Crestone Peak: Skiing Powder in May on a Colorado 14er

The weather was forecasted to be cloudless and warm but instead we got snow the day before and another skiff as we set off in the morning. I guess it wouldn’t be much of an adventure if things went as forecasted. In this episode Christof and I set off to ski Crestone Peak in the Sangre De Cristo wilderness of Colorado. At 14,294 this peak will be Christof highest to date and the weather isn’t rolling out the carpet for him.

Hey guys, I have a few recommendations for you as a Coloradan. Freeway on the second flatiron of Boulder, super cool easy class 5 scramble, could be done in just a few hours even when being super careful. Dead dog couloir on Torreys Peak, super fun snow climb, awesome steep 50+ degrees ski descent. South-North Arapaho Peak traverse, class 4 Lone Eagle Peak in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, class 4 Shit for brains couloir by Abasin, steep snow. Kieners Route on Longs Peak, 5.4, easy snow I think you guys are perfectly capable of doing any of those unroped, the only exception is a few very exposed sections on Kieners but it really depends on your comfort level and the conditions.

I take complete responsibility for that. At the time I could not figure out why I was moving so slow, although I was dry-heave coughing the whole day. A trip to instacare a few days later finally got me a Pertussis diagnosis (whooping cough, lol) so I can only assume my body was deep in a battle against infection. But I still live with the shame:)

@@cnuila shame? I'd say it's way more admirable to see someone have the brains to know when to turn back and not even caring about summiting for the sake of summiting. Besides, you guys bagged a 14er during like peak snowpack. I'd say that is so much more cool than hiking any ol' 14er. I can only hope to be half as good as you guys within a year or two.

A story to share...Several years ago, I was heading up the trail to climb Mount Missouri. On the way up, there were two men riding horses tugging two body bags. I asked the search and rescue workers what happened. They said, in the Spring, two backcountry skiers hiked up Mount Belford and skied down and were caught in an avalanche and died. Having worked on Vail Mountain for a couple of years, I know the crews that seek and detect vulnerable snow faces are experts. They test areas frequently. Unless you both are experts in detecting potential slides, I’d be very careful of your future adventures. You could end up like the two guys I saw. On a positive note, you guys are animals and I love the channel!

When we attempted Blanca it was worse, and on Memorial Day no less. A French team were doing all three fourteeners - Blanca, Ellingwood, and Little Bear. We bailed - they were trapped on knife ridge between LB and Blanca and had to rapell off. They said it was heavier than the Eiger. Blanca is famous for sudden storms.

Dynafit has their hook system dialed on all their packs. Good eye on the crampons. In my (mediocre) opinion, there's no reason to use anything else until you absolutely need steel. They are incredibly durable and reliable despite their feathery weight.
