I've had this mixer for 8 years stopped djing for the last 6 years but just now learning what I can do with after getting back into djing shows again. This was a great demonstration of how to use this. I never used to even touch the remix deck this makes me wanna have fun with it.
I've had the S8 for 8-9 years and it still has more creative possibilities then most Dj's equipment. You can probably get one for like $350 nowadays. I recommend it.@@djmcdazur
Another way I use the remix decks live. I do 1 shot vocal stabs I chop out of tracks and accapellas and vocal loops. that way I can do remixes and mashups of tracks live on the fly and set sounds different every time. I have a lot of fun with that. Especially bringing old classics back like renegade master and pump up the jam etc.
I just experimented with that today. Accapella of the vocal of my next song with filtered delay so you didn’t actually hear the words but more of the vibe of the melody, as I got closer to the transition, let up on the filter so the words started coming through. Loved it. Gonna try more of it.
Interesting and useful video: just mapped my Akai APC Mini to play sequences. Not so easy at the beginning, but very challenging and satisfying once you succeed!
Just picked up the Traktor Kontrol S5 from my Tax return it's quite the upgrade from my Numark Mixtrack 2, These videos are quite helpful in learning my controller. I'm loving the onboard screens that I can just close the Laptop and just play right on the controller
I am not a pro and have little experience, i am happy i found all the ways you are showing to play the remix deck, it's a great comfirmation i am going the right direction, i didn't know this fighter twist can do sequencer, omg, i also could had 2 more ways to use the remix deck....thank you so much!
As a producer I got this controller to allow me to goof around, in a way I wished it had even more goofy around stuff. As tool should never style the performer but the visa versa, but hey it's a DJ controller (6 years later)
Great video again Ian and DJTT team! This demonstration helped get my inspiration flowing and I think I have dreamed up a few tangent ideas that you seemingly overlooked (maybe you decided they weren't worth mentioning). Including, but not limited to: 1 - a grid of one shot synth samples (gotta make sure you have ones premade for the correct Key) for soloing on the fly (A "Mad Zach Sound Pack Lite" if you will) 2 - acapella loops of recognizable choruses or repetetive house vox loops to augment the song or really help glue together a transition 3 - dropping in an acapella to usher out one song into a new song (on the fly mashups in general) 4 - use a loop of another song to acheive the same effect^^^ 4.5 - (Continuing from the idea above) Creating a new build up to the drop for the next song. I imagine the heavily filtered and oh-so recognizable intro from Daft Punk's "One More Time". 5 - personalized, yet playable, DJ intro. A sweep, a couple vox samples, a couple other wierd sounds and another outro sweep to play as soon as the song starts. 5.5 - a similar breakdown for ending a set or transitioning between different genres/tempos. I will make a video in the next couple days to demonstrate what I am thinking of :) Awesome post again! Please keep'em coming!!
Long time no see, and I noticed you have a new haircut. In another note, I see you still educating your audience the right way, like always. This is awesome!!!
congratulations !!!! always I like to watch all ur new videos and soon i will get my traktor s8 Im still saving money!!!!! greetings from ca usa my friend!!!
I got mine today :0) Excitement. I will start setting up my loops. I can already see doing pretty cool stuff with this grown-up toy. Started mixing in 1990 (never cared for CDJ's btw, to me they're a bastard transitional phase from vinyl to truly digital, an adaptation that lasted way too long). I remember when Traktor came out, being told that "digital" would never catch on.. I was like "WTF" of course it will ;0)
can you recommend the f1 besides a midi fighter twister? do you own a twister, too? because maybe i want to buy a f1 for my deck C while i have my decks A and B controlled by my reloop beatmix (2-channel jogwheel-controller) and deck D by my midi fighter twister... but i don't know, if it's really needed, if i have the twister... thanks in advance for your detailed answer!
I use the remix deck live in every Set if live set or DJ Set together with The complet kollektion. Okay live into tracks from Pads till Hooks! Native Instruments are for me the best
@George- to record loops or the full song to the remix deck first play the song on deck A or B which u wanna extract the loop, loop it 4, 8, 16 or 32 as you wish, then press shift on your remix deck and capture, then select the deck from where the loop or song will come from (CA or CB / DA or DB) C and D are the remix decks in where you wanna record the loops. thus select which pad you wanna drop your loop or full song.
