Hello #Phil Drabble Many thanks for your tutorial. I removed the U2 chip from my CREE U5 led light and now it works without strobo, just switch on and off.
If you have the U7 version with the outer ring light and main light, I discovered a fix for the strobe and low power settings. Also wiring colours. The strobe fix may work on the U5 too, as looking at the circuit board, this part of the circuit is identical. First the easy bit, connect yellow wire to negative, red wire to positive causes main led to illuminate, black wire to positive switches on the outer ring of leds and an internal red led. The mod I have found will reset the main led to full power every time it is switched on, as long as it has been off for at least one second. If you remove and reapply power rapidly, the mode will change to low power then strobe as previously. In normal use on a bike, dip to main beam interval should typically be more that a second and therefore not an issue. This is achieved by removing the small surface mounted capacitor located immediately above the IC labelled U2. This capacitor has a label that is possibly C4, but on my unit the printing is chopped off at the edge of the circuit board. I used a soldering iron to remove the capacitor, but ripping it off with a pliers would be equally as effective! To get into the light housing, mark one of the wires running externally to the outer led ring, then cut them both to allow the aluminium bezel to be unscrewed. Once modded and proven to work, replace bezel and solder wires back together, not forgetting to insulate them from one another and the casing.
Mel Lewis , I tried what you said but didn't work. after removing chip U2 the led ring stop working but the 3 mode were still working so, I remove capacitor c4 and nothing happened. Any other idea?
This isn't the version with an LED ring. I did try to adapt one with the LED ring but gave up because the ring stopped working by simply taking the head off (don't knw why). I can only suggest that you look at some other videos - There are a few different board layouts and orientations - some have chips with what appears to be V2 legends. Also check that the chip is completely removed with no short circuits at the feet. - Hope that helps
@MikaelFredr nope, I just discarded it and used the heat sink and reolace the whole CB with a 10watt LED,though im thinking using a 20watt with same size instead but cant find it.20wath COB LED wont fit.
fatto modifica sui miei: adesso il faro non funziona più. Cioè, adesso che ho tolto U2 il faro fa esclusivamente luce molto bassa. In pratica è talmente bassa che non si può usare.
I fixed it to work just beam. you have to connect the U1 chip bottom row rear right pin to transistor Q last pin all the way to the right. It must work only high beam.
