The sampling of existing audio or music can be a rich source of inspiration for new music. If you decide to get Push, 2, use this link amzn.to/2Dk0vgZ and I'll receive a small commission (you'll pay the same price). Enjoy! :)
Episode 2: "Prepared Push" (or: "convert, convert, convert")
With some recent changes in Ableton Live 9.5 together with the new Push 2, I explore some ways of working with them to (hopefully) provide some ideas and inspiration.
In this episode I take as an example "Alma" by Hauschka aka Volker Bertelman.
Hoping that it was interesting to watch, feedback always welcome, and do please subscribe if you'd like to watch more!
Thanks,
Andri

Headphones:
Beyerdynamic 990 pro (open-backed) for clarity and comfort,
Amazon.com: amzn.to/38uydyR

(note the higher ohm rating, meaning these need to be driven at a louder volume - just good to know)
Beyerdynamic 770 pro (closed-backed) for bass and sound-isolation.

Videos from 2018 and earlier:
Macbook Late 2012, i7 2.6 (quad core) non-retina, 16GB RAM, 2x custom-installed 500GB SSDs (get one, seriously, it will change your life). This computer has been just amazing, and for me proof of the (generally) incredibly long life-span of Apple computers (I repeat, in my experience). It now backs up my data and acts as a video-capture computer.
iMac 27" Late 2009. So, so old, but it still works as a second monitor, using a (carefully researched) displayport cable. Just fantastic that some iMacs have this capability, and again something I appreciate as it means I don't have to throw it away.
Soundcard: Scarlett 6i6 V1 - very happy with this, provides two headphones outputs, important for using cue in Ableton.
Amazon.com: amzn.to/3aGXUhs. (8i6 V3)
Amazon.de: amzn.to/2TQOoBc (8i6 V3)
Speakers: I don't recommend what I had back then at all! I would recommend looking at something like the iLoud speakers (now available in white :D).
Amazon.com: amzn.to/2W6RBjd
Amazon.de: amzn.to/39Lxx9G
In short, buy the very best you can afford - you won't regret it. Shop local if you can, or support them now and then, they give us invaluable help and advice.

I really admire and thank a lot when I see people like you! I am also musician and work in the same environment. I don't own a push controller, but I fight against time, and love to make music, but time is the most "hard enemy". When I see people like you, taking their own valuable time to teach tricks, methods, strategies, information, whatever!!!. I really have to get on my knees and "bless" you!!!! Thank you!!!!!

I decided a while ago Push 2 is out of my price range, considered getting Push 1 or even one of the 3rd generation Launch Pads. Today, one day after I decided to go with Launchpad Pro mk3, I started thinking I might as well get Push 1 instead; cheaper and more powerful. I finally watched a Push 2 video since I had never seen anyone who really knows their way around it before, and wow, screw price ranges. I'm saving for this!

I had to hang in there, but the end result was very nice!! I was impressed when he took the drum rack piano sound to play separately in a major scale at 16:50 for about 25 seconds. Also a little earlier the percussion simpler track was cool (11:29). I think Push 2 really succeeds at making Ableton feel and work like a separate hardware instrument. What if it really was a separate hardware instrument...

When you were trying to get the single sample as a playable instrument you were making it a loop that basically sounded like a delay. You need to look for a setting that makes that loop reverse at the end of it and it sounds way better than what you had going. If you can’t find it in simpler right click and convert to sampler and you’ll find the setting there, should look like an arrow above a reverse arrow