I use the remix decks for mixtape intro. In the beginning of my mixes for about three minutes it's called crazy edits. I use vocal stems and 4 second loops. Dj Will Vargas on Mix Cloud April Mix. For example.
Thanks for uploading the info. .For the oldskoolers out there embracing the technology, it would have been nice if you could have shown some vocal samples working in the remix decks for a live set.
lol, I've had my s8 for like 4 months now and use it every single day. How did I never see that there was a capture button? I guess I get too into my own groove and never explored what else this controller can do.
I've been using the S5 since it came out, and although it's missing the faders and a few other features. The only issue I'm having, is applying effects independently to STEMS/Remix Decks. I've had a difficult time finding any info on the S5 online. Any suggestions? BTW, The Midi Fighter Twister will be my next purchase. I think that's going to make a really nice addition to my portable setup!
Remi decks are super creative. I like it a lot especially to make a continuity in the mix. I think that it's wird feature but it's works very well. I'm opinion has more sense with loop samples than the shot samples...
retroFuture it all depends on what the sample is i guess, i have remix sets of both, one shots to add into the loops for a more diverse sound then just the same loop, and other sounds for one shots like vocals and what not.
Hi been catching up on all your video's and was just wondering is that MIDI Fighter Twister ok to use with RekordBox as i use two cdjs and a djm850 via midi.
A cool setup would be a synthesizer on one Deck and the remix on another one. so two tracks (A and B) to mix and one remix deck and one Synthesizer deck (Hardware-synthesizer)
If you create your own stems, why wouldn’t you use remix deck, you would be creating all original music, I don’t care about remixing “hit tracks” I care about originals and so should you! Out there in the either! Great video! And don’t limit yourself to thinking you have to use a stem for drums, a stem for bass, a stem for sample, a stem for synth, infinite possibilities
Great tips on how to use remix decks, the only concern I have is when layering a low kick underneath, wouldn't you have to match it to the key of the track? Thoughts on this??
Can we see some examples with different genre's Ean? Not just with this video, but a lot of DJ Techtools videos seem to centre about fairly minimal techno type stuff. We understand that your sound has progressed since your earlier videos, but it would be good to see some other music making an appearance, even from the other guys of the Techtools crew.
thanks :) just got my s8, loving it. however, creativity is something inborn, fluid and subjective. The processes shown here are nice, but you can bet your sweet ass everybody will follow them so religiously that they become common place. I will to, but id like to think that i can wring more out of these technological offerings. Here we go and a toast to experimentation :)
Im not an S8 hater but I wouldn't choose this hardware if I had only 1 option. Would be fun to have the S8 at home or some private party and It would take some time to learn it also. Most probably in a club you will end up playing on Cdj's. But definitely has alot of options and features like never before and it's worth a try. I would recommend this if you got some extra cash... I rather stick to the jogwheel and the classic pitch fader.
But you can do all this Stuff with Maschine. Except Recording and looping with Remix Decks. But can also be done with a much larger Setup (Allen & Heath xone 92 & Focusrite Saffire Pro 40) & Maschine (or with any Setup including a second Output and a second interface).
Thanks for the vid!! What is unique about the midi controller fighter twister thing? Is it the fact that each button also has the rotary aspect so you can change the volume of each part? Or is there something I'm missing?
the unique thing to the midi fighter twister is, that it has its own step sequenzer built in, which syncs up to traktor, that means you can sequenze a whole drumkit without even touching any button (once the rythm plays). additionally you got it right, that you can change the trigger volume of each step and sound. furthermore you can hold these 2 middle buttons right and left on the sides to get up to 4 pages of 16 pressable encoders, so there you can map own stuff like fx and let the sequenzer play while using these pages! so you got 2 basic ideas in one little controller, for me it's just an awesome controller besides my 2 channel jogwheel-controller (reloop beatmix) I recommend it without any drawbacks!
