8:44 I think the term you’re looking for is “convergent evolution”. Essentially, it’s when organisms develop similar traits in response to similar selection pressures, i.e. lighter bones to allow for flight in both birds and bats. In terms of humanoid aliens, they’d probably have to be descended from simian analogies to have a similar body shape. Even then, depending on the exact conditions on the plant, their anatomy could be wildly different.
@AGrumpyPanda
@AGrumpyPanda 6 лет назад
When you think about it, the circumstances to arrive at a roughly humanoid shape aren't that out there, the main criteria being a circumstance that favours endurance walking over short distance sprinting.
@shae98sc2
@shae98sc2 6 лет назад
@@AGrumpyPanda I would raise the point that humanity descends from simians that primarily lived in trees, hence why we don't have a quadrupedal gait. I would also raise the point that a quadruped is more suited to endurance, due to weight distribution being split between 4 points instead of 2, as well as having a lower center of gravity. However, given our ancestors' preferred hunting methods (i.e. running down prey after using a bow or spear to injure the prey) I would concede that humans do have some serious endurance. Whether that's because of our rather unique ability to sweat, or because of adaptations picked up after we left the trees, is beyond what we can verify without submitting research papers. As far as humanoid aliens go, the ability to sweat would be a surprisingly important gauge of "humanoid-ness".

I personally always enjoyed the stories of ancient, hidden histories and civilizations that Lovecraft did much more. Rats in the walls, the Temple, those sorts of stories. The ones where you are made to question if what you know of humanity is accurate in the least as you begin discovering these hidden secrets. Stories like Colors out of Space are fine. unfathomable cosmic horror that makes humanity look like little more than bacteria, but I LOVE the stories that involve humanity, because the idea of the things in our history just being plain wrong and hiding some nightmare from the ancient past is just too perfect. I think it works really well when there is that element of the outer god mythos stuff, like in Shadow over Innsmouth. I'm always much more affected by those stories over the distant writhing chaos on the other side of the universe.

One of things I want to recommend to anyone who is going to use Lovecraftian elements to their campaign is don't skimp on the adjectives. Do precisely what Lovecraft did and use ridiculous words en masse. Eldritch, undulating, pulsating, throbbing. All of those words that make you shiver and feel uncomfortable. I described the creature my party last week fighting as "vaguely humanoid, with multiple limbs stretching and reaching out from its emaciated body of writhing faces sunken into its flesh. Their mouths and eyes constantly shifting in silent screams of agony." One of my players genuinely looked grossed out. Use that on your players. Use the uncanny valley and creepy descriptions to really set the tone. I''m running a campaign set on a magitech/steampunk Earth that I am putting multiple Lovecraft story references into. Primarily, the big story arc is that the Gith and Illithid are going to descend on the Earth like a massive alien invasion. There are rumours and stories about the creation of the dinosaurs, and how "The Old Ones" created the Dinosaurs as a precursor to all of the mortal races. The Old Ones are, mistakenly, thoughts to be far gone, but also different from the Illithid. The big reveal is going to be that the Illithid and the Old Ones are in this case, one and the same. Last week I used The Colour out of Space as a template for the party. This is a morally ambiguous campaign (leaning towards evil) where the party was contacted by the thieves' guild of Amazon City to investigate a meteor that crashed into a large farm out to the east.
@Bluecho4

I would advise most DMs to use descriptors for monsters, of all kinds (Lovecraftian or no), that are visceral and evocative and unsettling. Don't default to clinical descriptions - or, Yog forbid, giving the actual names of the monsters - because these make the beasties easy to categorize in the minds of players. And if the monster can be categorized, understood, it becomes less frightening. Even something as "innocuous" as a zombie can be unsettling, if you don't default to "it's a zombie" or "it's a walking corpse", then in the players' minds the creature could be anything. Moreover, focus not only upon visual cues, but of sounds and smells. "A shuffling figure, with joints that creak and spasm rigidly, that ambles forward without breath and reeks of putrescence. Heavy shadows hide eyes - or perhaps not - in recessed sockets. It shuffles towards you."

