CREEPSHOW (1982) MOVIE REACTION! FIRST TIME WATCHING! Check out this first time watching horror reaction video for Creepshow, and see if I can make it as a horror movie rookie. Horror is a genre I've barely explored, mostly because I'm a huge wuss. Typically my Halloween movie viewings consist of Hocus Pocus and Halloweentown. This year I decided to expand my horror movie knowledge and try and watch these horror movie fan favourites.

The special makeup effects for Creepshow were all done by makeup effects master Tom Savini, Jen. He appears at the end of Creepshow as the garbageman with the mustache. Savini worked with George Romero on several projects, including Creepshow, Knightriders, Dawn of the Dead, Day of The Dead, and Monkey Shines. He also did the effects work for Friday the 13th and Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, as well as Maniac, The Burning, and The Prowler. Savini also directed the Night of the Living Dead remake.

Fact: originally Tales From The Dark Side was originally developed as Creepshow the series, but they lost the rights to use that title.

I saw this at the theater and by far, the biggest reaction was the "They're Creeping up on You" segment. The format was just like several horror comics that I grew up reading. For the time, the effects were considered way ahead of the curve. Splendid casting, twisted tales, gross but not overdone. A true classic that I'm glad to watch you review Jen.

Everything in Creepshow is all practical effects, Jen. There were no CGI effects in Creepshow.

@@44excalibur Yeah, but that was a computer graphic in the movie, wasn't it? I don't know if I'd count that as a special effect in the sense that we usually think of them. Then again, I guess that would still be a visual effect -- it's not like it rendered itself.

Thanks for watching this. "The Crate" is my favourite segment. The creature has affectionately been named "Fluffy" throughout the years. It's supposed to be a Yeti/Sasquatch I believe.

@@MrCageCat my theory is he was asleep or hibernating because that’s the only way that makes sense and I think the reason he prefers to stay in the crate/under the stairs is because he probably lived in a small cave when they found him

Jen, if you pay attention you'll notice that the green marble ashtray that Bedelia used to kill her father shows up in each of the Creepshow segments. The ashtray is in Jordy Verill's dream where he's visiting the doctor, and the ashtray is on the doctor's desk; the ashtray is also on Richard's night table in Something To Tide You Over; it's on Henry's desk in The Crate; and it's a soapdish used by Upson Pratt in They're Creeping Up On You.

@@ReelReviewsWithJen I will second that emotion; "Forbidden Planet" is in the holy trinity of absolute top echelon, one-of-a-kind sci-fi movies with spectacular, groundbreaking, dazzling special visual (and sound!) effects, with a great, almost-profound story. (the other two movies in the "trinity" would be "2001: A Space Odyssey" and "Close Encounters Of The Third Kind".) There are two reactions for "Forbidden Planet" currently, both were blown away. HIGHLY recommend it. My Mom saw this was on TV and made sure I knew to catch it. (Looks to the sky): Thanks, Mom. :)

@44excalibur after he made Airplane, a reporter asked him what he thought about playing against type. He said that he was playing against type before. He was always a naturally funny guy. I worked with a guy who knew him and he said that he would give people whoopie cushions as gifts.

And his character in _Day of the Animals_ is a _lot_ like his role in _Creepshow,_ only ultimately much more physically violent as the nasty creep grows increasingly unhinged by the same phenomenon that's making the local wildlife berserk.

Before Airplane Leslie Nielsen was actually known for playing the bad guy. He even played assassins from time to time. Truly a gifted actor.

This movie is very underrated. I like how it is basically an nod to old 1950s horror comics. My Mom said this movie scared the crap out of her as a kid. "Meteor Shit" is probably my favorite line in the movie. I also just love older movies like this because there is no CGI and it's all done practically

That tilted angle is called a Dutch angle, Jen, also known as Dutch tilt, canted angle, or oblique angle. It's a type of camera shot which involves setting the camera at an angle on its roll axis so that the shot is composed with vertical lines at an angle to the side of the frame, or so that the horizon line of the shot is not parallel with the bottom of the camera frame. It was first used extensively during the German expressionist movement in cinema.

