So I finally decided to get back into dual-sport riding on my CRF230F. I've finally reached a point where it's capable of riding after a couple years of slowly fixing problem after freaking problem. I'm feeling confident enough to start taking trips on it again. In this episode I just go on a simple road trip to shake the bike down and reveal any major issues that it still has.
If you enjoyed this content, you'll enjoy Torture Test Magazine even more! torturetestmag...
Torture Test Magazine is an e-magazine which documents, in fine detail, the stories of bikes subjected to a real-world reliability test known as "the torture test." In the magazine, the torture test is conducted on a bike until it mechanically fails so badly that it can no longer run. Why? Because bike reviews based on a few hours of test riding are not satisfying enough. We want to know exactly how reliable a bike is, and how it will eventually fail. Simply put, Torture Test Magazine brings you the world's most detailed reliability and cost of ownership reviews for motorcycles.

I've done thousands of touring miles on a klx250s. Similar mpg. My favorite touring tire combo has been mt21 front, d605 rear. I get about 4000 miles with that combo. The d605 rear is better in rain than the mt21 rear.

Small displacement FTW! Back in 2018 I took my WR250R from Poland to Tajikistan and back. Made almost 25.000 miles. On a long trip like that 60 mpg is a big plus. Apart from that, on a small bike you're not tempted to take a huge pile of useless stuff with you. Only the essentials. Cheers.

Thank you, Frickin Jim, for the huge amount of information you have provided on performance enhancements for the CRF230F. You have done the experimenting and shared the details, allowing the rest of us to save time and money and select the best mods and avoid the others. Most of us that like the 230 also like similar bikes like the XR250, CRF250X, KDX200, etc., and yes, the TT-R125, so we enjoy those videos also. I agree with you about 95% of the time, which is about as much as we could ever expect from two dirt bike riders. We look forward to more from you. Dwight.

LOVED this video--RU-vid recommended it to me and you got an instant sub from me. Been looking at the crf230f as my first dirt bike for next year. Every video I find on it just solidifies the decision for me! And I agree, I don't need a brand new bike right off the lot, I'd rather get one used and see where it needs some attention. Fantastic video!!

Hahaha the Cali intro had me absolutely floored! Also I loved it when that cylinder stud broke loose practically under finger tension. Looking forward to more 230 vids, makes me want an older small-displacement air-cooled bike to go on adventures on again! there's definitely something endearing about the robust, pragmatic simplicity of a little dual sport and both the limited possessions you can travel with because of it along with he ease with which you can fix it.

I love downhills in neutral. We went to the Alps a few years ago and I found that the no engine downhills teach you such a lot about braking points and lines. My 230 would generally keep up with the bigger bikes who were using their engines. Great fun.

Love the video, and agree with much of what you said. I'm probably going with a pair of 230's next. (My wife rides too, an XT250, I ride XR650) In 2017 I bought a brand new TW200 and put 4000 miles on it in a few months. A few 600 mile trips in the midwest, and several 300 mile cruises. Its always funner on two wheels regardless of what bike, but it seems I have the most fun on the smaller ones.

Not bashing the 230, Its an awesome bike, and i own one. But, if you're looking to buy new, you should definitely check out the honda CRF250F. Is basically an upgraded version of the 230, with a bit more power, the same legendary dependability, and some modern improvements like hydraulic disc rear brakes. All this for under 5 grand.

So happy to see you back dual-sporting the 230F!!!! What gearing are you running? I sold my CRF230L and am back in the market for a dual sport. Debating on a plated and lowered DRZ400E, 230F or XT250, but this video is pushing me to go with a plated 230F....when I can find one. The engine and transmission on the 230 is quite amazing. I'd have the 230L pinned for 30 minutes at a time at an indicated 70 running super knobby Pirelli Scorpions and couldn't believe how comfortable it rode. Loving the new channel, but you'll always be Frickin' Jim to me. ; )

I absolutely get it I've got a Harley that I love highway riding it's a freedom of its own especially when I want to ride at pretty moderate speeds. But in saying that there's just a different type of ride when you're on like say my dr650 and cruising back roads that are not as well maintained and then dirt roads and then if I want up on the power lines it's a whole different freedom. But get on any bike anyway that you can and just Cruise God bless everyone rubber side down Sunnyside up May the wind always be in your face.