After accidentally watching Cthulhu and Aboleth episodes back to back I realized these two are like missing pieces to the puzzle of the other, and that gives a high level path of understanding and unlocking the power behind the hardest challenge in my Campaign of over 35 years, the coven of true dragons that run 1/2 the world that are really a company of pit fiends imprisoned in the planet with the patron demon of mankind (and Cthulu, unbeknownst). Even the Gods do not know the history of this planet, it is a feature of their cosmos that predates them, but the aboleth do. They actually worship Cthulhu, and are his only window to the universe. Their pantheon of celestials is just a screen. They'll have to be more powerful than the outer planes to defeat Cthulhu, but at least I finally have my end game, lol. Many thanks for this happy coincidence, I saw it coming only 1/2 way thru the first vid ;) The future of Batugrond, aka Batagren, the center of the heavens, where the Gods resolve their differences only remotely, if it has one, thanks to you immensely. It really is the most awesome place for any sylvan, fey, elf, half elf, oriental , or wood elf, be they wild or civilized. The sylvan cultures from around the galaxy come here in their afterlives, for the object lesson of how life could have been if they were all united as one and free, as in the world and in the heavens. On Bategron, there is no other survival strategy, it's all, or none. The Heavens intervene on this magic thick planet as often as they can to build advantage. Very large portals to the 8 main outer planes each form satellites of Battaegrun, the innermost is called Sun. Heaven and Hell are in the sky where one can see them during half their orbits. You can see them clearly against the background stars moving slowly to the North, especially when they turn in the sky and the astrologers all go crazy arguing about where they will stop. This is why Earthlings think the Earth is flat and the Sun goes around Earth. An almost flat horizon and the Baeteugroon centered universe is a deep racial memory. I'm finally sure I'm not joking when I say Cthulhu is driving this monstrosity. And the aboleth are the only key to even knowing he's there, or where this regime in the heavens, or on Bategrun itself, even came from? or what makes it all tick? much less why we wander the galaxy visiting other planes? Not even Mordenkainen nor even the Thendar know. Yuck, I don't want to play aboleth nor Cthulhu, but they have to be the keys :( Thank you immensely, I probably just forgot, but w/out you it would have stayed that way. Sure hope I can find a way to save the players from ever finding the aboleth, cuz I hates me some mind flayers and psionics pretty fierce. But what has got to be done, must be done. re: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ywkRYjgb5R8.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qYBMHMc3ywg.html

One of my favorite Mythos monsters is Robert Bloch's "Star Vampire". These creatures travel the stars to drink blood. They are invisible, but the blood they drink isn't. So, if you were to see someone get attacked, here's what you'd see. First, there would be the sound of giggling that seems to come from all directions. Then, the victim is raised into the air, screaming and flailing against an unknown assailant. Suddenly, fountains of blood erupt all over the victim's body, twisting into crimson ribbons that eventually meet at a fixed point that slowly takes the shape of a gaping maw. As the blood flows out of the victim, he shrivels into a twisted, mummified husk, which is carelessly tossed by tentacles seemingly formed from his own fluids into the central chasm. As the mouth closes around him, teeth crunch into his disfigured corpse, with bits of him sticking to what appear to be an endless array of fangs. Finally, its meal complete, the creature launches itself into the sky, filling the space around it with gleeful laughter.

If you're going to run a DnD 5e campaign that heavily features Lovecraftian monsters and themes, you would not be ill-served by including the optional Sanity ability score, from the DMG. So you can actually go making Sanity checks (or more likely Sanity saving throws) whenever you encounter a cosmic horror, or something that was never meant to be. I guarantee, the players are more likely to approach such things with more trepidation, if even seeing something like an undead creature, or a gibbering mouther, or a mind flayer, caused them to roll to keep from losing their composure or even from going temporarily insane.

My next campaign will involve vampires trying to connect their homeworld to the PC'S world to create a hunting preserve, and a cult trying to get Hastur, the yellow king, out of carcosa.

I've been secretly tweaking my Curse of Strahd campaign to include Lovecraftian mythos, so even Strahd himself may be revealed to be nothing more than a mosquito on the arm of much stranger, more powerful beings.

So a few things always did kind of bug me about the Lovecraft mythos in these sorts of modern games. Though granted, I'm not quite as immersed and knowledgeable in them as things like D&D lore. In no particular order... - A lot of the alien creatures honestly seem pretty similar. You guys mentioned that these aren't just "rubber forehead" aliens with human anatomy save for a few funny extra features. But instead of two arms, two legs, etc. you just have some wings, a bunch of tentacles, multiple eyes/mouths, etc. Truly *alien* aliens are great! Though it's annoying when they all look horrifically inhuman in more or less the same sorts of ways. - The aliens are *ALWAYS* malevolent and hostile. Which really seems like a very... "human" perspective. "This thing is mysterious and unfamiliar, so it must have hostile intent". Which, sure, makes sense if you take into consideration the perspective Lovecraft had, where anyone or anything that wasn't a white upper class person of 'good English breeding' was wicked and degenerate, or any sort of progress even as simple as indoor air conditioning was clearly sinister (yes, there is literally a Lovecraft story about that), but now just seems boring and simplistic. The comparison is often made of them being to us what we are to animals, seemingly with the assumption that every human is the sort of psychopath who gleefully tortures squirrels and other critters and is completely indifferent at best or at worst relishes in their suffering. Honestly I would find it far more fascinating if there was more variation, like our relationship with the animal kingdom. What if there were incomprehensible Lovecraftian aliens... who were the equivalent to Jains or Buddhists or other groups that actively go out of their way to try to avoid harming """lesser""" (big quotes there) beings? Or even entities who are the equivalent to militant eco-activists, actively seeking to defend """lesser""" species against the more malevolent forces of the universe, but who just do so in ways that we tiny humans can't always understand. - Almost all of these incomprehensible alien civilizations... turn out to be pretty simplistically monolithic. This kind of ties back into the above issue. Like with the mind-swapping aliens you talked about. Are there none of them who have different (if perhaps still bizarre) ethics and philosophies then their kin, who think maliciously stealing bodies fits into their (perhaps still alien) ideas of 'wrong'? Are there no Deep Ones who reject Dagon and Cthulhu and perhaps help humans (without some 'double edged sword' situation) in exchange for shelter or maybe even companionship (since they do seem to like interbreeding with humans). Again, it all comes back to seeming like a very limited and human perspective of "this other group of people are very different, which means they must all be different from us in the same degenerate way".