I'm glad you finally got to Creepshow, Jen! 😀 Creepshow is based on the old EC Comics from the 1950s like Tales From The Crypt, The Vault of Horror, and The Haunt of Fear. Due to a book by by Dr. Fredric Wertham called "The Seduction of the Innocent," which accused comic books of promoting juvenile delinquency, there was a conservative backlash against comic books regarding their content, resulting in the Comics Code to be enforced, and EC Comics was put out of business. Stephen King and George Romero created Creepshow as an homage to the EC horror comics of the 1950s.

Horror based comic books like this were very popular back in the early 50's until a psychiatrist named Fredrick Werham published a book call the "Seduction of Inocence" in which he claimed that comics were directly responsible for a rise in juvenile delinquency, which lead to the development of the comic code authority, which resulted in censorship of comics and pretty much the end of horror comics. The belief that horror comics lead to juvenile delinquency is what motives the fathers reaction to his son reading the comic.

Horror comics were short morality or karmic tales similar to Creepshow. The usual stories were about victims returning from the dead to exact revenge!

Most people only recognise Neilsen from naked gun, airplane, but before those he was a serious actor, he usually played a romantic lead, or a villain, he was even in the classic forbidden planet, the airplane films rejuvenated his carreer

Oh wow, I've been waiting for this. It's my absolute favorite movie and has been for decades. It has the perfect blend of horror/suspense/comedy, and it doesn't take itself very seriously (except when it wants to scare you) I have a bunch of little bits of trivia I've found about the movie but I'll just give one per segment. Opening - The kid in the beginning was played by Stephen King's son. At one point during filming he took him to McDonalds, and had him made up with bruises and a black eye, and someone called the cops on him for child abuse. Father's Day - The marble ashtray used to kill the father shows up in all of the other segments. Jordy Verrill - Yup, that's Stephen King. And the only other characters are played by the same guy who plays his father, adding some subtext to his imagination. Something to Tide You Over - The actress who played the wife is Gaylen Ross, who played the female lead in Romero's "Dawn Of The Dead" The Crate - The creature was nicknamed by the SFX folks "Fluffy" Creeping Up On You - The roaches were so expensive that they almost didn't make this segment, but they found the money (went overbudget because of it) and in the final scene they used raisins in place of some of the roaches to make it look like there were much more in the room. Epilogue - The garbageman with the mustache is none other than Tom Savini, the legendary SFX artist, who did the SFX for this movie. So glad you've done this movie, and I hate to keep repeating myself, but your choices in horror movies have been great! If you haven't seen them yet, I'd recommend a couple of Romero's other movies - "Day Of The Dead" and "Martin". Have a good Halloween!

This may be the best comic book movie, ever. When I was a kid, I thought that the thing in the crate was the horror version of the Tasmanian Devil.

Tales from the Crypt was also an anthology movie back in the early 70's. I believe it might have been the first anthology movie, also there was Trilogy of Terror which seems to be the most well known anthology movie of that time period. Tales of the Crypt movie seems to be forgotten for some reason.

Oddly enough, Leslie Nielson was ONLY known for dramatic parts until 1980 when Airplane hit.. they hired him because he was such a straight arrow actor.. the juxtaposition was funny to those who grew up seeing him in movies. It gave him a whole new career. Also, Ted Danson was maybe in season 2 of Cheers at this point.. hed be a household name by 84.

Ted Danson explained in an interview the brief shot of his character drowning underwater: "So they make a little aquarium tank. I got in a wetsuit and climbed in, and somebody would reach down with an oxygen tank ventilator thingy, and I'd breathe, and then they'd take that out. And there was a yoke made out of... I don't know, wood and fake sand, so it looked like my head was buried in the sand, underwater."

