"Crete Heat" Styrofoam for a Sub-Base? 40' X 28' Garage Floor Pour

The owner used Crete Heat styrofoam panels under his garage floor to lock in his radiant heat pex tubing.
It seems like a pretty good system for installing pex tubing but I think it can be kind of expensive compared to regular 2" blue board. As prices for everything go up, it's a good idea to compare the two and then make a choice.
We've poured a lot of concrete floors on top of this stuff with no problems. It makes figuring concrete yardage a little more difficult because of all the octagon nobs sticking up. But all in all, it's not too hard to get the amount of concrete needed figured pretty close.

I know nothing about concrete. I dont work in the trade. I have no reason too watch these videos. That being said....I subscribe and watch every one. The wife walks by and says " are you watching that guy pour concrete again?" Yes...yes I am.

Hey Mike, I’m in Ontario Canada and am an HVAC tech. We’ve been using this type of styrofoam for a while now. Easy to lay radiant heat piping and helps with pipes being stepped on.

Lol, we call them dragon eggs, bc dragon concrete used to be famous for them, so doesn’t matter if we use Auburn, Sargent, or whoever, they’re all dragon eggs, I used to love working like that when you could talk about the weekend, hunting fishing, whatever, instead of constant instruction, it’s good to have younger people wanting to learn, and it’s always good to teach, but now we don’t have any that even want to learn, it’s sad, the best we have in the work force right now is 35 plus and I’m being generous by saying that, it’s closer to 40 and older. Another good one Mike, wish I had run into you 35 years ago, I would’ve loved to work with you.

I put these in my basement floor. Havac tech said he has never seen a slab respnd so fast after being turned on. Not sure if these panels were the only reason. They were very easy for me to install and lay the pipe in. Thanks for another great video!

With a slump of 6 and plastic down, she's gonna be a muggy one in there... it'll be a bit before you try throwing the power trowel on but at least you have good time to burn your edges. Good raking but it's pretty much self leveling 😆 Nice pour guys! Do you ever wonder how much Crete we have in our veins do this work over the years? 🤣. Have a Good Day!

Hi Mike -- My new build this next year will have Radiant Heat in the house using Warmboard-S and Warmboard-R wood subfloor panels, and the garage floor will also be radiant heated using that type of styrofoam panel (of which I have researched the different ones offered) -- This video is just what I needed to watch! Thanks again Richard (aka Retired Person) in KY PS: why did the Owner say they did not like the styrofoam panels?

They usually break easily, so just pull them to where there's no concrete yet and bust em up with your foot and spread em.out. you can then notify the batch man. Usually those form from batching to fast. Like making pancake batter but not mixing enough and having pockets of powder not mixed in. Sometimes just mixing the truck at high revs will bust em up as well but that come with its own problems so just toss em aside.

It`s basically how much money the company wants to spend on equipment. Though I`ve seen one of the larger companies stay strictly with rear loaders but some of them are as big as the front loaders.

What dries harder....wet concrete....or less runny? My guess would be the longer the cure time...the harder

Some would argue especially the engineers but I`ve been on jobs that lasted for 4 yrs. and come back by working the opposite side of the road and big breeze ways and patios were still beautiful 3yrs later. So I`m a believer in the quality of the concrete not the slump.

Why is it so watery I’ve heard Ryan from victory concrete say he pours the concrete let’s it level out finishes brooms and wallaa easy money and in this case that’s pretty much all I saw!!!??
