Creek fishing Australia with lures 

I lost a ginormous flathead at my feet due to a shonky leader, snapped about a quarter way down my leader when I had the fish at my feet. Watched it swim away in complete disbelief. I’m paranoid as fk now lol

Hi Mate, if that's the case where you know it's a dangerous zone I'd step up to heavier gear. Also you can cast closer so you've got a better angle on the fish when you hook up (less line horizontal in the water to get wrapped around stuff, especially if it's shallow). I also go super hard on them if I know it's a decent fish in a bad zone, try and smoke them up to the surface before they can get you in the reef. But to answer if I loosen off or lock up I think I'm usually locked and when they get me in the reef I don't have much time to loosen, but I have done at times if it feels like it's just sitting there and might swim back out giving them some loose line can definitely help. Try and get different angle on em too, you can sometimes pull slightly different angle and they pop out. But yeah if you can go a bit heavier with the gear and try and avoid the reef altogether definitely the best approach I reckon!