Anthology horror films like “Creepshow” were once quite common, particularly in the 1960s and ‘70s. Examples would include: “Tales of Terror” (1962); “Twice Told Tales (1963); “Black Sabbath” (1963); “Tales From The Crypt” (1972), not to be confused with the 1990s “Tales From The Crypt” TV-series; “Vault of Horror” (1973); “From Beyond The Grave” (1974); “Trilogy of Terror” (1975); “Dead of Night” (1977); “Cat’s Eye” (1985). But there have been more such films made in recent years, perhaps most notably “V/H/S” (2012) and “V/H/S 2” (2013), which crosses anthology horror with the “found footage” genre.

Leslie Nielsen started out as a dramatic actor in the first part of his career. After it lagged, his career was revived by "Airplane!" and he built a reputation as a comedic actor ever since.

This is a film, that when I was 14, I paid to see another movie, at the multi-cinema, and when to see Creepshow. I had the Comic-adaptation too. Years later, when my first nephew started to read Stephen King's books, I told Jack how I went to see Creepshow, at his same age. He told me that I'm a "cool Uncle". My nephew is also impressed that I got Stephen King's autograph (Night Shift), when he came to a local Ohio university, in 1981 on a lecture tour. My brother, who also read King, allowed his adolescent son to read certain novels. I gave "Creepshow" to my nephew as his 14th Birthday present. However, I can not "hold my breath, for a long time"... ;)

"Creepshow"actually got an anthology TV series that came out a few years back, still running. Just finished the third season, I think. Fun fact, the kid in the wraparound story is Joe Hill, son of Stephen King(and he wrote a few of the "Creepshow"episodes).Several episodes of the series reference the original movies(the marble ashtray is hidden in every segment, for example)and at one point, they bring up a crate found at the bottom of a quarry, and theres a book by Upson Pratt. Even had Adrienne Barbeau(Billy)in the first episode. Jen:"I don't like bugs." Me:"Then this will NOT be a pleasant experience for you!" You just won yourself a subscriber!

Also, a few other horror anthologies to check out: "Tales From The Crypt" and "Vault Of Horror" (both 1970s British films inspired by the EC Comics of the same name). "Tales From The Darkside: The Movie" (1990) "Tales From The Hood" (I think 1995). And the grandaddy of all anthology films "Dead Of Night" (1945 British film). Only some of the segments are horror-ish.

Leslie Nielsen was more recognized as a serious actor from the 1950s-1970s. His comedy "career" started with Airplane! in 1980, 25 years into his actual acting career. And since you seem to have a strong aversion to insects, you should add "Joe's Apartment" (1996) and "The Nest" (1988) to your list of films to react to.

Fun fact : The film was primarily shot on location in Pittsburgh and its suburbs, including Monroeville, where Romero leased an old boys academy (Penn Hall) to build extensive sets for the film. That could explain why George Romero used Tom Atkins and Tom Savini, both local boys.

The space weeds in any wide shot during "Jordy Verrill" are part of a glass painting or matte painting, which were used extensively throughout the movie. (Leslie Nielsen's house? Not real.)

Creepshow is Stephen King's homage to the Tales from the Crypt comics (and all the other EC horror comics). The comic series started when he was 3 years old. I suspect he started reading them too young and that explains a lot :)

Each of the stories in Creepshow are based on short stories published by Stephen King, except for one. Father's Day was an original story written by Stephen King specifically for the movie. The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verill, The Crate, Something To Tide You Over, and They're Creeping Up On You are all based on short stories by Stephen King that were published in various magazines over the years.

I thought "The Crate" was the only short story that had been published at the time. The others, if they were written, were not published, as I remember. I was a Stephen King fanatic, had every book (including "Night Shift") and would hunt down short stories that were published ("The Monkey", for instance, came in a pamphlet that came in a Penthouse or Hustler magazine, if I remember correctly!). When I went into that movie, "The Crate" was the only story I was aware of.