DJ TechTools I can see this working with deep house and tech house and any other minimalistic house. But what about tracks that are already full? such as electro?
i play electro as well and what i love to do is find the tracks that have no vocals or any vocal builds, or even a simple build that seems to be lacking and add my own sounds, find some cool vocal track, chop it up and get a good 4 beat vocal and loop it (everybody everybody everybody everybody every every every every everybody make it bounce [for example]. Another thing that i love doing is adding a kick build or snare build, most tracks have them but if you have any rhythm or drumming experience then you could pull of a kick or snare roll. Your possibilities are endless if you think about what your options are. A little secret i'll give you is instead of loading an acapella onto a deck and play it along side your other track, do what Ian said and move it to the remix deck, load it there and play it from there, chop it up by the section and you can play what ever part of a songs vocals wherever you want, great for mashups. If you play any hip hop or trap and know that producers put in snaps claps and vocals like "hey - hey - hey -hey", add those samples to the remix decks and taadaa!
I see what you are saying, not everyone DJ's tech house and techno. And correct me if I am misinterperating your question, but the pros of demonstrating with house tracks on the minimal side of the spectrum allow for the viewer to hear and differentiate the application of the software, samples, effects, and techniques better than say, Dubstep or Big Room. But I agree that a proliferation of the genres used in the demonstrations in general would be useful and appreciated. Maybe even help DJTT appeal to an even larger audience. Good insight :)
***** Thats the point bro. I am a cross genre DJ and i need something that suits every genre. It would be very interesting to see some Turntables plugged into that thing or the standalone mixer section with cdj's and turntables :)
I don't see why that couldn't be the subject of another DJTT video- they have plenty of gear. *cough* IAN *cough* ;) It sounds like you are a multi-format DJ as well? I think a hybrid turntable set up with the S8 could open a lot of doors to new creative possibilities- especially with the additions of remix decks on the controller. Side note: OMG a nice person with constructive comments on RU-vid?!?!?! :D
i feel the reason he used house to demonstrate this is because of houses simplicity and structure. You can loop a 4/4 anything and get it to sound good with house, so why not experiment with a genre that is simple to explain vs. a track with sounds on off beats, that requires song knowledge and understanding/practice, which is more personal. But i totally understand your question, which i believe he should have touched on and said something like what i just explained to avoid these kinds of questions.
Still don't have pass on S8. Still on S4 with two F1. I thing it's way more flexible than an S8. Can u give us your feedback about it ? I mean, u are using it. on the S8, u can only have access to 4 sample at a time. So for life performance, it's quite complex to remix live, using a lot of sample. Till the time, it's a beat, a snare, a drum.. finger in the noise. but when it's loops, beats, accapellas, break downs, effect, ambiance, and when u have to control all of it it's becoming complex with the S8.. I think
I have been reading about its possible handle the Remix Decks with any MIDI controller. So, is it possible control the Remix Decks with an Akai MPD 24 or 26? Why not?
QUESTION: If I do a live performance on a remix deck within the S8, will it record into another remix deck so that it can save?? Can I do that live without Menu screen surfing? (Meaning: Going through multiple folders in the men to pull this off)
Ok my problem is that it is very difficult to control the tracks in the remix deck, I know where and why to use them, but they keep playing or cutting without me having full control over them. So, I basically do this beautiful undertone of whatever I want, now, I want to move on to the other part, these things are still lighting up or have gone on a loop without me hacing set them up ...
I get my first D2 last week and i have a couple questions.. 1-i cant loop my samples, but i can some of them, why? I want to use only triggering my remix deck loop samples, but i have problems with that,i couldnt find why,any help?
Randon Clyne but beatport is really expensive if you look on tracks (djshop.de has it a lot cheaper...) and i can imagine that loopmasters or something like that has also good stuff for remix decks, maybe a bit cheaper... actually idk, but beatport is expensive at least with tracks.
there are sites that have remix decks made professionally, which isnt very difficult to do but theres also sights like loopmasters that often has free ones, im pretty sure the traktor forums has an entire section dedicated to user made remix sets. But I feel the best way to get drum sounds into remix sets is to get a DAW like ableton and make your own remix sets, that way you have the ability to adjust anything you dont particularly like about a downloaded remix deck.
I have a problem where if i put anything in a remix deck all the samples play at the same time. If i try a drum beat like in this video kick, snare and the bass would play at the same time
+LectroSoul first activate them by activate it on the remix deck like a normal song (pressing the round 1 or 2 knob), aditionaly you have to specify at the f1 wich slot you like to use the effect by pressing shift and turn on or off the 4 buttons on the fx row (on the 4 x 4 field the 2nd row (described on the right and left border of the 4x4 field))
