The more we localize - create local opportunities, new industries, etc. - the more self-reliant and sustainable our communities are. Since artists are often at the forefront of gentrification efforts, Shawn Dell Joyce is using the arts to attract tourism and bringing arts audiences out to farm fields instead of ivory towers. Shawn is Executive Director of the Wallkill River School, a nonprofit arts and agriculture organization that runs an art school and gallery in Montgomery, NY, and on farm fields, open spaces and historic sites throughout Orange County.
Shawn is also a nationally-syndicated newspaper columnist who writes "Sustainable Living," a weekly column geared toward living simply and local. She has won many awards for environmental activism and has been featured in the New York Times, Mothering Magazine, and many other national publications. She is a noted artist with works in museum collections in the Museum of Modern Art and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.*