@@TTM9691 Well, from what I understand, the other stories in Creepshow were short stories written by King that were published under different titles in various magazines. For example, ‘The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill' was originally published as ‘Weeds' when it was first written. I don't know what the other titles were, but I do know that Father's Day is the only Creepshow segment that was written specifically for the movie. I was surprised because I wasn't aware that there were any Stephen King short stories out there that didn't make it into Night Shift or Skeleton Crew.

Leslie Nielsen was always known as a dramatic actor, until Naked Gun made him a comedy star late in his career. You should see his role in Day of the Animals. His fave movie was the ahead-of-its-time classic Forbidden Planet. an inspiration for Star Trek. Nielsen is the starship commander.

I really loved this reaction. I am a huge Romero and Savini fan. A lot of this movie was filmed in and around Monroeville and Pittsburgh, PA. very close to me. One of my art instructors, Rick Catizone, was the animator for this movie.

Below another commenter told you that Creepshow is based off of EC comics from the 1950's which were forced to end before Congress stepped in. There was an EC comic that continues to this day: Mad Magazine. Mad started in comic book size and was originally called Panic. Mad ceased news stand distribution in 2018 but, is still available via subscription and direct market sales (comic book shops). Also - the cockroaches were very real. They were collected in South America in bat caves. How they were collected was by digging a hole, placing a large trash can with a liner in the hole and making the cave dark. When the lights were turned back on the bag would be full of roaches! They continued this process until they had all that they needed. Tom Savini did the special effects for Creepshow. If you watched/watched Friday the 13th, Dawn of the Dead (original), The Prowler, etc you'll see more of his work. :)

Ray Mendez, an entomologist with the American Museum of Natural History, and David Brody provided 20,000 cockroaches for the segment "They're Creeping Up on You". In the final scene of the segment-in which the room is almost filled with cockroaches-many of the apparent insects were actually nuts and raisins.

Fun fact: they rented a hundred thousand real cockroaches at 50 cents each.They were the most expensive props lol. If ya like George A. Romero and Stephen King working together you'll LOVE The Dark Half, one of the most faithful adaptions of King's novels.

Billy was played by Joe Hill, Stephen King's son. Hill grew up to be a writer as well, and among other things, he's the curator of a line of horror comics published by DC Comics called Hill House Comics. At the time the movie was released they also put out a comic book adaptation of it. So it was a comic that was based on a movie that was an homage to comics. Horror was a very popular genre in comics, but as parents began freaking out about horror comics (and comics in general), the publishers created the Comics Code Authority, which laid out a bunch of rules about what could and couldn't appear in comics. Horror comics stuck around for a long time after that, but htey were defanged and considerably more tame than the classic EC horror comics had been. Horror comics are still popular, but not anywhere near the levels they were in the 1950s. (Though that's true of comics in general.)

Jen, did you notice that the father who yelled at his son for reading the Creepshow comic was Tom Atkins, who appeared in The Fog? He's also appeared in other John Carpenter projects like Escape From New York and Halloween III: Season of the Witch.

King's son, Joel King (oen name Joel Hill), plays the kid. Some of his stories have been adapted to the television show (the animated special about the zombie circus, the story about the lake monster, among others). King stories are in the television show also (the fungus man beer story, the animated story about the man who ate himself).

Even though most Stephen King stories are set in Maine, George Romero prefers to film in and near his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he filmed Night of the Living Dead. Most of the film was shot in an empty all-girls school located outside Greensburg, Pennsylvania. The school was converted into a film studio, and the episodes "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill" and "They're Creeping Up on You", as well as the prologue and epilogue, were filmed in their entirety at the former school. Filming took place at the Greensburg location throughout 1981. In "The Crate," most of the interior and exterior shots for the university sequences were filmed at Carnegie-Mellon University(Romero is a Carnegie-Mellon University alumnus), with Margaret Morrison Hall serving as Amberson Hall. The backyard party was filmed in Romero's own backyard at his former residence on Amberson Avenue in Shadyside, Pennsylvania. "Father's Day" was filmed on location at a mansion in the Pittsburgh suburb of Fox Chapel, Pennsylvania. "Something to Tide You Over" was filmed on location at Island Beach State Park, Berkeley Township, New Jersey.