They're really responsive and you can adjust the sensitivity which is great. Main difference is that obviously they're smaller - I guess it's just matter of opinion which pads suit your fingers and style more. Try them out somewhere if you have the possibility

hey there! i really like your creative workflow, i myself have been thinking about getting a push for a while... ive been trying to go into a 100% hardware setup but i find that it's very costly to get anything actually good to use. so i think i'll disregard and just get a push finally. now im more interested in the push 1 since it's cheaper and still very good so here is my question: I heard that ableton will give very similar functionality to the P1 (for stuff that's ableton specific not hardware) but obviously withou the goregeous new screen. Could you perhaps make a comparison between the push 1 and 2 in the sense of the new features and what works with the push 1 still? i know you already did a video about the differences but it was more along the lines of: look at all these new things push 2 has.. maybe one about how the push 1 was/will be updated to the new 9.5 features? i can't afford the push 2
@joshsterckx
@joshsterckx 8 лет назад
+fayekhelmi I'm also thinking of buying a Push 1 as I can't afford a Push 2. Ableton have said they will keep supporting and improving Push 1 alongside Push 2, so it won't be ditched. If you are concerned that Push 1 isn't as advanced, it can do nearly everything Push 2 can for much cheaper, and if Push 2 didn't exist it would still be the best controller you could possibly get for use with Live :) hope this helps a bit

this is brilliant, Thanks so much.. I come from Rock & Jazz.. and i play several instruments. I want to get into Live Looping, so i am switching to Ableton.. and trying to decide wether a controler would be the final approach. Push 2 looks great, IF you master it like you do..!, off course. It's almost standalone, which i wish it was.. Would you complement this with a Maschine Jam, or an Akai APC 40 mkII ?? Cheers from Portugal.
@AndriSoren
@AndriSoren 5 лет назад
Thank you so much! Sorry for the slow response. I have to say that from my perspective there isn't a "one machine to rule them all" out there, because like it or not, they are all very dependent on how one can set up the respective software to work as you want it. It took me a year or so to work out how I wanted to play, and then to make a liveset in Ableton that would fit that. Happily what I wanted and what was possible were a match. In short, I would say that Ableton feels a lot more "modular" and flexible than other alternatives (especially all-hardware boxes) but this means that you really need to spend time "building" your liveset, and adding elements that allow you to move quickly and get into (And stay) in your "flow"/"jazz" state. Preparation and patience are key. Hope that helps! Let me know! Oh and Portugal is a beautiful place. Andri

Maschine Jam is a very nice feeling controller and assuming it works at the same time as Push, which it should, I think it makes for a great clip launcher plus the eight touch strips. I’ve never gotten hands on the APC so I can’t really compare. Never touched Launchpad in person either for some reason! I’d say if you might use Maschine too, then of course Jam is the ideal extra controller to have.

I notice pad light latency when you select/play slices. Any comment on that?
@Kylessox31
@Kylessox31 4 года назад
if you turn down buffer size in settings if will create less latency, turn it up there will be more latency when an instrument is played. however the lower the buffer size the more CPU resources will be used which will be more taxing on your computer, so you will have to adjust the buffer size to see whats right for you and what your CPU can handle

@BlazeBoltSniper
@BlazeBoltSniper 8 лет назад
+TheJayKellz what do you mean by stretch the time?
@TheJayKellz
@TheJayKellz 8 лет назад
when you have a clip or whatever... changing the bp will warp the audio so it is in sync with the bpm.... essentially stretching the audio or shrinking it to fit 4 bars for example.... how do you warp/stretch without the audio being synced to the current bp
@BlazeBoltSniper
@BlazeBoltSniper 8 лет назад
+TheJayKellz Turn on/off Warp.
@Shipman420
@Shipman420 8 лет назад
+TheJayKellz You don't, you just turn warping off, unless you actually want to move the warp markers around on your laptop/computer, but if the clip is in any warp mode it will always speed up/slow down according to the tempo

Hi Lewie - sorry for my slow response!! Did you find the solution?
@localandonlinepreciousmeta3575
Andri Søren care to elaborate, regardless? Viewers would still appreciate the answer. Even though it’s late, it’s still an answer. Js. Enjoy your Push 2 🍻

gabriel besong dude, google it. Try ebay, even the Abelton website sell them direct (but more than ebay).

why all the popping and clicking? Is it the way you trimmed the sample in simpler?

most likely!

