CRF250L Off Road / Enduro Test Ride Crash

The goal of this trip to Brown Mountain OHV was to test the stock suspension on the CRF250L. However, I quickly found that the real initial limitation to this bike off road is the stock tires.
Regardless of how bad the tires were, I still bottomed out the stock suspension about a dozen times. It is way too soft for this type riding and I wasn't even romping it very hard. To be clear, the stock tires work very well on the road and would probably do well on dirt roads and green lanes. The rougher it gets and the faster you ride, the worse they get.
Race Tech and new tires coming soon.

I put the Ohlins shock on mine, did the Racetech spring kit up front, geared it 13/42, and added Motoz Enduro I/T tires. Night and day. Check Pro Pilot suspension in NJ, they will customize the Ohlins for your size, terrain and riding style and ship her out. Less than $700 for a remote reservoir shock with full adjustment. The Motoz tires are barely DOT and kind of scary on pavement but beast mode on dirt. A less aggressive set, and not scary on pavement, from looking at the terrain in your vid would be some MT-21s. I also unhooked my EJK. It didn't do anything useful for me on the rocky trails except burn more gas. I had the Acerbis tank but went back to stock to slim up the profile of the bike and drop weight. Speaking of which, the bottom line for me is this is a great dual sport, an average dirt bike, a good trail bike. It's just heavier than it needs to be but it has its good points. I've had it up and down the mountains here in PA where about every trail is a rock garden and with the suspension update it was great. The low seat height is nice on the tricky sections. Only downside is the weight if you start to tip or it gets squirrelly on severe off camber sections. But all in all real fun. Oh I also added an under bar Scott's Damper using an unofficial kit you can get from Eric from Scotts, but you'll need to use Rox 2in risers to do it and bars with a bend no higher than about 3.65" With HD tubes I run at 12 psi off-road without a rim lock. The bike doesn't really have enough juice to spin a tire on the rim in my experience. Maybe if it was geared even lower that might be an issue. Other mods were Fastway Evo III foot pegs in the low boy position. I have 34" inseam. They helped comfort but increase control quite a bit in letting you have a stable base for throwing your body position around. I got a seat concepts seat that is very comfy but I think I'm going to ditch it for the Spiral Tall option. It's better than the butt torture device stock one but keeps a slim profile to make moving on the bike easy. On Amazon there is a supplier that sells a set of folding levers for the CRF250L about $25. I got those. Three finger levers and have held up. I cut the tip off the stock brake pedal and installed an Outlaw Racing folding tip. $20 on Amazon. I also replaced the stock shifter with an OEM CRF150R folding tip shifter. I got that because it's steel versus the aftermarket aluminum ones. Hit me up if you want to chat about any of this stuff. I did a lot of trial and error.

LostInPA Fantastic info! I'm working on my setup now. 13/42, MT43 rear (I've got a spare I need to use so I'm going to try it), MT21 front, race tech fork springs and gold valves and gs-3 rear shock. I've got it all in the shop ready to install except the rear shock, it's on the way. I'll do another vid on the same trail with all these changes when it gets warmer. I'm going to run rimlocks mainly because I run the MT43 @ 8 PSI or less. I may be in touch if I want to bounce some ideas!

All my 9 years of riding dirt bikes, mostly 150crf 2013, 230crf 2019, YZ250 2016, 250LX 2020, I've never crashed my newer bikes that I got but even IF I crashed my 150crf I would never crash like this BOI made me laugh everytime i see this video. Never change your engine or muffler if it's not stock, if so just switch the S3 PO and move the PSI to 24 IO

Nice video! I totally agree, the stock tires on the CRF250L are total garbage. I have a set of Kenda K270's at home waiting to get put on mine... I just have to stop being lazy and actually do it :)

Each Adventure Absolutely, you will enjoy the new rubber off-road. If you get a chance, watch the most recent video I posted. You will notice I'm not whining and crying about the tires in that one lol. I'm running an MT21 up front and an MT43 trials in the rear during that video. Night and day difference over the half worn stockers.

Please read the video description. After further testing this bike off road, IMO the most beneficial mods to this bike for this type of riding are (in order of importance): * Tires * Gearing * Suspension * Exhaust/EJK/Airbox

You might also consider rim locks so you can air down. It makes a huge difference.

I've got a motion pro lite lock? I believe for the front and rear. Have you ever heard of doubling up with rim locks to assist with balancing? I've only ever used one on dirt bikes but balancing is a little more important for this bike.

To be clear, I don't have them installed yet but will put them on with new tires.

I have heard of running two rim locks but do not personally run two. I also run motion pro lite locks and I did have to balance my wheels (I used silver solder to wrap the spokes). Pro's of running two rim locks, 1. It does help with wheel balance 2. It provides an extra layer of safety if you are running on the street or highway and get a flat, your tire will stay mounted on the rim. The Con's are extra effort or difficulty when changing tires and perhaps the extra spinning weight in the wheels can have some control or performance impact or even contribute too or magnify speed wobble.

do you think your dad will ride again? or is he done for now
@SoftwareDevJason
@SoftwareDevJason 7 лет назад
Yeah he will definitely ride again, but not for at least 3 months. We probably will avoid this place until he has some more seat time.

Mr. Crowley I've just been working on a bunch of mods to help this bike off-road (suspension, tires, etc). Will further review those things in the future.

The stock tyres are not the best. However they are not that bad either, your crash was unavoidable no matter what tyres you were running.
@SoftwareDevJason

Yeah, they are ok for a DOT dual sport 70/30 tire. They were great for me on the highway and dirt/gravel roads. Obviously you can take them wherever like I did in this video but there are MUCH better options. The MT21 & MT43 combo I'm running right now is heaps better than the stock tires off-road. I'm not really fair to these tires, 95% of my experience off-road has been on a dirt bike with real dirt knobbies. Compared to a pure dirt (off-road only) tire, these are worse than any of them I've ever tried.
