Crested Butte to Aspen Klunker Classic, 1980. Part 2 of 2. See Charley Kelly, Gary Fisher, "Murdoch", the guy who did the belch for Jaba the Hutt, and other mountain biking notables, along with bikes by Ritchey, Breezer, and Arnold Schwinn & Co. A fine look at the state of the art in mountain bikes 30 years ago. Drpaddle is the guy in the Skid-Lid on the desert camouflage Lowell-Knight Procruiser. This was one fine time of high-altitude partying and pedaling with a bunch of creative, fun, and free people.
Per a comment left recently, the film now has attribution. Thanks for the info and honors to the creators!

My bike was a Raleigh clunker we braised some canti brake studs. Put a rear derailleur with the solid axle. Worked as labor in summer all around Colorado and just had fun with friends. Today’s economy would never allow a carefree life like that. Rents are sooooo expensive I don’t know how young people can even get started let alone have time to appreciate their great health and friendships. Thanks for posting so an old man can remember what a great life used to look like.

I just revisited this video today, and thought to myself that rides like this will never happen again; the format, the 'vibe' that was prevalent throughout the weekend, and the technology that was in view back then. Everything and everyone gathered there in that one space and time to experience something truly magical.

"POS" is so relative to the times. In this video, I was riding a really cool, nearly cutting edge Lowell-Knight Procruiser. I bought the frame from the guys in Tiburon, matched it with an off-the-shelf cruiser fork -- Cook Bros maybe? -- and had them sandblasted and painted desert camaflouge along with the rims. It was hot! I bought a Ritchey Mountain Bike a few months later, and I still ride it. It may be primitive even compared to your 02 Trek, but it will never be a POS in my heart.

The crew was Dana, myself and Tapley. Dana did all the editing. I may have a version of this in my archives.

Wow, came across this by accident. Move to C.B. in '79. Did '79 & '80 tours. Great time to be living there,

If you lived there in 79n and 80, I would like to talk to you about identifying others who lived there at that time. I'm writing a book about it.

The one thing the Americans are so good at is developing sports and marketing them that already existed in a small scale around the world no more so than in Britain where kids like us in the fifties took old bikes fitted low ussually single gears and the one 26 inch knobbly tyre that was available then probably developed for cycle speedway in the early post war years and big scrambles bike bars and then we went Tracking as we called it often onthe many bomb sites that existed around our cities then, or often as myself and friends on the down hill tracks of Portsdown hill innocent times and great fun.

@drpaddle... That fork looks like a custom made Koski Trailmaster with a drum brake mount. Those forks were the primary aftermarket fork back then, as I remember. I also remember Gary Fisher passing me about halfway down in '84... he had this SWEET Team Fisher in dark Red, just like Joe Murray's was.

It's cool seeing the pioneers out there like any other local. Steve Potts was the last guy shown, for anyone wondering.

AlpineDave: I think that's another Lowell-Kight Procruiser, based on the small diameter second top tube. My desert-camo one is at 1:34 (I'm wearing the Skid-Lid). The frames came without forks, so I don't know what kind he's running.

I was Dana's camera man for all the shots on top of Pearl Pass. I rode a motorcycle with Tapley Dawson, camped with the bikers and took all the mobile shots from the rugged parts of the trial. Dana met us with his van at the end of the asphalt and shot all the stuff in Aspen. Who found this copy and where are the credits?

You were kind enough to update the artist who created part one of this video as Dana Atchley. Would be great if you could update part two. Or, add the credit roll back to the video. Thanks.

Was there from 88 on till Kay Peterson and crew retired from organising Bike Week - was never the same when the for profit company took over - at least for us - still went though. Kay and her amazing crew of volunteers knew how to throw a "Pedalling Party in Paradise" and I'm forever grateful for the memories created during those years

It's really is amazing the shots they had of what almost looked like a really rocky fire road and it's was "unrideable". Current entry level trail bikes would eat that terrain, just goes to show how offload cycling has come on so much.
