other books - but I do have them on my "wish list" should I start looking for more inspiration. So - I thank you for sharing. Always informative....
Loving that first book as it looks like it explains things to a greater degree than others I've tried. I will be ordering it soon. In the meantime, I need to take the Color Cubes and swatch the colors to see what happens when the colors blend and note what colors to let blend and what colors are hideous when they blend. That has always been an issue with me no matter what medium I'm using.
Swatching out colors is a great idea. I love doing little samplers for that reason, it is a little bit more exciting than just swatching for me. Happy painting!! 🎨
This is a fantastic and very imformative video, Denise. I just ordered Paint Play Explore and I'm so excited for something new to draw from. I am a very linear person and most likley made a great draftsman. I was always intrigued by the tables and supplies in High School when I'd walk past the mechanical drawing class ....... if I could only go back, but them my math skills were awful. I still find abstract difficult for me because of my mind set, but I'm working on it. Love ALL your videos and you are such an inspiration. Thank you for all you do and for all the sharing that takes place in your video's 🤗 xo Barbie
I was just beginning to control my temptation to stock up art books. Thanks, Denise for making me tempted again 🤐🥴🙄 just kidding..do appreciate you sharing this.. helps to take a look before purchasing them and having it for yourself..
I love it when you do these book videos. I have the painting calm book and I love it. I also have the 1500 color mixing techniques book. I am still searching for the Sibella Court books….
So glad you enjoy these!! Those Sibella Court are some of my favorite, a bit older books - might look at used book stores to find those online possibly. 🥰
Love those. 3 of them instantly went to my wish list. One (Fresh Paint) I will be getting right away. Yay! So inspiring. Oh and ps...I own some of your photography textures and I love them! :)
@@2lilowlsstudio The funny part is I didn't make the connection right away. Which is weird because you've mentioned photography many times. It just clicked today when you said textures and I went "wait a minute!". So I have loved your work twice - on their own merit :).
@@MsMoniqueWilson Haha! Someone else said that too... that they had been watching a few months... and one day it clicked... and they even had several photography workshops and some stuff off Design Cuts... 🥰
Thank you for sharing a bit of your library with us. I’m sorry to say I don’t have a single art techniques/color book but I’m going to remedy that after watching this video. Could you make a suggestion with these books for a single start for me? Thanks
So glad you enjoyed these... definitely go for the one that jumped out at you... that could have been the one that deep dived into color, or the ones where you got some painting techniques... color is hard - so that one could be helpful! 😊
Any cosmetologist who is interested in taking on painting as a hobby: I found that since color theory is a critical part of being able to effectively do haircolor, that foundation gave me a huge advantage when I started painting.
I couldn't agree more! I've been behind the chair for 30yrs, and anytime I take an art class, color theory is always relevant...so I'm grateful I learned the theory I now need for a different creative outlet!
It was in this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mbHhx9TPXNE.html ... this book: Color In and Out of the Garden by Lorene Edwards Forkner - amzn.to/3Ax1s4x
@@2lilowlsstudio Great, I have this book. I bought this book prior to watching your review. I love your videos on art supplies, books and experimentation. ❤️
