When Vietnam came along, I was the son of a barber and a waitress in Montana. I was a damn fortunate son to have the parents I had, but not so fortunate when it came to Selective Service classification. I was 1A and was selected to serve. I was fortunate not to be injured or killed. Many weren't. All gave some, some gave all. This is the most important song CCR ever performed.

My Husband was an ONLY son, had a wife, and baby, still had to go! He was 18, Didn't want to go, went AWOL every chance he could, he was a devout Christian, and wanted no part of killing, or war! He ended up as an Honorable E4! Kept getting busted down. Had more Article 13's than Carter had pills! He was escorted to Vietnam in handcuffs, upon arrival, he was told, "Run now you coward, where you gonna go!", I don't agree with forcing people into combat! I never will! I saw what it did to him mentally, and physically! And our entire family! War is hell on the home front too! and after 51 years, it finally took him! He passed on Valentines day, 2017! Complications of Agent Orange. Shout out to my Alpha bros, A co 1/501 101st Airborne Infantry, 68-69, Geronimo!

This video made me cry. Made me remember the hills we were ordered to take and did take, and then were ordered to give them back to Charley. Was hard to take then and even harder now. I still remember the faces. I remember Richard Nixon saying he had a secret plan to get us out of there. Of course, it was all a lie. The one thing they cannot take from me, by God, is that I can say that I was once an officer in the United States 1st Cavalry and I am damn proud of it. Sure I made mistakes and they still haunt me today. We were given a shitty job to fight a shitty war in a shitty place, but we did our job to the extent we were allowed. All Vietnam vets know that we weren't there to fight for our country or mom or apple pie. We fought for our buddies standing next to us.

I was an officer in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and much of what you say is definitely true. It was largely due to piss poor leadership on the part of General Westmoreland. Things began to change some after General Abrams took over, but we were fighting a war that should have been fought by the Arvn. The stupidity of the conduct of the war from 65 until Westy left was criminal and he was rewarded for his incompetence. We lacked a thought out plan and didn't pay attention to history. Nixon was dealt a terrible hand from LBJ and his yoyos. I appreciate your passion and comments. It was a terrible example of "leadership" at the highest level.

I totally agree. If your daddy wasn't rich or you weren't enroll in college... pack your bags your next stop is Vietnam. John F. wrote a very powerful song that gave voice to many men who served and died there. Sad times, but we were given many great tunes,by talented artists. Bless the "Baby Boomers" 1946-1961. Thanks for the down load, the song gives the images life. Bless those who served and die. I thank you!

My dad was the only son in his family and the last to carry on our last name. He didn't have to go but voluntarily left Marietta College in southern Ohio to join the Army and go to Nam in 1966. He now suffers from many ailments caused by agent orange but says he has no regrets. As a field medic, he had many of his friends die in his arms. He's a lot stronger man then I. I don't know how he lives with those memories every single day. God Bless All You Nam Vets.

Never will forget living in Hinesville, GA where Fort Stewart is located. When some of the soldiers came back from Vietnam there was a block party downtown and I was just a kid around 10. I was roaming around meeting and talking to the soldiers and brother I tell you that they were so happy to be welcomed home. One of them gave me some coins from Vietnam that I still have in my coin collection. What a treat, wonder how much they are worth after all this time? Wouldn't sell them anyway.

@EmeraldJEM710 Thanks, from a Vietnam vet. Your comment applies correctly to many Vietnam vets. I was fortunate to come home to a small Montana town, where I was given the best welcome I could ask for. People shook my hand, thanked me, and offered to buy me a beer. Many were Korea or WWII vets. I am not a hero. I did what was required of me.

John Fogerty sang about not being a "Fortunate Son", but actually he was. He joined the Army Reserves to avoid the draft and was and still is one of the biggest critics of war. I love his music and I think he is one of the greatest composers and singers to come out of the 60's. I hated to see the band breakup, but I have to wonder what his position would have been had he gotten orders to go. Yes, I served. 11B2P

I heard John Fogarty and CCR rehearsing "Fortunate Son" at Clinton's millennial celebration in D.C. just after I'd seen, for the first time, Bruce Welge's name on the Vietnam Memorial. It was a transformative experience for an already politicized, from viewing Davis's Academy Award winning documentary, "Hearts and Minds," at the University of Florida in 1979, dissident activist.

oneyetiger guess you dont know your history, Nixon a republican committed some pretty shitty deeds in that war.., It wasn’t about party, it was about a corrupt money making military industrial complex, lobbying ALL members of house and senate and Nixon was president from 68-74, the worst years of the war. I lived thru that era. Your rightwing shallow patriotism rings hollow in post Vietnam America (Reagan Iran/contra lies, daddy Bush iraq war, baby bush Iraq war fiasco of lies, and now the world of trump lies and corruption and traitorous Russian money whore weasel deeds) War is a corrupt military industrial complex money scam pulled on the American people just like privatized prison judicial system. Eisenhower warmed America on his last day in office that America’s biggest threat to our democracy was the military industrial complex. History has proved him right. 9/11 was a false flag lie conducted by Cheney and his neo-con Israeli double agents along with Israeli mussoud who wired the towers for demo, Cheney and Israel lied us into war with Iraq (israel to get rid of Saddam, Cheney to steal Iraq’s oil and to establish his goal of a perpetual privatized war (Halliburton, blackwater, and other secret privatized military money making organizations)... It’s the gop that do t give a shit about Americans, or the world, immoral, greed and nothing but money whore puppet weasels to anyone or anything that will serve their authoritarian autocratic plutocracy agenda. FDR represented the democrat leader that stood up for the average working American (social security, workers rights, decent wages, etc) and American values. Reagan represented the republican leader that stood up for corporate greed and power (trickle down) at the expense of the average working American and placed Wall Street above Main Street.., 80s mantra “greed is good”... shifted our “public” treasury away from the public (American people) and into the hands of private military contractors that raided our treasury and started the deficit form of government. 1776-1980 deficit $800 billion 1980-1988 deficit $4.75 trillion And trickle down has been in effect ever since. All the while cutting away at public services (infrastructure, social security, healthcare, education, and other government responsibilities to maintaining a first world society), Instead using our public treasury to line the pockets of Wall Street power brokers at the expense of the America people future. Reagan started the campaign to destroy public education, the 21st century is all about technologies and sciences which require education to complete in a 21st century globalized world. Republicans want a nation of lowly educated religious nuts because ignorant people are easier to manipulate. I have traveled many countries and the average American is an idiot about the world we live in today
