Thanks so much for this collection of photos, it really brought back memories to me. Me and my friends from school travelled to Crewe from Derby quite a few times from 1963 - 1966, and obviously 1963/64 were the best years with a lot of namers still around. We bunked North and South sheds when we could and on one occasion even went around North shed officially! when we were invited to join a party with a permit. Those permits were the Holy Grail to us all. On your photo, the permit states 1964? What happy days, sitting on the north end platforms watching Duchesses (Semi's), Royal Scots, Jubilees, Patriots, and the occasional Western Region locos just pottering about or taking trains out, together with EE Type 4s and all the electric classes - magic.
Wonderful moody images. That brutal winter steam distinguished itself where the diesels had failed conspicuously. Probably the last great year for steam. I am luck to be able to remember the steam railway... just about young(!) enough ... the smell, the sound and the sight.. . Thanks.