I’ve always thought that the mythos is weird for making it seem that earth and humans are utterly irrelevant in the grand scope of the universe but then focuses dozens of stories on the earth and humans. We can’t be irrelevant but have literally everything very heavily interact with us and our planet in various ways all the time. I also have a problem with the fact that half of the things in the mythos are just shapeless masses of flesh. It gets a little boring when you can expect exactly what the thing is that you encounter.

How does the psychological effect happen, I can understand being horrified about a 15 foot spaghetti meatball monster but if you are an adventurer why would that break your mind? Is it magic?
@TheBkchicken
@TheBkchicken 6 лет назад
It's kinda like a mix of magic, raw power that just gives them an aura that causes insanity and the breaking of the mind, and 'holy mother fucking jesus I just saw a 100 foot tall monster made of flesh open a mouth bigger then I am, spat out someone who I think was my mom. Cut her in half. The halves regrew into deformed versions of my father. Then melted into cosmic goo and I'm going to go cry and hope to god this is a dream.' Also the mind breaking insanity usually happens because the people that see these eldritch horrors and survive are just normal humans like me and you and in reality. If we saw these things and came under their magical and just plain weird gaze. We would freak out if not go insane on the spot. The old gods aren't meant to be fought by the amaizing heros who have slain dragons and monster and wizards and can kill a man by looking at him. Sometimes you have to accept that's how the game works if you want to meld 2 games together. By all means just have reskinned and renamed monsters in your dnd games. But if you want to have a real lovecraftian horror game. Then the monster's either need to fuck with your heros minds because they are just that unfathomable. Or have your 'heroes' be normal ish people.
@TheBkchicken
@TheBkchicken 6 лет назад
And I'll also note. That it's hard to grasp just how weird and scary these things are while we play our RPGs. I mean for example, you can look at a picture of a lion, be told how scary and strong and vicous they are, and just be like 'alright so?' But as soon as that person is placed in a cage with a lion. They are shitting themselves and running and crying and begging to be let out. Same for our heroes. We might say 'why would my lv 16 barbarian who has punched a dragon be scared of this weird fish guy with a tentacle face named cthulu' but in reality. He would be scared and going insane or st least not going to be the same when hes done the fight

@@TheBkchicken Thanks for the clarification. I'll have to get some more experience DMing to run this kind of monster as they seem pretty complex. I don't know too much about the Cthulhu TTRPG but from what I have seen the characters seem to be more normal than a group of adventurers in my typical games. I'm running Curse of Strahd which I'm sure will give me plenty of practice in making psychological horror actually scary instead of saying "roll a wisdom saving throw, you are frightened."
@TheBkchicken
@TheBkchicken 6 лет назад
@@Meteor2022 no problem. In the actual call of cuthulu TTRPG your character is just a normal dude (because that's how it is in every cuthulu mythos story. Regular people) and they have a stat that is specifically dedicated to sanity. Whenever the character experiences something truly terrifying they have to make a sanity check. If they fail sometimes your sanity is reduced, making it harder to succeed in future sanity checks and something from a random chart of bad things can happen to them. Anywhere from 'you are shaking from a terrible horrible nightmare you had last night for 1d3 hours take a minor penalty to certain stats.' For scary but not necessarily dangerous scenes (blood dripping from the ceiling and goo all over the basement kinda thing) all the way to permanent mental issues like 'whenever you face a terrifying situation, like a women being sacrificed in front of your eyes with monsters standing around or seeing a elder god rip apart your companion in front of your eyes kinda thing. You enter a catatonic state for 4 hours, you cannot move talk or react to anything.' These kinda character breaking permanent effects usually only happen if your PC has an incredibly low sanity (CoC Call of Cuthulu uses a percentile die system, higher your stat the better it is. 80 in shooting is about 80% success rate 20 is 20% ect.) Like 10 or 15 in that sanity stat and they face cuthulu himself (or whatever horrors you dictate are enough to permanently mess with a character, gods are just a good example) but they are very possible and do happen.

@@Meteor2022 Another pretty common element of Lovecraftian horror/insanity is that people aren't just going insane from fear, but from understanding. They begin to grasp and understand things that are both horrible and just plain too much for a human mind to comprehend. The stress of learning truths that are both awful and impossible to process breaks them.
