I have been thinking about how to keep my shop neat and organized and I had a friend on social media share with me some pictures of how he organized his tools. So the french cleat adjustable wall organizer was born into my brain and into my shop.Also, there are several videos right here on RU-vid where you can see all sorts of cool ideas with french cleats. Check out Johnny over at Crafted Workshop here: • French Cleat Tool Stor...
I would like to thank PureBond plywood for sponsoring this project and video. Please be sure to check them out here: purebondplywood... . PureBond is exclusively sold at Home Depot and made in the United States!
The tool holders that I built for this project are awesome and if you have any questions about them, please leave a comment below or send me a message and I would be happy to answer. I didnt go into much detail about them as everyone has different tastes on how to organize their tools. This is what worked for me and how my work flows through my shop.

Excellent build mate, i like the French Cleats myself and have been meaning to do one myself, but like you life gets in the way, pity you couldn't do any PDF plans on those holders?. Excellent again and well done. Barry (ENG)

I don't think a lot of people realize how amazing this is. There's like a million french cleat tutorial out there. But out of this build I get extraordinary tips that I have never seen before. First of all the drill station is really well thought, secondly, the scrap piece on the TS fence to serve as a feather board and keep the piece flat on the table is brilliant, and then adding glue to the screws to increase their strength and also serve as lube when going in is also really good!. Thanks for sharing! I saved the video, shared it with two friends, liked it and of course subscribed! great content!

Nice job thanks for sharing it. I tried for months at 2 different Home Depot’s and couldnt get any of that plywood. I finally called the pro desk and they said they had it right along. I ordered for curbside pickup and got 3 sheets of the Pure Bond Poplar 3/4”.. Got them home and they look great. Have a project in mind of a lathe cart from Fix This Build That here on RU-vid and cant wait to start it. Hope it works as you commented. Once again thanks for posting the video

Glad you were able to get some! It’s a great product and cheaper than hardwood dealer priced plywood. I just paid $160 for a 3/4” sheet of walnut ply. 😳 ALSO check out Jay Bates lathe cart that he built. He does great work.

I’m just getting started woodworking, for like a few months. I’m not very mechanically inclined, impatient, and can’t even read a tape measure to more specificity than 1/4”. I’ve got so much clutter in my wood shop that my clutter has its own clutter. So, building anything was a nightmare and extremely slow going, because I can’t ever find anything! Cleat walls are very attractive space savers and help keep everything visible and at close to eye level. I started working on putting a system together, but the wall has pretty much taken up my time for the last several months. I don’t have a solid wall, only bare studs, because, well plywood is expensive. I tried to come up with something to go all the way across in cutting cleats out of 1/2” ply long enough that they stretch across several studs, but I’m finding how unstable they only reason I haven’t taken it all down and started over, is the lack of space foe everything and all the waste of plywood. However, just like most of my projects, I think I’m going to HAVE to start over completely, because I’m wasting more money trying to keep everything stable, than I would if I just broke down and put sheets up, with cleats already on them, like you’ve done. I really enjoy your step-by-step tutorials and wish I would’ve found your channel months ago. Thanks a for the videos on cleats & holders. I’m just very concerned with using only glue, and part of my issue is trying to nail/screw everything. If I have to re-fashion a holder, I have to pull nails out and fight with it. It’s a pain! Anyway. Thanks again!
@CReevesMakes
@CReevesMakes 4 года назад
Thanks Lucy! So, you are putting 1/2” plywood on the bare studs and it’s still unstable? That should tighten everything up if the studs are secured properly. I use 1/2” plywood for the back and then 3/4” for all the cleats. I have used mostly glue and Brad nails. I have had zero issues with glue failing. Hit me up via email and send me some pictures. Creevesmakes@gmail.com
@lucyswannsunsafespace7313
@lucyswannsunsafespace7313 4 года назад
CReeves Makes 1/2” cleats were put up, but the sheets of plywood were cheapest they had and there was no “backing” besides the wall, but studs are 2” deep, so the wall can’t support the cleats, only the studs. I put up 1/4” plywood, with 1/2” cleats yesterday, and it seems very sturdy, I’ve just got to go back the square one on the few holders I’ve built, I guess, because they’re not fitting the best either. Still no stability. I’m using 1/2” cleats on the holder backs too, so they’re the same size as the wall cleat. We’ll see with new holders if I can stabilize. I’m thinking I may have put too many trim nails or something in them. No clue. But the most logical solution is honestly to just start over, instead of trying to “salvage” lol

So all the junk you had piled up got tossed, to be replaced by a wall of Rigid tools.

I sorted it all out and put it into carry totes and yes then I put up the tools on the cleat wall

Comparing pegboards to french cleats is not fair. Having said that, I am going for French cleats. Cool video. Thanks a bunch

Really dig the setup brotha. I like that you customized the board for your needs, yet kept it simple enough to be conceptualized for shops with other tool brands, or a hodge podge of different brands and it still look clean and organized. Thanks for the share from The Honey-Do Crew in California my man. Keep it up :)

Thank you so much for the compliment! I just know what I want for my shop and try to build it. I am actually going to build another one of these for more tools! Take care and thank you for tuning in!

I have been watching so many videos on tool storage and I have liked the French cleat design but your video made it the easiest and best video. I’m very new to wood working. Could you share some of the plans like on the sand paper holder and skil saw holder etc. I can follow plans. Just not experienced enough to make them or I just doubt myself to much 🤦🏻‍♀️

i did, saw this vid and built it, blue background and all. I've also added a hanging wall 1200mmx1200mm at the end for common hand tools, which adds a lot more cleat space. The hanging wall just sits on gate gudgeons via gate hinge straps. Its a great system and thanks coz I have the garage back. Only problem is with all the tools on the wall, its basically an easy shop for the burglar once they get in the garage. cheers and thanks from NZ.

I started making my French cleat wall today and found your video very helpful. This is the second time that I have used purebond plywood and I find that it is not very router or sander friendly. The top veneer has a tendency of splintering. I like the look of the product, was wondering if you have experienced similar issues. I enjoy your channel and admire your craftsmanship. Thanks

Hey there and congrats on your new French cleat wall! I have noticed while crosscutting the maple, that I get tearing. What I started doing was, marking my line, then running a razor knife over it to score the cut. This will eliminate the tearing in the workpiece side. The waste side will still get some tearing unless you score that as well.
