Source: Promotional Spider-Man (2002) CD-Rom found in Kellogg's brand cereal
Date: 2002
The Kellogg Company, doing business as Kellogg's, is an American multinational food manufacturing company headquartered in Battle Creek, Michigan, United States. (Wikipedia)
This screensaver included in CD-Roms found in specially marked boxes of Kellogg's cereal is quite ominous. The screensaver starts with a loading icon in the middle of the screen, then a spider web appears. The user interacts with the web by hovering their cursor over it, causing it to ripple. The cursor then becomes trapped in the web and a spider reveals itself from the darkness, pouncing on the cursor. The screen then glitches out, showing a message saying 'The experience begins on the web.' A logo for the film Spider-Man (2002) appears.

Note: I think this may be an early attempt at 'viral marketing', due to the fact that it doesn't designate that it's an advertisement for the film until the very end and the 'Share with a friend' option is featured prominently throughout, enticing the user to spread the word about this upcoming film. Very odd piece of marketing, it clashes with the film's lighthearted and warm tone.

It’s certainly ominous but it kind of fits that early 2000’s vibe the original marketing seemed to have in the beginning. My mind goes to the ShoWest teaser. Similarly dark, slightly eerie tone that doesn’t quite work with the final product. Given that this film was following the likes of Blade and X-Men, it would make sense for marketers to try an emulate those franchises, especially if they weren’t familiar with what the finished product was going to actually look and feel like.

Oh, yeah. Of course! It also has that Matrix-y, techy feel that a lot of early 2000's stuff had.

@@RaimiSpiderManVideoArchive Excellent point. The Matrix basically dominated film culture at the time. I mean, the soundtrack to that movie is peppered into a number of advertisements for this movie alone.

Seems interesting as marketing,like the first Spider-Man teaser poster no text except an image

Ah, the memories! I remember playing around with this screen saver when I was younger. Thank you so much for uploading this, bud! It's also interesting to see an alternate Spider-Man movie symbol (1:05).

There was a WinAmp skin for the 2002 movie and also I think a 3D screen saver of some sorts(? the CD-ROM has it i think.

Can you imagine if this was the early teaser trailer in 2001?

This is absolutely bizarre. I assume the pointer is a fake-out, like a pre rendered animation rather than actual user interaction?

i'm pretty sure it\s your pointer that gets stuck from the web

That seems to be the case. Once your cursor is stuck to the web, you are still able to control it but your movement is limited.

pretty cool, but yeah, this does feel more ultimate spidey than raimi spidey.. beyond x-men and blade being what they were, im not sure why this is what they went with in the marketing early on. though somewhere in between that "welcome to the third space" ps two ad sony is also responsible for, and the fact nu metal was a thing, i can only asume it was a dark time indeed.. also uh, some school shottings happened? and something about some twin towers falling? shit maybe wasn't very emotionally stable at all...

Fair enough. I also think Sam Raimi being a horror director was potentially influential as well. I mean you have the guy who made “The Evil Dead” and “Darkman”, which is more Universal horror monster than superhero, directing a movie about a man who becomes a spider, and depending on the time, he might be wearing this red and black suit with black eyes... yeah you could be forgiven for making something like this.
@brandonspain12345

@@kyeholmes994 The red and black Alex Ross suit was designed before Sam Raimi became the director in late 2000. At the time, Sony was pushing for a "Matrix inspired" look for Spider-Man, Green Goblin, and Doc Ock who was in early drafts. Eventually Raimi came in and wanted a lot of changes from the script that was previously written, leading to it's planned Fall 2001 release date to May 2002 instead. Doc Ock was pushed for the sequel to focus on the father/son themes and because he was a hardcore fan of the original comics, he didn't want kids to grow up with an edgy Spider-Man redesign and wanted the suit to be the classic red and blue one that he grew up with.
