Hi folks I did not want to install a hitch or a roof rack so I found a creative solution for installing a bike rack (which is usually for trunks of sedans that are not hatch back) on a Prius Prime 2022.
I couldn't use the straps that came with this Allen Bike rack because the glass layer on the hatchback. instead I bought a longer strap for the bike rack and was able to use the roof bars to hold the rack in place. I have experimented this set up successfully with a bike. hope this helps.
This the roof rack that I got from amazon:
- www.amazon.com...
This is the cargo strap I got from ebay:
- www.ebay.com/i...

This is actually very clever ty for your time in making this video. I was in the same dilemma. Have you since tried two bikes on the bike rack? How do they fair?

Hi - I’ve been in process of setting up with the same setup seen in your video. Would comment/ Closeup picture of your straps how they connect on the roof cross bar. Thanks Rick

Clever, thanks! How much does your long range mileage reduce by, without wall charging, after your first 26 miles? What year prius prime is this? Please post a photo of your bicycle on your rack, it'd be great to see. My prius prime is 2017 and I'd like to drive 1800 miles to burning man in this configuration, so how long was your longest road trip in this configuration? How slow do you have to drive on dirt roads, less than 3 mph? Slow is fine with me, just curious. What top speed is comfortable on expressway in perfect conditions? In windy conditions? That question is totally subjective and based on this personal question you don't have to answer which is, how fast do you normally drive on expressway in perfect co ditions? Many thanks for your ingenuity!

I have a 2017 Prius Prime. As far as speed on good pavement, mine accelerates well until it indicates 104mph, then it acts as if you had set the cruise control to 104. In a couple of undisclosed locations, I've then set the radar cruise on 103 or 104 for a minute or two and it does fine. I had a really good set of 4 matched Michelins on the car, at almost their max inflation pressure to keep heat buildup down. Don't go really fast if you don't know what you're doing, and your car isn't handling PERFECTLY at every speed on the way up. If you can't corner hard perfectly at 80mph, don't go 85mph even straight. If there are gusty winds or high crosswinds, save the going fast for another time and place. In 2018 in Texas (80mph speed limit) I did a whole tank of gas with the cruise set at 94mph. No problems at all, except dropping mpg to around 33-34mpg. By the way, at 104mph it seemed to get 26mpg, but obviously I couldn't drive that fast for a whole tank. I had a chance to drive the car in crazy crosswinds. When the crosswind is strong enough that the airflow over the car is diagonal rather than front to back, the airflow "detaches" from the streamlined shape of the car, and the drag goes WAY up. Almost like you completely let off the gas, or hit the brakes lightly to moderately. What is fun, is driving when the car is just on the verge of that, where strange things happen. Slowing down a little detaches the flow, buffets you around, and feels like hitting the brakes. Speeding up reattaches the flow and makes the ride smooth again. It's about the only scenario where speeding up saves you gas. Obviously don't do this in traffic or on curvy roads where a curve changes the wind direction relative to the car. But down a straight, empty road in the middle of nowhere, it was very educational. I also managed to drive right through a dust devil (mild, mini-tornado) one time. I saw a dozen of them swirling around, and picked out when/where one was going to cross the road, and managed to put myself on a collision course for it. It was about the same as being on a 2-lane road and an 18-wheeler going 80mph past you in the opposite direction. Pushes you a foot to the side, then right back. I've found that a full charge acts pretty exactly like 0.5 gallons of gas. If I drive 90 miles and get 90mpg average, I don't think of it as getting 90mpg. I think of it as going 90 miles on 1.0 actual gallons of gas and electricity equivalent to 0.5 gallons of gas. So, the car got 60mpg, I just chose to use rather than keep the 0.5 gallons of it that was from electricity, because if I hadn't used it, I couldn't plug in and "make" another 0.5 gallons from my garage outlet. How fast to go on dirt roads totally depends upon the condition of the road. I've gone 65mph on a dirt road in the snow. I've also crept along a few feet at a time squeezing between boulders and scratchy desert bushes while crawling over rocks like a wannabe Jeep, just more worried due to low clearance. But on an average rough dirt road out west, I mostly vary between 10mph and 40mph, until I need to slow way down if the ruts might be deep enough to scape the bottom of the car on the center of the track. Then I try finding room to put one tire up on the center and the other tire up on the edge outside the rut. On a recent trip, I went deep into the center of Kofa NWR in Arizona on an increasingly rutted dirt/gravel/rock road. I made it 16 miles in before having to turn back from it getting too soft and sandy. Then In Nevada, I got to some really remote, really difficult places, albeit by taking some heavy scratching from bushes overgrowing an old Jeep trail and then what really couldn't even be called a trail. I forgot to mention, I use oversized tires. I would never use the stock size of 195/65R15 89S. I usually use 205/65R15XL 99T, but have used the even bigger 215/65R15 96T. T means 118mph instead of the stock S which is 112mph. The 89, 96, and 99 are load index numbers for max load carrying capacity. The XL means heavier construction, plus the fact that they don't reach max load rating until 42psi rather than the usual 36psi. I buy only tires with 50 or 51psi max pressure rating on the sidewall. I usually run them at 50psi, but that can make the handling quicker and twitchier than most people (who are used to gross understeer from the scandalously low inflation pressures on the car's door jamb) can handle.

Very helpful idea! Could you give a bit more information about the straps you got from ebay and how they are connected to your roof rack? The URL you put in the description was truncated (and the product may not exist anyway), so photos and details would be helpful. Thanks!

How do you avoid the sensors on the back of a Prius being triggered by the rack and bikes?
@jtpriusprimeowner2822
@jtpriusprimeowner2822 Год назад
What sensor are you referring to? If you are talking about the back camera, it just took some awareness while putting the track on but I was able to put on the bike rack without touching the back camera (and having several inches in between where the back rack hooked onto the back and where the camera is). I hope this answers your question!

Very clever - how much does your bike weigh - I have a rad city e-bike, about 80 lbs I think - want to make sure I don't bend any body work eh?