Awesome video. I have a 230F that I sometimes prefer over my Husky 350 for a lot of the same reasons you mentioned in the video. It's just plain fun to ride...everywhere. Here's some questions. What's gearing were you running. The only time my 230F hits 70 is when I'm towing it on the trailer! How did you pack gear? The 230F has very few options for racks and gear carrying.

@@renerodriguez6300 There's a really big difference between the dr200 and the dr250. The only thing they have in common is two letters and two numbers. The dr250 is a basically a dr350 with a smaller bore, but with the same power.

@@foil666 I own both, CRF230 and XR250R 2002. Down low the 230F is much stronger than than the XR250. However, the XR will eat the 230F for dinner after 5th gear. Real world, the XR250 is about 25 pounds more than the 230F. The 230F is more MX orientated, especially once the suspension has been fixed. Both are excellent bikes. However, the 250XR, is more open fire roads or desert racing. The 230F is more for woods.

Great video, thanks. I am looking at a CRF230F and plan to buy one in the next couple of weeks. Your video answered the one burning question I have left about this bike, fuel mileage/range. Where I live there are 500 miles of ATV trails in the wilderness, but no gas stations out there. I want to go about 100 miles on a tank if possible. There is a loop I can do that is about 80 miles, so that is the shortest range I would need. I'd sure hate to run out of gas in the wilderness because there are not many riders out there sometimes. It seems that worst case scenario would be 75 miles on a tank? That was flat out the whole time right?
@TortureTestMagazine
@TortureTestMagazine 4 года назад
80 miles would be no problem if the trails are easy. Make sure you do measure your consumption and figure out what you're getting, because it will vary wildly based on terrain and your bike setup.
@arniespace
@arniespace 4 года назад
@@TortureTestMagazine Thanks. I would say the trails are pretty easy. I live on the edge of Superior National Forest, there is a trail head a block from my house. Its a 4 million acre forest with no houses or anything in there, except a lot of trees and rocks. Half the trails are fire roads that are not maintained with the exception of clearing trees that fall on the road. This area is glacial, so there are lots of rocks in the soil ranging from small to large. The roads where built in the 50's or earlier, so the rocks are embedded in the road surface everywhere. They are less than two cars wide and very curvy. On a dirt bike you can fly, but you have to be careful not to hit a large rock in a corner or you can be ejected. The other half of the trails are maintained by the local ATV clubs. They are pretty narrow and curvy, with steep hills, but they grade them from time to time and even haul in gravel for the bad spots. At times, there are spots with two feet of water on the trail. I'm 65 years old now and probably have slowed down a little. That's why I think a 230cc thumper would be a good match. And yes, I would of course check my mileage before I venture too far out into no man's land. Your video was a big help to figure out if this CRF230F is even a viable choice. I bought a Torture Test Magazine T-shirt! I can always use another good shirt, thanks.

Mine consumed oil from brand new. I had broken it in easy in accordance with the manual. First top end rebuild I did the same thing, and it consumed less oil but still did. The rest of the builds I broke it in hard and didn't have much consumption. This one I broke in crazy stupid hard with only a very light hone on the cylinder, and got oil consumption lower than I've seen before on this bike. So I don't know if they are known to consume oil, but I know that breaking it in mad stupid hard with a light hone results in very low consumption 😉

I just don't know if the reliability, durability issues are worth it on a newer 4 stroke. The XR is obviously and shockingly irreplaceable by "modern technology". If I was going to buy a smaller new bike for some street and non racing off-road, I'd probably have to go with something like the Yamaha XT. I'd rather deal with trying to fix the soft, bottoming suspension issues off-road than trying to constantly stay on top of the entire maintenance of these small, cheapy "new tech" bikes. I'll just look for a well taken care of XR 250, do some one time mods and actually ride it!