Glad you liked it....In addition to 'Creepshow 2', you should check out 'Tales From The Darkside:The Movie' it is done in a similar format as Creepshow 1 & 2 as well as has stories from George Romero and Stephen King (and it also has Debra Harry - lead singer of Blondie, in one of her early acting roles). That is what many fans call the unofficial Creepshow 3.... (also I'd avoid the other Creepshow 3 - since Stephen King, George Romero and anyone else that worked on Creepshow 1 & 2 had nothing to do with 3, it super low budget, it doesn't follow the same format, the stories are not good at all in my opinion as well as the effect are bad - not in the good way, they look very cheap, which I'm not surprised with since it was a direct-to-video release)...

"The Raft" from Creepshow 2 is my favourite of the Creepshow short movies. I rented Creepshow 2 when I was about six or seven years old, the guy who ran the grocery store with a VHS rental section at the back didn't care what age you were as long as you paid and returned them on time! lol I also rented a bunch of Friday the 13th movies, Ghoulies and Ghoulies II, Dolls etc. If you want more modern anthology movies you could check out V/H/S (2012) and Trick 'r Treat (2007).

Five of the best horror shorts, ever. I have a hard time complaining about other anthologies (CAT'S EYE or CREEPSHOW 2) because, well, I can't imagine five segments ever topping these five. Which is fine. Two or three would be nice... sigh... EG Marshall (bugs) and Vivica Lindfors (birthday cake) were well-done investments to make this an instant classic, I thought as classic film actors themselves. Adrienne Bahboom (er, Barbeau) hadn't played such a miserable female before but she fit SO well. And Hal Holbrook had been a servicable TV and supporting cast member for a couple of decades until he was issuing follow-the-money directions in ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN and then as the fed-up corrupt police leader in MAGNUM FORCE. I thought this segment THE CRATE was a top-notch addition - what a grand performance.

Fun Fact: Actor Ed Harris appeared in Creepshow because he'd previously appeared in an earlier George Romero film called Nightriders, about a group of Renaissance fair workers who put on medieval jousting performances on motorcycles instead of horses.

Tom Savini the special make up effects artist who worked on this and Ed Harris were both in another George Romero movie from the 80s called Knightriders. One of the few good non horror films Romero wrote and directed.

I liked the dirty harry Easter egg in the third story during the scene the guy ( Henry) fantasize shooting his wife dead, the actor who plays Henry was actually in a dirty harry film and the gun he in the fantasy scene is actually the same gun dirty harry uses in his films (the dirty harry franchise). overall I enjoyed the reaction to one of my favorite horror movies,it was awesome and I appreciate it so thank you!

I absolutely friggin' *love* this movie. At a time when Hollywood...and any amateur filmmaker who could scrape together a couple hundred bucks...kept choking movie audiences on a seemingly unending glut of slasher movies, it took the combined efforts of George Romero and Stephen King to give us something truly unique by paying homage to EC's horror comics of the 1950s!

Creepshow wasn't an actual horror comic, but it's based on the old EC magazines (Tales From the Crypt, Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, etc.) of the day. The entire movie is like reading through of one of those issues, cover to cover. :) Oh, and ... "Meteor shit!"

There was a comic book adaptation of Creepshow and they actually used the text spoken by the "host" you see in the film at the transition to the next story in the comic book itself. There were sequels but they were all half hearted cash grabs that do not approach anywhere near the original.

From what I remember reading back in the 80s they were trying to turn Creepshow into a TV series but as with most things the rights were held by another company and it evolved into Tales from the Darkside. I used to watch it, Monsters and Friday the 13th the series (which has nothing to do with the movies or Jason) every weekend as a kid

The art done inbetween stories was partly done by Bernie Wrightson and Jack Kamen who were both artists for the original EC comics. Tha little boy Billy in the prologue and ending was played by Stephen King's son.

Dr Terror's House of Horrors was one of the first short story compilation horror films. I think it is still worth watching today and was one of the first horror films I ever saw.

