Time lapse video showing construction of world's first utility scale molten salt power tower project, located in Nevada. With 10 hours of energy storage, the facility generates solar electricity even after the sun has set!
The project is a tremendous success story for U.S. developed technology. The project created over 4,300 direct, indirect and induced jobs, with more than 1,000 construction workers on site during peak construction.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Location: Tonopah, Nevada, USA
Technology: CSP with Molten Salt Thermal Energy Storage
Size: 110 MW facility output
Storage: 10 hours of full load storage, enabling on-demand energy production day and night
Electricity Production: More than 500,000 MW-hours annually
Power Purchaser: 25-year contract with NV Energy
Homes Powered: 75,000 homes during peak demand
KEY PROJECT BENEFITS:
No requirement for natural gas or oil back up - completely emission free
Progresses U.S. clean energy technology with the industry’s most advanced energy storage project
Energy storage provides a firm, reliable electricity product on-demand, day and night
Helps meet growing demand for clean, renewable energy sources
Significantly reduces the use of water for cooling by using an efficient, low-water hybrid cooling system

This almost makes me emotional knowing that this actually came to fruition.

Sorry to break it to you but it doesn't work. Plus it's actually 30 year old technology.

I really enjoyed seeing it at the Vehas 2 Reno race this weekend. Idk if there's any personal attending to the site anymore but I would absolutely love a tour and in depth explanation of what was trying to be achieved.

pretty "cool". pun intended. how do you stop heat loss from the molten salt over such a long period especially when drawing heat for power generation during the night. i can imagine the 1000s of gallons of water turn steam brings down the temp of the reserved molten salt quite a bit along with natural heat loss.

+Allison Miller, when it's stored in the large storage tanks at the base of the tower, we lose only approximately 1% of the energy per day, resulting in 99% energy storage efficiency. That roughly converts to about 10 degrees of the 1000F degree temperature of the salt. The molten salt is an excellent thermal storage medium - and it’s environmentally friendly, non-toxic, and inert. +Costeno Salao is correct, as electricity is needed, molten salt is dispatched from the storage tank through a heat exchanger to create super-heated steam which then powers a conventional steam turbine. The cooled salt is then returned to 550 degree F storage tank, to be re-heated back to 1,050 degrees F. See ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EfUZofkc0Mw.html