A quick fade in/out gets rid of it. A ping pong delay throws it around in in the stereo field. A bit of EQ can mellow it out. Lots of options 😌

your videos are awesome but im getting bombarded with ads.. man i miss youtube red.. hahaha.. you do make the best push videos so its worth it though
@AndriSoren
@AndriSoren 5 лет назад
Thanks man! Really appreciate that. Also very grateful that you flagged the number of ads. Lately I've been pondering how I can come back to RU-vid and make more videos, so I thought I'd test out adjusting the number and type of ads - specifically to see if this would increase views and also ad revenue (as a way of easing the pain of taking time off work to make the videos). I think I left the test on a little bit too long, so my apologies for that! The really interesting thing I learned is that RU-vid serves up the video more if it has ads activated and also if there are more of them. But too much is too much, so clearly a better balance is necessary :) I'll fix this just now. Thanks again, and hope you're doing well out there!
@AndriSoren

oh - and didn't they replace RU-vid Red with RU-vid Premium? I might consider it as well. I have a friend who really doesn't like ads (understandably) so I just suggested he sign up to avoid them. He didn't seem convinced, but perhaps the idea will "incept" itself into his brain later, ha!
@ChazSeamus28
@ChazSeamus28 5 лет назад
Oh yeah, I think your right about RU-vid red.. they changed it to premium right around the time I cancelled. I remember the process wasn't that hard to cancel either like some other companies. . Google was pretty decent and I even spoke to someone on the phone believe or not which is a rarity nowadays. Keep up the good work man.. you got some dope content. Currently looking for a new midi keyboard.. have any suggestions? the novation mk3 and the keylab mk2 both look pretty amazing.
@AndriSoren
@AndriSoren 5 лет назад
ChazSeamus28 that is rare having someone on the phone - although who knows, that might have been trialling that impressive AI voice 😅 I don’t use midi keyboards that much (I have a kawai electric piano for keys) but I’ve heard good things about both of those. A friend needed one lately and he went for the NI A25, and he seems pretty happy. Quite large for what it is, but nicely made for the money.

Are you going to cover the scales, notes, etc.? Everyone's going over the sampling and performance features. No one is really covering the melodic section of the Push. I don't know why.
@AndriSoren
@AndriSoren 8 лет назад
+flypurplestars Hello! I only have limited time to make these videos so chose to go over the aspects I find personally the most interesting and/or new. That said, it would be nice to do more. Ableton however have made their own and go into some detail on the melodic aspect here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UqFxK9eoZYE.html - hope that helps

+flypurplestars Andri, like others, is highlighting the features which standout from Push 1. The melodic aspect of Push 1 was mind blowing when it first came out. And now... Push 1 users are excited about the new Simpler and new sampling possibilities. I'd be interested to hear Andri's take on the Maschine 2 vs Push 2 sampling comparison.
@flypurplestars
@flypurplestars 8 лет назад
I agree with some of what you said. But there's another demographic of people who don't own a Push 1 or a Push 2. So, to see all of what it does would be helpful. But he did explain why he wouldn't cover that in particular and I get it. Just a bit bored with seeing everyone cover the same topics regarding the Push 2.
@iameam
@iameam 8 лет назад
I hear ya. You should watch previous recorded videos that go over the melodic aspect of Push 1. Those are all over the web.

Andri Søren Your right! It’s not you and what you did, it just seems like that for me with some songs Some songs sound just good the way is was made with no alterations. I’m on your side, I’m a dj too and I get crazy creative. sorry. By the way I’m looking into using push At the moment I’m into MASHINE studio
@AndriSoren
@AndriSoren 4 года назад
Jay Borrero no worries at all! I assumed you meant something like that. I’ve learned to try and “assume the best” rather than “assume the worst” on the Internet - so easy to have misunderstandings. I also agree - and I suppose this video was more to show general techniques as well as ways of taking inspiration from the acoustic instrument world. So all good brother - take care, and enjoy maschine! 🙏🏻