There wasn't an actual CREEPSHOW comic book this was based on, but as a tie-in to the movie they did adapt all 5 stories in illustrated format. It wasn't a comic on newsprint but a sort of magazine with thick glossy pages. I used to have it but my mom looked inside it one day and threw it out - ironic... There was a CREEPSHOW 2 and a CREEPSHOW 3. The second movie is based on 3 short stories by King, with the screenplay co-written by Romero. The third movie has nothing to do with either King or Romero and apparently is terrible (never seen it). A few years after making this movie, Romero created the TV show TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE, which aired in syndication throughout the '80s, usually at odd hours like 11:30 at night or Saturday afternoons. This was supposed to be a CREEPSHOW series but he had some problems with the rights to that name. Later on there was a TALES FROM THE DARKSIDE movie with Deborah Harry from the 1980s band Blondie as the host, which was weird. Currently there is an actual CREEPSHOW TV series airing on the horror-themed streaming service Shudder, in its third season at the moment. The skeleton creature is called the Creep. He's the host of the comic and meant to be King's own version of real comic book "horror hosts" like the Crypt-Keeper, the Old Witch, and Cain and Abel. In later movies he talks.

One of my favorites ever! 8:56 - we even get a Beatles reference, oh my god, I wish I could press "Like" ten times, lol. 4:00 - I met Vivica Lindfors a few times, an amazing acting teacher and a larger than life personality, not unlike the way she is in this movie! Seeing her in movies, especially during this time, was pretty rare. 4:50 - My favorite laugh from you ever!!!!! I love how you're enjoying this movie!!! I knew you would! 6:50: That's Dick Cavett's wife, Carrie Nye! :D Can you believe this only the second reaction to this I know of?!!! And this was not an obscure movie, a Stephen King/George Romero collaboration, very 80's. I saw this in the movies and loved it. This was at the absolute height of Stephen King, every single book was being read by seemingly everyone, plus you had the high profile movies of "Carrie" and "The Shining". I was devouring all his books at the time, so I was psyched. They had a great, glossy comic book of the movie put out for promotion, and I had read the entire thing, so I actually knew all the stories going in.....but the movie definitely delivered! GREAT reaction to one of my favorite horror movies! THANK YOU, JEN!!!! :D

I saw a "How it was made" about "Creepshow" and the point I found crazy was that they actually used a good many actual roaches for htat one episode, and the Animal Rights Folk had people on the set ensuring every roach was accounted for before and after every scene they were in - and yes they did this by hand counting the number of live roaches used before and after the scenes...

This anthology film is based on EC Comics of the 1950s like 'Tales From the Crypt' and 'Vault of Horror' as well as Warren Comics of the 1960s like 'Creepy' and 'Eerie'. The anthology horror film is a sub-genre of horror. Many productions by Amicus, the competitor to Brit horror studio Hammer, were anthology films. There is an excellent sequel called 'Creepshow 2'. The Crate story from this movie terrified me as a kid! I had to flee the room and yank open a window to gasp for air when I first saw it! Lol. It doesn't bother me now but something about it triggered me back then. For more Leslie Nielsen served up straight, check out the science fiction classic "Forbidden Planet". Another horror suggestion: "The Ruins"

Creepshow was filmed just a few months before Ted Danson debuted in his first season of Cheers. So unlike Leslie Nielsen, he was still relatively unknown at this time. So he’ll always be typecast as “Harry” to me, and not Sam Malone.

So, Leslie Nielsen actually spent most of his career in dramatic roles. He and the others who were in Airplane! were cast specifically because their ability to tell the jokes with a straight face enhanced the comedy. Also, there are two sequels to Creep show, although Creepshow 3 isn't very good. There is another movie in a similar vein called Tales From the Dark Side that is a better Creepshow 3, and was worked on by many of the same people. Lastly, Creepshow is not affiliated with Tales From the Crypt, but they were both printed around the same time, arguably in the golden age of horror comics.
