I differ in my opinion. There are credit cards for bad credit like CapitalOne, Aqua, Marbles, etc. Also fintech banks like Monzo, Starling, Kroo, etc. All of them can help to kickstart your credit file. I have started like this and now I have finished my credit journey in UK with a Barclay's mortgage, and a Barclaycard Rewards Credit Card. I don't have anything more to achieve on my credit file. I now have 6 credit cards including Aqua, Nationwide, Virgin Money, Tymit, American Express and Barclays. All this done in 3.5 to 4 years. I came in 2019 and now I have my own home and all these credit cards with 50k credit limit. There is no need to ever go with the older/bigger names in banking if you don't need them. The fintechs will serve just as well or even better in some cases than the 'thaapaanakal'. For example: Which older bank gives above 4% interest on your current account amount? None. Hi Anu, you can't always use American Express cards everywhere for example some petrol stations. Probably best to apply for a card in a bank you already have an account with.

You can increase your credit limit up to 250 GBP if you submit your income details within first 6 months (payslips or bank statements). Most probably you might received a mail from Barclays for this process. Then bank will monitor your credit card activities and based on that after 6 months you can request to raise your credit limit if you need.
