Ah, the classic "villian offers you the chance to join forces which is totally not going to end up with you getting punished for it" ending.

I really like how the game doesn't end as soon as you kill the final boss. You get one last opportunity to explore the world and say goodbye before the ending & credits. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough but more games should do that.

Did you know that in the original Dragon Quest there was an oversight? In the original game, after you save the princess, instead of returning to the castle and leaving the princess there, you could go directly to the final boss and fight it with the princess in your arms (since you save your game in the castle, it means that you have to go through the game without saving, which is doable because this game is short). And in the remake, instead of fixing it, the developers made it a feature. If you went to the final boss with the princess, there was some aditional conversation with the final boss, saying something like "thank you for bringing the princess all the way here!"

Funny thing about that deal with the Dragonlord, in Dragon Quest Builders 1, it's shown that all the Hero got was a tower called "half of the world".

Fake choices like this are the reason I don’t think DQ’s heroes are actually mute, everybody just keeps ignoring them.

One of the coolest things about Dragon Quest's bad ending is that it is used for the basis of the spin off Dragon Quest Builders, which takes place in an apocalyptic version of this game's world and even ends up having you take on the fallen hero from the first game.

I love how the dragonlord goes "really?" As if he wasn't expecting this and is excited for you to join him

in Build you are once again offered to join the Dragonlord (after defeating his first phase). If you accept, he puts you in a shallow grave

I want to know what goes through a programmer's head when they give the player a "yes" or "no" question that forces you to pick a certain one. It's a remarkably good way of making yourself look lazy as hell.

There are a LOT of tributes and parodies based off the "half the world" scene in manga and japanese videogames. In fact, the later DQ spin-offs that feature Dragonlord as a major character portray him as someone who manipulates humans with offers too good to be true. On a side note, if you wish to see what happens after DQ2, Dragon Quest Monsters Caravan Heart is a spin-off with a fan translation takes place in that universe. It's also a prequel to DQ7, because travelling between worlds is weird.

Fun fact (but also spoilers) about Dragon Quest Builders: When the hero said yes to the Dark Lords deal, he just ended up getting a small castle named “Half of the World.” Upon realizing this, the hero ended up going crazy and remained there while the Dark Lord took over. You even fight him as a boss in the final world!

Another freeze frame bad ending i used to be terrified of is the unbeatable run in Gauntlet for nes, how the screen turned black and white and i think thats the only time the entire game over theme plays in the whole game...

So this is what Dragon Quest I was like. I only played the later entries and spin-offs. Still I can say, in a few ways, this game was still ahead of its time with its post final boss exploration and optional princess saving.

Speaking of towns not being safe in RPGs, I’m imagining a town where the townsfolk are aggressive due to the monsters and stuff and attack you, and in the sequel it’s all peaceful, but a few crazy ones want the old ways to return, and will sometimes ambush you.

Have you ever played Escaped Chasm? It's a small ,free, PC rpg-ish game created by one of the people who did some of the artwork for Undertale, but I promise you that you will not hate this game at all. There are four endings, one is good and the others... You'll see. And after you've completed that game and all it's endings, then you should play it's sequel (kind of) Dweller's Empty Path, which also has a few endings. Some of them are good, some are bad, and some are just...you didn't collect everything and you just get a boring end screen when you go to sleep.
